EDGE: "Power struggle: the real differences between PS4 and Xbox One performance"

The PS3 was supposedly the more powerful console. But the only games that showed me that were Uncharted 3 and God Of War 3. I am not biased either way, but I am sick of the Power argument, and just want great games.

It was the more powerful console, it was also much harder to develop for to get that power out. This meant that multiplatform developers didn't have time to get the most out of the system hence the weaker multiplts and stronger exclusives.

The PS4 on the other hand is significantly more powerful, had the same CPU and GPU architecture as the Xbone, while also being the easier machine to develop for given its straightforward memory architecture. This time around developers won't have to spend any extra time to get performance out of the PS4 as they had to do for the PS3.

Oh and it's also $100 cheaper to boot.

Based on this and other articles, it seems clear to me that the PS4 will have better graphics than Xbox One going into the next generation. And that’s fine.

But it also seems clear that Xbox One will have better everything else than PS4. Specifically, better audio, better multiplayer, better gameplay, and an all-around better gaming experience.

It will have better audio thanks to a dedicated APU (audio processing unit), better multiplayer and gameplay thanks to cloud-based AI, and an all-around better gaming experience thanks to the software architecture and Kinect.

Sony can have the “better graphics” bragging rights. I’m fine with having a better experience all-around, even if it means slightly inferior graphics.
lolololololololololol I LOVE reading blind statements like this! The consoles aren't even out and they read like the two have been on shelves for like 6-12 months already.

All these articles about PS4 being much more powerful, but then I look at the UE4 shot that was supposedly running on PS4 dev kits and can't help but imagine the XBone is able to run something just like this, if not better. Considering how ubiquitous UE3 was, it stands to reason that UE4 will be just as popular among developers this generation.

How is it going to run it better with weaker hardware and being somewhat harder to develop for than PS4? Are we back to assuming there's some kind of magic tome hidden in the XB1 that reveals the secrets of the universe?

Your changing the debate from total consoles sold to "Market excitement" , it doesnt change my original statement that the most powerful consoles have never sold the best. That does not mean ps4 won't sell the most , i expect it probably will but not for the fact that it is the most powerful system.

PS4 and Xbone are releasing A YEAR LATE after WiiU, it's hardly relevant though. People buy consoles to play the games that are available on them, are you actually claiming otherwise?

Wii was the ultimate example of the power of key games rather than the power of the console itself.

I think the history of games shows their is no one smoking gun to console success. Dreamcast had games and was first to market but went bankrupt. Wii was third to market and least powerful and won.

I think there are billet points that make success more likely but no one magic bullet and no combination can guarantee it either.

Eh. I always knew I'd get both eventually. Still getting xb1 first due it's launch games and all in one strategy (makes a huge difference to me).

Don't underestimate the power of the DirectX!

Guys I'm curious. How many actual developers do we have here (in this thread) that are commenting on these power differences? I mean like actual videogame development experience (not fucking pong level coding lol), hands on.

I don't know about that. Off the top of my head I can't think of a single UE4 game. EA seems to be using Frostbite for everything, Ubisoft has their own engines, Capcom has Phanta Rhei(or whatever it's spelled), Konami used the MGS5 engine on the latest PES game, etc. Seems publishers are investing in their own stuff.

EmptySpace holds the secrets of the universe, not xbone. most energy in the universe reside in EmptySpace, it is called dark energy.

Juniour, you can't be serious.

That wasn't a case of the 360 getting the superior ports due to the hardware on the PS3 being inferior, and thus the PS3 limiting the multplatform games on the 360, that was more to do with the horrible PS3 architecture. But I agree that it was evidence of devs not giving a damn about parity politics.
Look at something like Red Dead Redemption - it looked better than Alan Wake (360-exclusive 3rd person shooter that came out on the same day) and it looked better than Infamous 2 (PS3 exclusive open world third person game), so Rockstar definitely tried to push both machines but the PS3 just couldn't keep up. By then the Cell architecture had been already researched and demystified by devs.

Aren't those Unreal Engine pics like 6 months old? Sure they can get much more out of ps4 hardware by now with better drivers and all.

So there's an 40%+ power gap in almost every spec category but the difference won't be obvious on day 1?

Sure it is. It's also a good excuse to keep talking about some mystical potential power when the consoles launch rather than what is right there in plain sight.

Goddamn catching up in this thread is impossible.

Anyway, I'll just redirect to my recent post since it covers the basic idea. Main point: there's plenty more to game development than raw power, especially when it comes to multiplatform titles with tight deadlines on unfamiliar hardware. Calling it "excuses" is sticking your head in the sand.

Hell, I swear I've been over this with you specifically in another thread, TechnicPuppet.

Wow, seems to be pretty unanimous the PS4 is the more powerful piece of kit, and by quite some margin. When you also factor in the price difference, much improved UI & online, Sony's first party studios and PS Plus, it's quite a compelling argument in the consoles favour.

How could it possible run better on a much weaker GPU and lower memory bandwidth?

How is it going to run it better with weaker hardware and being somewhat harder to develop for than PS4? Are we back to assuming there's some kind of magic tome hidden in the XB1 that reveals the secrets of the universe?

Because the shot of the engine on PS4 is so horrible and gross that I have a hard time believing XBO won't be able to at least match that. Maybe they'll optimize it in the future, but if the XBO can't at least match that screenshot then it's beyond bad.

Well, if the next Rocksteady game and the next Irrational game does not use UE, then I'll agree with you.

How cute. It's almost like you're the same person.

