MS buys the Xbone.com domain name

You didn't read the rules?

No "One"
No "X_"

Reminds me of that thing Adobe made about not using photoshop as a verb.

They should have run with it.

They could have had ads where people said they were getting Xboned or had an Xboner or crap like that.

"There are over 200 bones in the human body, every one working in perfect harmony. But despite millions of years of evolution, one bone was always missing....until now. Some say it's purpose is unclear, others say it's not essential. You decide!"

"Are you ready to evolve?"

Major Nelson is right. That's exactly why I called it the Xbone. It was extemely bad for my favorite hobby at one point. Now the name has stuck. If I liked it, I'd probably do what they intended for us all to do and call it the One.

If someone can find one example of it being abbreviated to X1 ever I'll be shocked. The closest thing I've seen to a shorthand is maybe XBX, but it's almost always referred to as the original Xbox, first Xbox, OG Xbox, or just "Xbox" like the 360. And there's been no confusion up to this point.

I get not liking the console, company, or name, but "Xbone" is childishly immature on the level of "Ass Creed"

someone else broke down why some people call it the Xbone.

I don't pledge allegiances to a corporation that doesn't give a shit whether I'm alive or not. I have better things to do.

If they cared so much about what people called it, maybe they should have came up with a better name. 8 freaking years and the best they could come up with was "one"

Also, some people call it AssCreed because Animal Crossing and Armored Core also abbreviate to AC, but hey, go ahead and assume there's a negative reasoning behind it.

Hey <Company>, if you don't like your product being called something 'disrespectful', don't name is something stupid in the first place.

It's like when my wife and I were thinking of names for our children. The first stage was to put the names together with our last name, and think of every possible playground variation of them, to rule out a lifetime of obvious nicknames. Basic stuff.

It could just be me then, it always sounded weird when I said it. I still like it overall though.

Everyone knows that the correct nomeclature when spoken aloud is simply "the bone."

Heh.

NeoGAF got a mention on a frontpage MSNBC site. We're reaching mainstream. Time to bail out.

Shit, we've weathered CNN, Yahoo News and a print interview in the Wall Street Journal. This is amateur hour.

haha this is going to upset those few posters I've seen over the past few weeks who kept saying "if you use the term Xbone it obviously shows where your allegiance is, Sony fanboy."
And you of all people should know that, being the biggest Sony fanboy on this site and all.

I despise the name and refuse to use it too.

I prefer XBO or XB1.

"xbone" and it's usage reminds me of the "extreme" guys from Harold and Kumar. They are so sure they are being funny, but are really just oblivious.

Not gonna lie. That got me pumped.

Sorry but why does this make it official? They probably buy every domain of a popular nomenclature to ensure their message is succinct and dummies on the Internet don't think that XBONE.com is official. Large corporations eat up thousands of domains a year to protect their message.

The funniest thing about Xbone isn't that MS were monumentally stupid to not see it being used, but how much it gets under some people's skins.

It's just a name, dude. Like Cube for the GC, or PSX for the Playstation. I didn't like Wiimote as a term to being with, but it just became the defacto name (and again, should have been obvious to Nintendo that the name would be used).

I honestly feel there is no better time than now to say - "persecution complex".
I don't know what you think are going on people's head when they use the nickname.

I also don't get how "bone" is some how derogatory, other than in some group's made up fantasy and statistics about how Gaffers are using the term.

It's not really that bad, "Hey I want to get an Xbone!" even sounds better than "Hey I want a One!" more people would think Xbox with Xbone.

Yeah at first on here it was kind of a joke, also because it was funny with that dog video they were showing off as next gen tech, but I don't think it's such a negative now.

That they are being witty and clever.

They are not.

"Persecution complex?" I just think the humor is dull and obvious. I actually do not care about the XBO as a system or Microsoft as a company. The usage of "xbone" in itself is just lame.

Why does everyone have to be a fan boy to have a stance or an opinion on something gaming related on these forums?

I call it XBone because it rolls off the tongue better than Xbox One, The One or X1. Brand loyalty has fuck all to do with it. No one would have a fucking clue if I called it "the one" either.

XBone is instantly catchy, memorable and recognisable. It doesn't take a brain surgeon to work out why it's caught on, and I'm absolutely astounded that even with their millions of dollars put into marketing, Microsoft never once realised what would happen.

I never thought xbone was derogatory, when I type it, I'm thinking XBOX One, the real name, not X-Bone. It's the laziest way to type the console name. No lifting fingers or hands off the keyboard.

Exactly - and it's the same when saying it too. And like I said before, I've been in stores where I've referred to it as XBone, and the employees knew instantly what I was talking about.

If that doesn't show that it's caught on in a massive, massive way then I don't know what does.

I would never had thought to call it 'The One', as that term to me is already taken by The Matrix, and the old 16-bit gaming mag.

At least Xbone is a unique moniker. The really stupid thing about Xbox One as a name is the original console has been called a variation of that ever since the 360 launched.

In my opinion, "One" as a moniker is quite possibly the laziest, most used and quite frankly the most generic boring choice they could have made. For example:

The issue is, "XBOX ONE" is a poor name. "ONE" by itself has absolutely no identity, and even if it did, it's shared by countless other things.

I like the name Xbone, it's fun to say.

I also only use Xbone when the console has done something I like (not that often to start with). I use the full name when I am moe unhappy with it.

That would be awesome.

Lame? Using a widely accepted nickname for an object is lame? And it means you think you are being witty? Sure.

It is and always will be Xbone.

Hillarity will ensue when they release the smaller version in due time, i.e. "It's not the size that matters" jokes, etc.

Wouldn't ever think of that one.

Oh no.

You don't like the humor.

Poor you.

The reason it gets used my man, is because it is..... Shhh, dont tell anyone.

Obvious.

Everyone against Xbone seems to think it's negative, or that everyone who uses it feels negatively about the console. Breathe easy, my friends.

Most people in the US simply use it because it's kind of a fun name. I'm not trying to liken your favorite corporation's newest gizmo to my erect genitalia. I'm not trying to say it was a bone-headed move. I'm just trying to say it's a fun name that fits.

Someone mentioned Wiimote. So easy, so elegant, it should've been seen beforehand and adopted, or changed.

EDIT: One thing I absolutely do NOT think when I say Xbone, is that I'm being funny, or clever. I think I'm using the name of a console.
