Wii U Firmware Update is live everywhere. Everyone calm down.

Warning to Dragon Quest X playing J-GAF:

Firmware 4.0.0J will fail to boot your Wii U at all (as in the whole system halts with an error code of selecting a user) if you have the Dragon Quest X official 'Nintendo USB Memory' stick attached.

It appears that the firmware now thinks this is a hard drive and has a cataclysmic meltdown/failure. (This used to be fine.)

Simply remove the stick and reboot your console, everything is fine..
Apart from obviously, you can't play the Wii version of Dragon Quest X anymore.

Which is obviously, very sad and bad - way to go Nintendo testing!

Games that have classic controller functionality, there's no reason that the Wii U couldn't be patched so that those games could be played with the gamepad though..

At least that makes sense to me... Xenoblade, The Last Story, etc etc.

A patch could fix the problem, right?

Something annoying:

I was excited at the possibility of playing Wii games without a TV in the car or something. However, when you try to boot directly into your Wii Channel, you are REQUIRED to turn the TV on. It can actually detect whether or not your TV is connected and on.

If one's not, tough luck. Been trying to find a workaround.

A firmware update to Wii U yes but obviously not just a patch to Dragon Quest X.

My main reason for posting is that if you boot the console for the first time after a firmware update and it just dies on an error screen, no input, no ok button, nothing - like me, you might panic :)

Allistar Roo, Thanks for the answers!

I just tested out DKC Returns and Secret of Mana. Both worked great! Really really stoked for this feature!

Having not touched my Wii U since launch, I guess I don't really have any context for any of these amazing, improved load times.

Money has kept me from getting any Wii U games. :X

Anyone else having Internet problems after the update? My Wii U can't seem to stay connected. It was fine before the update, but now my Mii's icon keeps turning orange...

I think someone posted that if you change the TV output setting to non-HDMI it works.

Tried Skyward Sword for a couple mins. Seems lag-free. My battery is almost dead. Going to be hard to play on the GamePad because of that red light turning on so soon. Let me use my Eneloops!

Hm, kinda dumb that GamePad controls don't work on it for Classic Gamepad games.

Very dumb...
Ya, it really should be the only way to play, I'm still a little confused about it. Still, beggars can't be choosers I guess...I finally have a real use for that game pad stand now, pitiful consolation? Lol

Madden 13 seemed to load faster everywhere.

Splash screens before game are DEFINITELY faster.

ZombiU didn't seem any faster, and Lego City doesn't either.

These are all installed btw. Not disk.

My God do I love the new sound options. I am just popping in game after game at this point to hear the music because I was forced to send the audio out of my shitty TV speakers before. Finally.

Oh, sweet!

Maybe I'll finish Last Story now that I can just pull it up nonchalantly next to my desk now.

Love the new 720p screens too.

I heard you can finally get Dolby Pro Logic for Wii games over HDMI... but have they added screen size adjustment to get rid of the underscan in Wii mode?

Wii games communicate directly with the Wiimote & its periphals. Therer is no OS-layer inbetween during gameplay.

EU and Aus eShop can be accessed from my console.
Which traditionally and from Nintendo's point of view is the same region ("PAL").

Doesn't the overscan depend on the Wii game?
So there would have to be a menu, where the scaling can be changed on the fly.
On the other hand, every game should be save at up to 10% zoom.

So this happened while I was sleeping?

Wii games on the gamepad eh? but with wiimote? I'd say that's a freaking good start! :)

What are the verdict on the chances of them implementing gamepad controls for at least some of those games later on? Is it even possible? At least for games with classic control support?
