How can Microsoft win back your heart for XB1?

Lock in some sick Japenese exclusives like they did for 360 with Lost Odessy and Blue Dragon and on Xbox 1 when they got Gunvalkyrie, Panzer Dragon Orta, and Shenmue 2

as the others here have said - the ship sailed some time after E3

if they lower the price to more and there end up being quite a few good exclusives on the XB1 I might borrow/buy one but other than that it's really dead to me

I care about hardware design, build and game video quality

I was always going to get one eventually (Even with the always online). I'm the type of person who buys pretty much every console, but the time has past for them to win me over enough to get one at launch. If they get some exclusives that I'm super interested in, I may pick one up in within the next year (not looking likely at this point). Barring that, I will wait for a sizable price drop.

MS original plan:

1- Partner with EA+Activision and the rest of big publishers to create a console that kills the used game market by imposing one of the craziest DRM ever seen ( The core function of the console cannot be used unless you check-in with MS servers). The idea was to maximize revenues and prevent any possible money leakage.( evidence: EA online passes cancellation prior to X1 reveal)

2- in order to be part of this system you need to be big ( no indies ). lack of indie program until recently.

3- MS planned to unleash this plan with X1 in 2014.

What happend?

1- Sony surprised the world and especially MS by Feb 13 announcement.

2- MS entered "Panic Mode" to respond. system social features are reactionary to Sony's "Share button". up until now MS was going to proceed as planned originally.

3- Adam Oarth fiasco was the first spark of the problem and yet MS saught that they continue with their DRM plans.( fuck'em their just a bunch of angry kids!)

4- MS revealed the X1 in May, gamers reacted negatively to the absence of game showings.

6- E3 MS showed the games and also confirmed their DRM policies.

7- Sony E3 was a huge success due to supporting used games and perfect pricing.

8- X1/PS4 are up for pre-orders in various retails.

9- MS noticed that they way behind in pre-order numbers and decided to do the famous 180 on the DRM. ( it's about money in the end )

10- MS decided to create an indie program following Sony lead in the matter.

11- MS is rushing to release X1 in only 13 countries in 2013 with most features not available at launch.

This is my personal observations of what happened in the last 8 months. I'm still angry at the idea that MS almost destroyed gaming as we know it, and if it wasn't for us gamers, MS would've proceeded with their plan. thanks to them we are paying for online in a Sony console now.

So, I've already set my mind on not supporting this company at all. PS4 is more powerful, will run multiplat better than X1, Sony has 1st party exclusives which trumps MS offereing by being more and varied. I won't be missing much since large portion of X1 exclusives will end up on PC.

MS will never see a dime from me after what they wanted to pull.

I honestly doubt there is anything they can do to make me buy their console again. Hell even this gen I bought the 360 to play Tales of Vesperia and honestly never touched the console after finishing that.

I don't feel like I am part of their main target audience, I don't like their approach to online gaming, I don't like their policies overall (and all this 180 they did with the Xbox One sure didn't help in this aspect), I don't relate to the people they elect to be their representatives (PR), and I don't really like the main series of exclusive games they put out. Besides all that, the price for all the consoles in my country are freaking high as hell, so I really have to make a choice, at least at this point of the gen.

So yeah, maaaaaybe, if they had an exclusive game that really appealed to me I would consider it. I doubt it though, seeing as how they tried to do that with the 360 and failed.

Some RIDICULOUS exclusives is all they could do. At this point nothing they have as an exclusive grabs me so I'll go with the company that didn't try and fuck me then change their mind. At this point I'll get a Wii U before I touch the Xbox One.

Things I'd like but not happening:
Bring back MSP
Bring out the most powerful system at the time of release akin to the original and 360
Take some of the apps out from behind the paywall.
Kill the non-xbox related dashboard ads

Slim to no chance as they already have made their intentions clear :
Let 360 wired arcade sticks work (stated as not being compatible)
Don't let my purchased and banked points expire after converting to real money. ( I thought gift card laws prevented this kind of thing. It's ridiculous they can turn your unexpiring credit you spent real money on into expiring "promotional" credit that vanishes)

Happening:
Fighting game exclusive
Fix the controller d-pad

Other:
Some sort of Rock Band-ish game from Harmonix for Kinect.

