Vita PSN Game & Service Thread | October 2013 | Ver 2000, Batman and some Angry Birds

It was an expensive store update again this week. Bought Worms, Kung Fu Rabbit, Uncharted card game and Malicious.

Only played the latter so far and buyers remorse is setting in after I failed the first mission miserably.

I started to have a bad feeling about it when the presentation began with a fake language voice over, which I hate (only Gravity Rush pulled it of). It sounds totally cheap but ok, this is just a download game.
There isn't really a tutorial level and I had to learn that the mechanics are a little more varied to just jump in and learning them by playing.
The controls feel a little bit clunky thanks to those mechanics as you can switch between fighting styles on your dpad and when doing it mid-combo there is a bonus. The problem is, you have to move your thumb from the sticks for it. The same goes for the fall button on the touch screen, which should have been put on the backtouch in my opinion.
But the real culprit behind the clunkyness of the controls are the movement and the camera. You don't really run, you float around which I still need to get used to. The camera cannot keep up with this fast movement and the angles aren't always optimal.

Gameplaywise, I still don't really have the hang out of the fighting mechanics. They seem complex so that you can pull of some cool stuff but I only have the standard attacks right now.
The boss didn't seem to telegraph her attack moves clearly to me. Maybe it was because there was too much going on on the screen, but I couldn't make out a clear attack animation so that I can react. Same goes for my blocks, which I couldn't really make out.

I was very impressed with the graphics though which looked nice and clean. Don't know if it is native res, but isn't as blurry as many other Vita games. While playing the Forgotten Library level I didn't experience bad framedrops, everything seemed fine.

I think I need to learn the mechanics more but right now I am not impressed.

Edit: Buy Rymdkapsel (PSM), Spelunky and Divekick.

So I have a general Vita question and didn't want to make a new thread just for that, hoping you guys can help!

I found a Crystal White Vita for a fair enough price that I'm going to "upgrade" from my black, launch Vita. When I do this, can I just put my 32 gig memory card into the new Vita and continue where I left off with everything still on there, or do I have to do a backup & restore from new process to get my games/saves over to the new hardware?

Thanks in advance!

P4G needs a memory card for save data.

Very few games don't need a memory card. From my own collection, the only ones I know of are Touch My Katamari and Muramasa Rebirth. On these games your save data and updates are stored on the game card itself, and the bubble/livearea is entirely stored in the Vita internal memory, and disappears between factory resets until you put the card back in.

Damn, i was hoping I could play the game straight off the cart and upload saves to the cloud. Ah well.

It's pretty simple to play, there are three factions of cards, heroes, mercs and villains, each card has cost, defense, attack and some effects, some cards are "friends"(they got some bonus if together) others are "enemies"(a card deals some malus to another specific card) when you choose a card you can choose one treasure card from three covered cards, treasures are used to "buy" equipments cards that add more attack, defense or other to a card.
After one turn(some exceptions apart a card can't attack immediately) the card can attack the enemy card that has in front or the enemy directly if no card is blocking, who has 0 or less energy loses(sometimes the winning conditions are different).

It's a good little game imo, but i only enjoy card games where i can see my opponent acting like the best player ever at the beginning of the duel and then crying at the end for the humiliating defeat lol(=only yugioh tag force games sadly :( )

Thanks man. It's on sale right now so I might slip it into my cart when I pick up digital versions of DC.

Nope that will work just fine. You will probably need to readjust your system settings back to how you want them though.

you'd have to link that card to your new vita. i would back it up to be safe

Why did GAF went down today? Was because of that iOS FFVI remake that my mind (sadly) knew was going to happen?

A quick question about P4G: Did you use the "Voice" feature or whatever is called? The one that let you know the most popular choices. I thought at first I wouldn't like it, but it gives me a quick way to know what I can do, so it ended being useful. I still make me own choices though.

"Finished" Killzone Mercenary (I say it like that because I haven't done any contracts yet, just the story) in around 4.5 hours. It was a pretty decent game with a lot of promise in its level design but I think I agree with the reviews that had it around a 6/10. It's even jankier and more clumsy than a normal Killzone game and that makes doing some of the other stuff, like stealth, reeeally hard. Once you're spotted they don't ever forget about you either and there's no restart checkpoint option so you have to die (and then re-collect any intel you had just found). The framerate was really rough at times especially the last battle, but thankfully that lock up issue I had went away around mission 3. The graphics were nice for a handheld game but since they were trying to emulate console graphics I was left mostly unimpressed, like I said before it felt like it was stuck somewhere between looking like Killzone 1 and 2.