So the power gap that we've been talking about for half of a year is looking to be real. Whoa. My brain and skull fragments are sliding off the floor and wall, restructuring at the top of my neck and working upwards until I have a fully formed head. Or whatever the opposite of *mimdblown* is.

I need to go and see what the fantasy land blog is saying about this! They couldn't possibly try to spin this one.

Better gameplay? Explain that one there buddy? The cloud? I'm still curious how that is even going to work if always online isn't forced.

Does the game just switch to very easy mode if you aren't connected online?

We're already seeing examples of the better gameplay I'm talking about. CoD Ghosts dedicated servers on Xbox One, Forza 5 Drivatar system and rumored 24-player online multiplayer, Titanfall cloud-powered AI. PS4 doesn't have anything like those.

I think those who are looking to base the entirety of their opinion regarding the two consoles power difference based on launch titles are doing so only because it benefits one particular narrative, that is, to make the Xbox One appear closer in power comparative to the PS4. I think those with some common sense realise launch games are a very poor barometer to judge either consoles power, especially with multi platform games which will have had even less time and familiarity with the consoles than the first party stuff (as is already pretty clear to see).

Just to remind you guys about what launch vs later cycle was like on other consoles...

What are the games in these images? I'd just like to make a permanent comparison image (with timeline included) for people who think the immediate jump from PS2-PS3 was significantly bigger than PS3-PS4.

What does that even mean ?
Also even if UE4 get's popular it won't matter to PS4 unlike PS3 .
PS4 has the more powerful hardware and it easier to code for .
PS3 to 360 tech or how things work back then means nothing to PS4 and X1 .

EDIT plus those pics so damn old lol .

“It would be totally fine for us to make one version prettier without any political difficulties but it usually doesn't make financial sense,” they said

This is the thing in the article that most worries me. I'm going to buy a PS4 eventually partly due to Sony's exclusives, but also because it is the more powerful version and I am expecting better multiplat performance on it. If developers are going to release identical games on both systems then what's the point?

Yeah. I feel like unreal engines success last gen was the product of a lot of developers unprepared for the shift in development for HD consoles and as a response of desperation a lot of them turned to Epic, a company that had actually done the legwork for them, which allowed them to speed up the process and buy time to get their own house in order.

Nowhere of those companies and publishers have their own array of in house engines that they don't have to pay a license for and are likely close to or even above the level of unreal 4.

Man, as long as Sony gets the online stuff right out of the gate this time around, it's going to be a bloodbath.

If they screw up the online again tho with slow downloads and an online infrastructure that isn't at least on par with EOL 360, they could still screw it up. We won't know either way until launch, it's definitely going to be a stressful ass November this year when it comes to gaming.

Based on nothing but illogical, opinionated, biased grade-a bullshit. Does that bullshit come in honey flavor?

It will have better audio thanks to a dedicated APU (audio processing unit), better multiplayer and gameplay thanks to cloud-based AI, and an all-around better gaming experience thanks to the software architecture and Kinect.

Yeah, I suppose using computers in a server farm to free up (low-end) AI logic from the host hardware is something only Microsoft can do. Guess IBM's never done it, except they have for decades. Guess Google isn't doing it, except they are. Guess Apple can't do it, except they have been. Nope, server tech is patented to Microsoft :rollseyes

And...."software architecture"? You're just jesting at this point, surely...

Sony can have the “better graphics” bragging rights. I’m fine with having a better experience all-around, even if it means slightly inferior graphics.

Your "experience" has and always will come down to the games you're playing. You doing this fanboy console trip is doing yourself zero favors and shows how badly you've been damaged by that thinking. If you came out and said XBO is going to be better b/c it has more of the games you want, okay. At least that's an opinion that can be respected. Trying to turn biased opinions into outright facts however is shameless.

Learn from this.

<Sigh>...

Just cause I'm a nice guy, and I give people a chance, can you please elaborate by what you mean by better everything else.

PS4 has pretty much the same online features from sharing, mic included, phone app, multitasking

PS4 is cheaper as well as PSN+ being cheaper than Gold

PS4 also has audio hardware

PS4 has Instant Game Collection where you get free games

So again please explain how XB1 has better online, better gameplay and better everything else excluding power as I am interested how you came to that conclusion.

You have but I don't agree. If the situation changes after a year and the PS4 pulls further away then I will be able to see that as well.

I will use shipped games to judge rather than specs.

Juniour, you can't be serious.

Oh, but he is.

PS4 is more of the same, with better graphics. Xbox One will provide lots of great new gameplay that PS4 can't replicate (largely thanks to bundled Kinect).

In my opinion, if you can't see any justification for Xbox One's higher price, it's because you don't want to see it. I think Microsoft has done a good job justifying Xbox One's higher pricetag.

I see PS4 as little more than a PS3 with better graphics and new social features. There's nothing wrong with that, but it doesn't excite me.

Sources - Not one of them named.

If we're going to lambaste Albert for coming in here with cooked numbers we should at least hold Edge up to the same standard. 50% more powerful than the Xbox One? Says who? I need more than "source" or "developer".

We're talking about multipat games here, so if UE4 game looks bad in PS4 then It definitely will look worse in Xbox one.

Screw this political shit, make PS4 the lead console for development. I don't want Microsoft holding my games back!

Eh, you put in "console" there as some sort of insurance didn't you.. "Lead console" makes no sense, much because console exclusive multiplatform games doesn't make any sense. Seriously it would be the best for everyone that the most powerful system is "the lead platform".