So, yeah not really enough at this point, and KI is not worth $500 to me on a less powerful system. I was theirs to keep in their camp, and they lost me.

The thing that burns me up the most is the points expiration thing, as I had a ton of purchased MSP cards I spent real money on already redeemed, and now I have to spend it or lose it. I honestly don't see how they can legally do that, and it's rotten.

Yakuza 5!

Make it happen, Microsoft....please...
I came here to say no to the hey!
The Yakuza 5 plat trophy must rest with Y3,Y4 and Yakuza dead souls!!

Now I have no problem if Sega brings the love to the PS4 and the XBone. Just not the money hat.... Please...not the money hat.

I am already planning on getting both an Xbox One and PS4 anyway but there are a few things that I think would inspire my confidence in the system and make it more appealing (and maybe do the same for others). This gen the 360 has been my main system (I also have a PS3) and part of me hopes they will redeem themselves and compete with Sony.

-Lose the Kinect, drop the price. At this moment I am not thrilled at paying an extra $100 (at least) for the Kinect. It has no appeal to me as far as gaming goes and that won't change unless they release something big that demonstrates it's value to me. Until then I am extremely skeptical that it will enhance my gaming experiences in any way. The voice features, Skype, and auto-profile switching are cool features but are by no means worth the extra money.

-Good games, particularly exclusives. Exclusives are the main thing for me that determines my preferred system. If Microsoft actually releases a good Halo then I will be 100% on board. Also, good, new IPs. Even just one amazing new IP could change the game completely if it is good enough.

-Give people some incentive to buy the system by making Xbox Live subscriptions more attractive. They probably won't lower the price of Live but they could give occasional price breaks on the digital download of a game of your choosing or something like that. Another thing they could do is continually develop new features for Live that make it superior to PSN and PS+.

Let's say for arguments sake the PS4 is indeed 50% more powerful than the XB1 and the PS4 will be the only console capable of consistently delivering a full next-gen experience (1080p @ 30 / 60fps), for those who said they'd reconsider XB1 at $399 (without Kinect), would you really be satisfied with generation 7.5? I would of thought, even for die hard 360 fans. having only slightly better graphics than current gen must be a hard pill to swollow.

To me, reading things like the XB1 can only manage 900p for a certain game, it seems like the XB1 is an almighty cluster fuck and Microsoft is going to have to do all the above ($399 or less, no pay-wall for non-gaming apps (Netflix etc), etc, etc) to have any sort of fighting chance.

Me personally? Nothing short of giving the XB1 for free.

Oh and change the fuck name to Xbox 3 because it's what it is.

A launch date and great exclusives is enough for me. I won't cancel my PS4 preorder but I'll preorder X1 too.

299 no kinect, no mp live fee, no ads on home screen, 2 free games a month with live gold, stream games to surface

Luckily the only thing I'm concerned about is the games and from day one I've been interested in the exclusives from both consoles. I don't care about policies and PR shit. As long as I can afford it and play the games i love. All about fun for me.

You do know why pre orders didn't live up when they announced it right? The Hardcore gamers didn't want this and still don't even the kinect. And it shows everywhere when Sony did show what gamers wanted. Games but a side of that it was not smart in the long run 24 hour check ins,one time to give a game once every 30 days is just to dumb for example. Also the PR has been a disaster even after the 180's. Looking at digital foundry against Xbone i found it laughable how they twist and turn again.
.

A more powerful console? That's it? That's all it takes? I mean let's be honest, there isn't really anything that differentiates the PS4 from the PS3 than simply more powerful hardware. Wonderful! How boring. At least MS was/is trying to do something different. Whether it turns out successful or not is a big if and up to MS/developers to make it happen.... But at least they're rolling some dice, trying some new ideas and tech/improving on ideas that didn't work out so well, instead of maintaining the status quo.

OP you should know by now that thus far in this new console war GAF is almost purely pro sony regardless of what it is, and anti ms regardless of what it is.

THAT being said... I'm still getting both at launch. Both offer games I'm interested in. Great time to be a cross platform gamer (WiiU and PC included!)

I don't know, a new generation is an opportunity for a clean break and MS provided every reason to do it after being an xbox fan for two generations. Kind of hard to reverse all that, but they'll just have to keep at it and release great games that draw me back.