So while it was a nice effort I can't help but feel like it suffered from the patented "Sony handheld B-team game" effect. Meaning it's impressive for the hardware it was on but it fell short in many areas compared to its console brothers, both in graphics and gameplay. I'm not sure if I'm going to dive into multiplayer or most of the contracts, it'll be tough doing the covert ones with such a busted stealth system.

Did you try equiping armours that make it easier to be undetected? And did you try the ghost VAN-Guard that makes you invinsible for a short amount of time?

And about the intels, you can bypass that by going to the dealer store. The game saves your progress whenever you leave the store, so you don't have to collect those intels again or do certain things again after you die. This works as long as you don't exit the game I'm guessing.

I also completed the story mode today funny enough and I have been far more impressed with the game. It was simply a joy to play. It's like you're given a playground to experiment on with your equipment. You have so many weapons and they all handle distinctively (I still have equipment to buy). I also loved the way the levels were designed, not as linear and you have more options to tackle these contracts. Lastly, the story was pretty good, very very good for a FPS. It was predictable at the beginning but things changed quickly. All characters have been convincing, the dialogue well written and the intels are used smartly to flesh the story out. I thought it was genius how
general Grey orders Benoit to leave you die and then you serve the Helghast after that. And you are on your own near the end not trusting any side.

Killzone 2 is the only one I had the time to complete and so, this is the only accurate comparison I have. They're both very different and very good. Killzone 2 especially managed to nail that dark and oppressive atmosphere. Both felt great to control but I had more fun with Mercenary. It's more varied and it let's you experiment more. I don't feel like it was made by a B-team at all. It pretty much delivered what it was set out to do.

I don't know what kind of expectations you have, but they sound unrealistic for a handheld game. It is pretty much PS3 experience on the go bar minor compromises in the graphical department.

Just played some Kung Fu Rabbit and think it is pretty meh. First of all, they call their game Kung Fu Rabbit and there is no real fighting going on, just platforming? I have read some reviews when it released and still thought it has some fighting :/

Platforming is too slow before you get the first artifact which upgrades your running speed and jump ability. Only problem is, you can only have one artifact activated and there are several more. There are also some one use items you can buy, a gameplay mechanic I don't like in any game.
The music gets annoying and repetitive very fast and the artstyle is nothing to write home about. Thought the rabbit looked cute, but the rest is really cheap flash style.
The first 10 levels I played weren't interesting and overall the game isn't much fun right now.

Happy that I didn't bought it earlier when VanWinkle was pimping the game. Now it's just priced at €2,49 so it doesn't really hurt. Ordering a beer is more expensive but I could have gone without buying this game easily.

NBCNews.com linked to a GAF post which, in turn, flooded the servers I believe.

I want a new game and it's cheap. Been waiting for it for a while, will grab malicious despite top post. That part about the framerate seals it :)

Malicious rebirth? Any reason not to buy? About to the walk to a wee-fee cafe now, will take vita... Guess I'll have a burger for dinner again :p

Depends on your interest level, I suppose.
I'm struggling with wanting to buy it but not wanting to support the ridiculous price and the fact that they still haven't fixed the framerate dips.

Yes the art style isn't amazing, and the music is nothing to write home about, but it shouldn't be expected to be. It was only like $5 bucks, even before the sale. With that said, it has some really nice and increasingly difficult platforming. I wouldn't have any problem continuing to recommend the game to people who want an inexpensive but fun platformer. At least keep at it for a little while.

I agree with pretty much everything you said except for the dialogue writing. I thought that it was somewhat believable, but really cheesy overall.

Other than that, Mercenary is on a short list of my favorite Vita games. It's not quite as good a game as Uncharted Golden Abyss, but it definitely has better graphics and the included online multiplayer is a plus.

Honestly, though, I really want a good first-person shooter in the same vein as Unit 13. I love the structure in that game with the 35 missions and 8 boss battles and something about it just makes it perfect to play in short bursts..which is exactly what I want in a handheld game. My biggest gripe with Killzone Merc is that the missions were too long for a handheld and had no checkpoints. It didn't affect me that much because I just put my Vita in sleep mode while missions were paused, but it would've been nice to play a round or two of Spelunky here and there without losing my mid-mission progress.

Sorry to hear Smokey got banned, will miss your posts man, hope you're back soon.

