"LG's new Nexus 5 may launch with a price tag of $299."

? First line in the OP.

LOL. Yeah, I'm a moron. I didn't read the first line of the quoted text thinking it was just a title.

Not sure if I want it. I have never had good experiences with LG phones. I really need an upgrade though I've been holding this Galaxy s3 for quite some time. I'll be interested to see the form factor. I don't think I've ever seen a G2 in person.

I would guess that it would keep the same form factor as the G2, right?

The only thing I don't like about my Nexus 4 is that the analog audio sounds worse than apple hardware. If they got slightly better audio on the Nexus 5 then it's basically the perfect phone.

Rumors say snapdragon 800, 1080p IPS (I think)...not that gimoed.

Numbers don't tell the whole story. It will be 1080p IPS but it can still look worse than an HTC ONE, G2, S4. It will have a snapdragon 800 but still be slower than all of these and a 5s/5c.

Yup on the form factor. This was my first LG phone and no complaints. The hardware top notch. I didn't like how they handled the launch and everything afterwards though.

No SD slot? Going to pick up a Nexus 5 to replace my GSII I think, just need to get on a cheap ass prepaid plan.

How is it that Google is able to price these phones at an affordable price unlocked and the other companies try to bend people over with theirs? Nexus phones are the best value for what you get.
I think they're artificially high as a deal with providers so people get the $0 phone with 3 year plan instead of buying it outright with no plan.
When I went to asia they had alot of these no name high spec phones for cheap.

Battery tiers? I hope that's a mistake because that would literally be the worst thing a phone manufacturer could do and I couldn't support it on principal.

I'd be (pleasantly) surprised if it hit $300 though. I'm expecting it to stay about where it was and maybe even a bit more.

how come?

Storage tiers minus expandable storage are already bad enough but you can kinda swallow them because the devices are cheap and so it's a concession that allows them to have profitable models where the base are about break even. It's tolerable at best and complete bullshit at worst depending on the price.

This would be even further impacting basic functionality for the sake of upsell coupled with a non-removal battery. It's completely disgusting that the phone would be hamstrung by battery life tiers and completely unnecessary. Assuming they could create a successful product it's yet another blueprint others may follow to milk hardware. I already disagree with the current contract system like many others who are interested in the Nexus line of phones but I refuse to exchange one bad practice for another.

The Nexus is currently one of the more interesting products in the phone world because it's not a crazy scam, and if they start stooping to this then they are going backwards.

Moto did it with the MAXX

the same exact phone hardware, same firmware even, but a bigger battery...

How do you know that? You have access to the phone and have done comprehensive benchmarking?

The SoC and screen weren't gimped on the Nexus 4 anyway. They cut costs on the things you wouldn't notice on a spec sheet or in a store demo; audio quality, LTE, actually bothering to build enough to meet demand, etc.

on the other hand, bigger batteries do cost more to make.

Three things;

1 - The new Nexus 7 has one of the best screens on the market. It looks great and comes calibrated straight out of the box. I'd be very surprised (and disappointed..) if the Nexus 5 doesn't match its quality.

2 - The Snapdragon 800 powering the Nexus 5 runs at 2.3ghz according to the leaked manual, which puts it on par with the G2.

3 - It'd be more powerful than the 5c, but less powerful than the 5s. Does anyone honestly care though? The S4 Pro powering my Nexus 4 is more than quick enough for my uses. Performance is great and my phone hardly hitches. I've yet to come across an app that pushes the S4 Pro anywhere close to its limits, so I doubt the Snapdragon 800 will be taxed at all. All this hardware/benchmark dick waving is such a waste of time.

Because there are 'nexus' google versions of the S4 and HTC one that sell for $600+ unsubsidized. The G2 is $600+ unsubsidized. Are you to believe they have some secret sauce where they can sell a phone of the same quality for $300 less. It's just not going to happen.

The camera will definitely be gimped as was the Nexus 4's. The screen will be 1080p but probably won't have the great colors that the HTC One or G2 have. I would think the snapdragon isn't as fast as well. They can throw whatever clock speed they want on it. It means nothing.

I don't really. It's definitely a worthy device. But it's not going to be up to par on all cylinders with a flagship

Can't wait for the launch day problems again from Google. I got my order in for the N4 on launch day but I remember the GAF thread being hilarious with all of us dealing with server issues and Google having massive fulfilment issues. Hopefully they've hired someone with a days worth of logistics experience to handle this launch but I'm guessing that is unlikely.

I'll wait for the N6 or the N7. I just got my N4 replaced because it was under warranty and I figured why the hell not get a fresh one with a new battery. Although I did have some issues with the charger buzzing and battery draining (nothing massive) so I used that as my reason for them to replace it. I just don't feel I need to upgrade every year anymore. I guess I'll see how key lime runs on it but I think I'll be keeping this for another 2 years. Glad Google is sticking to this pricing model.

I might murder something
or just import it
if it doesn't come to Australia. Don't see many Nexus products here apart from my Galaxy. Well not that I've seen...

Wait what? This phone won't have LTE??

I would love a nexus 5 with a bigger battery as the one on my N4 is really poor but I just can't see Google releasing 2 phones with different dimensions.

I'll also miss the glass back but the feel of the new nexus 7 is very nice.

I only saw my first N4 at the weekend and I thought it was a ridiculously well made phone. Looking at the leaked images of the N5 and it doesn't quite look up to par (I buy my phones based more on how well they are designed as opposed to specs, that being said they have to also perfom well).

I'm a bit disappointed regards that, but it's still looking like my next phone!

I own the N4 since launch, and it's far from well-made. The glass back is a pain in the ass, the power button is fragile and the side buttons altogether don't depress enough in my opinion. It's a good looking slab of black glass sure, but I wouldn't call it well made. It's still a great bargain of a phone.

Yea, I had my reservations about th epracitcality of the glass back. The phone I saw was kept in a case since it was bought and in a handbag, so it showed little to no effects of wear and tear, probably why I was so impressed with it. Maybe if I had seen one with more real word use (i.e. stored in a pocket and dropped a few times) my opinion would be more inline with yours!

You're just making an assumption based on the price of the product because you believe a smartphone costs $600+. That's not true, it doesn't have to. You can look at Google's Nexus 4 and 7 to demonstrate you don't need to gimp hardware to be cheaper.

The Nexus 4 has a great screen and so does the 7. I don't understand your Snapdragon 800 logic. It's clocked the same as the G2.

I like how Nexus devices get a lot of hype pre announcement/ release but when people actually have the Phone the impressions are disappointing, especially over time.

Really excited about the Nexus 5. Especially since it is physically smaller then the Nexus 4, which is just a tiny bit too big for my liking.

In general I'm crazy excited for what will go down at the Google event with rumors of them reveal both the Nexus 5 and a watch.

Well HTC One (and Xperia Ultra) have the best screen in the smartphone market so yeah it might be tough competing with that.

But make no mistake this phone will be more powerful than One or S4, this is Snapdragon 800, not 600 as they had (those aren't clockspeeds btw) and it's coming with stock android.