Free game bundled with the system for the US market, dedicated servers for all multiplayer games, make more exclusive titles for the system, lower the price.

They already have, sort of. I definitely do understand the concerns about Microsoft's original vision and the possibility of them returning to it, but if that happens, I will sell my X1 and I will just stop caring. Simple.

I am definitely in the minority here but at E3, I was so hyped for PS4 and did not care at all for the X1. A few months later, I have cancelled my PS4 pre-order and I now have an X1 on pre-order. Why you might ask? Well I am primarily a PC gamer so these consoles were only ever going to get my attention for console exclusive games. My original intention was to get the PS4 and have that as my main console for multi-plat console only(PS4/X1) games and later on pick up an X1 when they sort their shit out.

After the 180 from Microsoft and after the release of the launch line ups, Sony offered nothing for me in terms of exclusive launch titles and the X1 did. I have never had interest in Killlzone and Knack didn't do much for me either. I will admit Drive Club looks very very good but as a big fan of Forza I will have to side with Turn10 on this one. If PS4 had more then just 1 launch game for me then sure I will definitely bite on it and play both. But right now, X1 offers me Forza, Dead Rising 3 and Killer Instict and on top of that FIFA14 for free, a game that I buy each year.

Games such as BF4, COD, Assassin's Creed etc etc I will pick up on PC. If this were not the case, I believe PS4 would be the better choice of the two. But since I am a PC gamer, PS4 only offers me Drive Club which isn't enough to spend ~$650AUD just to have it at launch. I will buy a PS4 early next year when there is a few more exclusives to play such as Infamous and hopefully at least an announcement from Naughty Dog.

As far as indies, again, I have a PC for this.

They never had me. But if they did want my attention, instead of PR-Spinning their console, they should focus on the games. Where my next issue with them lay. They need a lot more variety. XBox (all iterations) are generally dudebro systems to me. I actually bought a 360 to play Lost Odyssey, Tales of Vesperia and Eternal Sonata. Since those games, no exclusive(timed or not) have come out on that system that appealed to me.

Halo, COD, Gears, these are the games I associate with the XBox brand, and quite frankly I think shooters on Consoles are a joke I can only tolerate so much of. As I much prefer the KB+M on PC.

Nintendo, needless to say they have their own unique experience.

Sony, there's stuff from Naughty Dog, Worldwide Studios, etc, that offer a diverse set of experiences. TLoU, Puppeteer, LBP, just to name a few.

One of the few games I'm really looking forward to next gen is Knack.

Just different tastes, might be how I grew up on Nintendo and Sony platforms.

Edit: As for their policies and stuff. I don't mind truthfully, as a long time Steam user. Just stick to something and make it work.

This is so well said and I am in the exact same position, so, agreed on all fronts. ALL FRONTS!

Seriously, great post. Makes it so I don't have to write out a near-identical one.

If after two years there are a ton of exclusive top tier games that I can't play anywhere else I will. If not, then I will easily be able to avoid giving them money.

If they do another 180 and remove the Kinect, that would be the last straw. I would never buy XB1 in that circumstance. Well, certainly not for $399. The Kinect is about the only "uniquely interesting" thing the XB1 has going for it. Get rid of that and you've just got a PS4, except slower. And with better online.

What they need to remove is the Kinect price premium. If Microsoft wants to force everybody to purchase the Kinect, with all benefits currently sight unseen, then they can by-god pick up the tab for it! Or, at least subsidize the shit out of it. As it is now, only Microsoft seems to think the Kinect will be super useful, and yet everybody except Microsoft is being forced to pay for it. It might suck!

Now, I personally believe that the Kinect might be cool. And I certainly believe that it has to be packed into every SKU, or it will be ignored by developers just like the first Kinect was. But since Microsoft has not shown us any evidence of this theoretical future coolness, I'll be damned if I'll plunk down $100+ of my money, just to be part of some grand experiment.