Doh well I just bought it, hopefully framerate is bearable, I think my tolerance ance is increasing for it anyway. It's 10 quid, never played the ps3 version, seems like a pretty quality game. A lot of indie ports that are late release for the same price, sometimes even more.

Fancied some burger king instead so will have to wait till the shop closes to go right up to it and download max speed. Shouldn't be long now :p

Watching blue máximas video and omegas impressions seems decent. Looking forward to trying it out, not long now. Luckily tropic thunder is on tv here too.

Will look into the worms game, hopefully it's decent. If a few people are up for games here it'd be worth picking up for me.

Once you're spotted they don't ever forget about you either and there's no restart checkpoint option so you have to die (and then re-collect any intel you had just found).

I got into the habit of heading back to the nearest merchant box to enter the store whenever I'd do a few successful stealth kills, especially intel interrogations or if I knew I didn't want to hack something again. That would softsave whatever I did like a checkpoint.

At times it was cheesy and the hired mercs often like to mention how they'd do everything for money, but the arms dealer, Kratek, Grey, Justus, his dad and the Helghast protector dialogue were handled better than what I'm used to in FPS games. There is usually hardly any dialogue and what's there is often cringe worthy. I guess I was expecting a really dumbed down dialogue and got too impressed when it's just done better than what's available XD

Unit 13 was great. I'd love to have both type of games more on the vita. And I do agree about the no checkpoints. It should have been there.

Edit: My bad... it's Forbidden Floor that's supposed to be hard.

It's a lot like Mega Man in that you CAN choose any order for the boss stages, but you really SHOULDN'T and it's a matter of trying out the various stages until you find one where you can get a new power.

Do the Airship level... I forget what it's called -- that one is definitely doable with only the base powers.

I found the first stage the worse when I played it in PS3. And I think I started with the airship level. After that, I played 2 more screens and found the game a lot easier to get into. I gets a lot better when you earn one or two power-ups. Still, it didn't really clicked on me, so I returned to Catherine xD

Just ordered Silent Hill: Book of Memories. I passed on it when it came out and don't expect it to be great, but it was only $12 new on Amazon with Prime shipping. Now I just need retail copies of Uncharted, Wipeout, UmvsC3, DOA5 & Katamari.

Watched a twitch stream of Disgaea D2 last night... it's got me pheening to get Disgaea 4 again with the Vita release, and I really, really hope D2 gets a port too. Everything looks so sharp, crisp and tightened up in D2.

Do yourself a favor and buy the DLC for SH:BoM before you start playing it. It's much more enjoyable with the extra variety it offers.

Played the rest of today's purchases.

The Uncharted card game is fine. Never was into card games but got interested because of the recent surge of PC titles and I am also a Uncharted fan.
Think it is unfair that the attack rounds aren't synchronous but that is my only beef with the gameplay so far.

Only sucks that I now need to get some free memory space so I can download Golden Abyss to import my savegame :/
Maybe they should have used the trophies for that.

Worms plays like Worms and there isn't much to say about that. The touchscreen controls work well and are a nice addition.
The graphics look a little bit muddy and from an art standpoint, I prefer the oldschool 2D look. They said it changed to 3D for better physics and destructability. Somehow, I find the latter quiet lacking right now. Maybe because I am used to blowing up large chunks of earth after each explosion, which doesn't happen often from what I have played.

There is 1 thing I have mention though. WHO IS THE IDIOT WHO THOUGHT SQUARE SHOULD BE JUMP AND CROSS SHOOT?
It goes against every game control convention we have were cross is always used for jumping and square for attacks. Of course, there is no way to customize the controls. I don't get it why devs don't include this option.

Yes, this is a minor thing to be pissed about and it doesn't really hinder me playing it. Still, it is stupid and I hope someone at Team17 reads this and his feelings are hurt!

Ok, thanks. Thought you can just start anywhere so I was going from left to right.

All of the stages are doable from the start, but you have to be good at reading the boss's attacks. The Holder of the Sword (Forbidden Floor) and Holder of the Lance (Forsaken Library) are the hardest imo.
EDIT: I would suggest killing the Holder of the Lance since you can counter the Holder of the Sword with it.
Also, from what I've read about the PS3 version, Malicious Rebirth performs better.
Still testing to make sure though.

Anyone know exactly where/why the framerate dropped in the PS3 version? I'm having issues pinpointing where it slows down.

Will do.

