Fighting Games Weekly | Sept 16-22 | EVO does a 360 and walks away

Gotta love those sick ultra coming out of fucking nowhere. It seems like there's only him who can pull off those psychic ultra and make it work to close out the round. Insane stuff...

Id just jumped out of my chair on that grab stun.

I almost yelled like 4 times during that set b/c of haitani. I had to stop myself b/c its 3:30am and my roommate is sleeping.

god damn haitani

So good

I think I just witnessed the greatest SSF4 tournament ever. That final set was amazing. Haitani was down 4-2 to Juso and came back from the brink and then was down 4-3 against Mago and came back from the brink. Absolutely amazing. Makoto finally wins a tournament and does it in dramatic fashion. Haitani just proved why he is considered to be in a class with Daigo and Sako.

Japan showing how things get done. I hope this is a wake up call to those who think the US is anywhere near Japan in skill level because overall it's much lesser the top players can keep up but the layman is much weaker. Without a strong pool you can't level up.

SC2 shows the brillaintly. EU does better than NA due to having a better player pool and some societal things that help out. The FGC is no different. Japan has the good transportation system and compactness that everybody has a good pool of players and a better mind set for learning.

Late response, but

Once you're in loser's bracket, you have to play twice as many matches to reach the grand final as someone in the winner's bracket. It's hardly a "reward," and everybody is always playing by the same elimination rule throughout: you're out once you've lost twice.

I meant in comparison to other tournament formats. I'd consider a second chance a reward compared to nothing.

After reading everyone's responses, double elim is slightly better than single elim, but not by much.

I dunno. On one hand, it would be awesome to see round robin implemented. It lessens the chances of being "randomed" out by bad matchups. On the other hand, it takes more effort and more time. I can guarantee Top 8s at EVO would be a lot different if there was a change in tournament format. It would better reflect the level of skill.

Funny thing is that Haitani started 0-2 against Juso and Mago. Had he done that against anybody else, he would have been out of the tournament. And that's the beauty of a longer set, to show how players can recompose themselves and adjust under pressure.

I don't know what Capcom's plans are for the Capcom Cup, but they better get that 2/3 nonsense out of there if it's only 8 players each for 3 games unlike last year where it was 16 players each for 4 games. They can afford to have longer sets and the players as well as viewers deserve it. At least 3/5, hell maybe even 4/7.

Oh wait, SFxT is in this. That can stay 2/3

Round robin has one major flaw other than the time required: Once it gets to the point where a player knows he's out of the running, the incentive for him to compete isn't there anymore. So you'd have instances where these players would pretty much just give up and essentially give their later opponents easier matches and possibly "unearned" wins. Round robin is one of those things that is sound in theory but has some pretty serious issues in practice.

With a double elimination format, there is always an incentive to play as long as you're still in the bracket, no matter where you are in the bracket, because as long as you're still in the tournament it's possible for you to still win.