So, again to repeat:

  • XB1 plus Kinect for $499 -- Hell, no. That's too much to pay, even if the Kinect turns out to be sweet.
  • XB1 with no Kinect for $399 -- Still no. You just described a slightly shoddier version of the PS4. I can get an actual PS4 for that.
  • XB1 plus Kinect for $399 -- Okay, now you're starting to appeal to those of us who have some "faith" in the Kinect. Maybe a bit slower than the PS4, but it's got that fairly snazzy camera...
  • XB1 plus Kinect for $349 -- Now you're starting to appeal to the folks that don't even want the Kinect. It's (at worst) a slightly cheapafied PS4 at this point, and if the Kinect does pan out, that's an actual damn good value.
  • XB1 without Kinect for $299. This is the last ditch, "get out of hell" SKU. Rolled out only when all else has failed. This is the "Faster Wii U, except with games" SKU. And at that price, it might even sell to the imaginary demographic that buys consoles to watch TV on.
This too. Right now, the xb1 is just too expensive for what your getting hardware wise. But at the same time, kinect is what's setting it apart from the ps4 and has almost become a part of the actual system similar to the wii u gamepad. They need to lower the price without removing kinect. And they need to do it fast.

Uhh. Variety should be the least of Microsoft's concerns right now. Just look at their launch lineup:

Forza Motorsport 5 - Racer
Dead Rising 3 - Open world action game
Lococycle - Racer/brawler hybrid thing
Killer Instinct - Fighter
Zoo Tycoon - Sim/management game
Ryse - Action/hack & slash
Crimson Dragon - onrails shooter in the vein of Panzer Dragoon

+ the games in the launch window:
Kinect Sports - sports/family game
Project Spark - Creation tool
Max: Curse of Brotherhood - 2D platformer

Titanfall demo at launch please.

Also I never even cared about anything the rest of us are complaining about. I am just happy to be getting an upgrade over the 360. There are always going to be varying opinions about what the best possible Xbox could have been. I think this one we got will suit me just fine.

I have a powerful gaming PC already. I am getting this for the same reason I got a WiiU, to play the exclusive games.

The only way I would seriously consider getting an XB1 at this point was if all of my friends were getting it. As it stands, none of them are. This is coming from a 6-year old 360 owner who's never owned a PS3.

I'm not all that impressed with that xb1 launch lineup. If you don't like racing sims, what else is left? DR3 maybe, but the rest are very underwhelming. I'm not paying $500 for 1 game.

have to strip themselves of this corporate persona they have and go back to the original/early 360 days meaning
- new top dogs or at least PR not taught from a university degree
-have a clear gaming message and social stuff (which they do well) as a bonus
- exclusives that are not just dude bro ( im liking dr3 )

then i shall get one

I'll get one eventually, but probably a couple of years from now. Only game I'm interested in is Killer Instinct, but this whole season bullshit is a bit annoying.

For the record, 360 was my main console, with PS3 a distant second.

Great list! Now where is Microsofts PR for it?
Who knows? They've attended Gamescom, TGS and various MS-hosted events, but I agree with you that they haven't done a good enough job as a whole.

I feel like Double Helix and Team Dakota are doing a great job marketing KI and Project Spark, though.

That's like... your opinion, man. There's plenty of people that are looking forward to Crimson Dragon and KI.

Besides, my point is that Microsoft's lineup for the XBO actually is fairly diverse.

Whether you personally are looking forward to the games or not doesn't really matter. It's just as easy to say that about Wii U's and PS4's lineups.

Just One thing. Don't release a kinectless SKU, the Kinect is the only thing setting the X1 apart hardware wise. Bundling a Kinect with every box gives devs more options.

Also, let me grab my flamesuit first, I was quite happy with the original DRM plans. As the idea of a steam like console, with the big exclusive we can expect from MS/Sony, really appeals to me. The benefits, for me, of both digital and physical in one package.

Get rid of xbox live paywall, or at a bare minimum don't put online multiplayer behind it.

If they do that I wont bother with ps4 and i'll get the xbone.

It's going to be a couple years before the people who followed the DRM debacle will forgive MS and come back to their system. At least that's how I see it. If MS keeps up the good message and doesn't pull anything else shady they'll be okay. Likewise, Sony needs to keep up their messaging and not let anything like the PSN hack happen again.

They never had my heart to begin with. I might pick one up in a few years to play whatever single player exclusives exist by that point, but other than that MS has completely lost me.

Well, it's pretty clear that multi-platform games are going to be superior on the PS4, by all accounts, so those who own both would be crazy to buy them on the Xbox One, which reduces it down to the exclusives. And then it gets scarier.

Top Bottom
