Fighting Games Weekly | Sept 16-22 | EVO does a 360 and walks away

-Only c.mk into fireball when it was safe
-backdashing after some offense to react to infiltrations actions
-throwing out less buttons and DPs
-learning to block the vortex
-etc.

He just made a ton of small but meaningful tweaks to his gameplay to counter not only akuma but infiltration's playstyle.

I understand what he did, but remember how in the topanga interview he said we'd see stuff never seen before? From EH "Daigo also noted that there's still unexplored territory in the Akuma match up."

Maybe I was reading too in to it, but it seemed like he had found something out about the matchup as a whole. Everything he did outside of the trade dp/divekick to ultra, was stuff he was already doing. This time it was just refined to a science.

Just realized I gave Koogy a shoutout without shouting out the other awesome Art of Fighting contributors:

S-Kill hooked it up with animation cels and line drawing from the SF Animated Movie!
1262847_10201356309681972_1367005212_o.jpg

Combofiend with hella Capcom swag, games, and fightpads!

Sega with Sega Cup shirts, VF5 arcade cards, VF5 launch shirts signed by Fuudo and Chibita, and super rare EVO 2012 VF5 stick!

All this plus help from our local game shop, Gamers Anonymous, food from local business, chairs from all over, setups from the community, and everyone posting/tweeting/facebooking! Plus iam8bit giving us some super sweet pieces to hang with the local art in the gallery. FGC and just regular gaming communities are coming through big time on this!

I'll do my best to keep everyone here updated, unless you're sick of me. Not sure if I should make a thread the day of/day before or not...promoting your own stuff seems to be verboten on GAF.

For now, I guess I'll leave you with one of our art piece (in progress) from GAF's own The Take Out Bandit!

is there anyway I can catch the match between diago and infil? I missed it :(

Someone posted the VOD to the restream.

That wasn't Infiltration, he's sandbagging. The real infiltration will appear at the Capcom Cup qualifier.

Here's the VOD from a twitch.tv restream w/ ENG commentary by Zhi and Mike Ross: http://www.twitch.tv/kevinsparkz/b/463638112

Daigo vs Infiltration is at 2:22:00
Ryu has a 3 frame dp and tatsu -> sweep doesn't work on him. It's not about the vortex being gimmicks, a large portion of the setups don't work.
All of Gen and Akuma's vortex setup bypass DPs by either beating it (hitting on the other side) or making the DP whiff due to collision box failure, that's why vortexes are so effective. Daigo just manage to block 90% of them.

If he really did find something specific like that then i could see him holding it back as he was easily winning anyway.

He grounded Akuma. Once he showed Infiltration that if he screwed up a non-Vortex jump-in that he might eat an Ultra, Infiltration backed off and Daigo was in much more advantageous territory.

i must be an idiot then, because I can't find it. it's all good, just seeing the match is better then nothing.

edit:
yes, I am a total idiot.

edit2:

am I hearing this shit correctly? Zhi: " burning infiltration down like a church in the south? "

how is this not the most racist thing someone can say? Why the fuck does Zhi get free passes when it comes to this shit. Fucking hate him. He tried so hard to be cool or to be like Yipes when he's on the mic but it's always terrible.

So wait, the drama between Infiltration and Laugh was real?
I thought they were just salty at Evo because they had to play each other, are they not cool anymore? Do we know why? That makes me sad, I remember them always being together at tournaments, back when no one even took them seriously. :(

I vaguely recall Laugh's sister being brought up in this discussion at some point.

He's not racist, but he tries way too hard and comes off as a fun/creep/racist/etc guy. He doesn't know when to stop, I don't like when a commentator tries to get the spotlight. MarkMan should tell him to think a little more before saying something.

Ha, the church burning is what pushed you over the edge? Not the "it's legal to abort babies with Down Syndrome" comment or Hitler references, eh?

Hey, remember Jago? RIP.

Please don't say this stuff if it's not real, Jago is a well known (former) fighting game player who has had health problems in the past.

I thought it had to do with Infiltration being leaving Western Wolves and then as a consequence Laugh being cut from the team.

Yeah Zhi sometimes makes some really creepy or quite frankly offensive remarks sometimes but his technical commentary is usually solid.

It's just that his analogies are so off the wall that you can't just help but laugh at times.

Iirc something about Infiltration wanting to leave Western Wolves and Laugh wanting to stay, but they wouldn't let him stay alone (he was a package deal with Infiltration).

When Zhi comments the match while from time to time make some "out of nowhere" references, it's great, but today he made references while from time to time did some commentary...and that Zhi sucks, and someone should tell him to go easy on the jokes

also, zhi is funny but you just get the feeling he's gonna be the subject of a Kotaku article or Neogaf thread one day

yeah but it would be like calling out the Tim and Eric Show

his whole schtick is weirdness, and he's not exactly an important figure

cr.MK into EX Fireball FADC into Ultra or other way of getting bigger damage off of his signature cr.MK into Fireball

Before I address what I quoted you on, I just have to say that this is the first time in sf4 (over it's 5 years out) that's i've seen anyone consistently whifff punish akuma's sweep w/ cr. mk xx ex fb fadc ultra

What was going on was that daigo was throwing fireballs at a range where akuma couldn't focus, and while maintaining that spacing daigo anti aired all of infil's nonsense. Once infil couldn't feel like he could jump in anymore, he started trying to play closer and force the focus, which is where daigo was tagging him with ex fb's. Daigo kept eliminating options. It got to the point where infil had to play a strict footsie/fireball game on the ground, and what he would do when he was getting frustrated because he was losing, was attempt to just walk up and sweep (a lot of akumas do this at it leads to vortex and is pretty damn safe/hard to punish). Well in the same way that you can tell that your opponent is tired of playing footsies with you and decides to resort to just jumping in, daigo made the same read on infil using the walk up sweep as his frustration option. He'd space it perfectly for the sweep to whiff when he made the read, and then note, had to WALK UP then do a cr. mk xx ex.fb fadc ultra to whiff punish, so it was all a very calculate gamed plan, that doesn't just simply happen, the timing window and room for error is too tiny and he did it too consistently. He must have been really in infil's head to force those whiffed sweeps so consistently.

Very impressive on daigo's part, and great gameplan adjustment.

Maybe people don't like sagat mirrors as much as I do, but anyway, you guys should watch the Bonchan vs Ryan Hart. Clutch match.