I finally played some PS All-Stars here, too... it's pretty fun. I managed to get the Gravity Rush & Starhawk DLC back when it was still free, a long time ago, but I ended up buying & Zeus/Isaac. Kinda disheartening how badly it did, and how much it got roasted. I remember players who enjoyed the game lamenting the loss of that leaked Gravity Rush background. Wouldn't mind seeing a sequel that ups the ante and makes a decent splash, even if it was F2P, so long as it was still balanced and piecemeal prices were still reasonable if you chose to buy the whole thing.

Beat story 1 of Malicious! On to the Rebirth chapter.
The final boss was pretty easy once you learned to just-guard his attacks for aura.

Any happy games on the PSN store?

Square just shot me and I need to smile

My heart can't take it...

I did buy a couple of different armors but found it a chore to keep switching from the vendor menu, it would have been easier if it was in the pause menu. Eventually I just picked the one that gave me more money per kill and went with that for the rest of the game. I imagine for the contracts I'll pick the one that serves whatever contract I pick the best.

Will do.

It's definitelly worth the $5 (or less) -- it added 2 enemy types, a bunch of accessories that you can equip, some extra costumes for your character, some extra weapon types, etc. The extra weapon types are what really mattered to me -- it helped increase the variety of the weapons that I used regularly... the torch is worth $5 alone because you get it a lot in early levels, it's a great melee weapon, and it sells for 800... so you can scavenge them and build money quickly to buy upgrades and such.

As for Sony Smash, I wasn't a huge fan, though it had some great features when compared to it's predecessor. At least it has combos. And supers.

Beat story 1 of Malicious! On to the Rebirth chapter.
The final boss was pretty easy once you learned to just-guard his attacks for aura.

Good Job. To answer your above post, I saw it in those two arenas I mentioned yesterday, if I remember correctly. The Battlefield of Yore and the one with the Knight with the gun -- it's easy to get LARGE mobs of enemies on those. Don't kill too many and just let them spawn til max while you focus on the boss itself... if anything should drag the framerate down, that should do it.

Ok, thanks. Thought you can just start anywhere so I was going from left to right.

You can... just like Megaman.

But you know how, say, it's best to start with Gutsman because he's got an easy pattern and it's not like he's weak to any of the other robot weapons? Then you take his weapon and go after Cutsman...

Well, it's like that, I think, where some bosses are weaker to the lance or the sword or whatever. I know the counters require you to have certain weapons equiped. Blue Maxima does one in his video because he broke all the platforms off the boss and then jumped in front of it with the fly power. Those take CHUNKS off the boss's life, I think.

Oh yeah... and never forget... E-D-F E-D-F!

Ugh I tried an online game of Killzone, knew that was going to be a mistake. That might have been the worst online shooter I ever played. Insanely small map, everything kills you in 1 hit (except my guns of course), and drones flying around everywhere 1 shotting everyone and the game's sluggish controls mixed with the Vita's sub par analog sticks and shoulder buttons made moving fast and accurately difficult. Figures to melee someone you need to do a drawn out QTE with the gimmick touch screen so I die every time before I can finish it. Does that happen to anyone else though? Of course not. I got melee killed twice.

Won't be trying that disaster again. I hope contracts mode is more fun or else this is going to be one of my fastest trade ins ever.

Uh oh, what have they done now?

Remaking FFVI on iOS with a RPG Maker style like FFV. Why square...? Why...?

They do know there's a 3DS with a great install base where there fans are at right? Sure the Vita's install base is very small compared to the 3DS, but imagine a true remake on that system. Darn you Square.... 3DS or Vita, I would've been happened with either one. Mobile RPG Marker FFVI... No....

They do. They make me want to buy it if the performance issues are mostly gone... waiting for the next update from our tester. ;)

--

I promised Cyborg I'd upload this.
This was taken after I died about 5 seconds into a mission in SS -- I had the resolute sigil on (1 hp) and wasn't aware that Cyborg had changed the pact and it was one that you're in the stomach map for (where your HP constantly drains cause everything is acid). I told him to immediately sacrifice me since reviving me was pointless. He wanted to know how low my score was at the end of the round.

wut...

I put over 10 hours into the beta and I've played my fair share of matches after it released and thought it was fantastic and a ton of fun.

I'm willing to bet, based on your rampant criticisms of the game in this thread over the past week, that you will hate contracts mode too. At least you'll get some decent credit for it, I think.

Ahahaha. This is fantastic. :lol

Yeah, I had a blast online. Picked it up within a couple matches and was playing competitively enough to not feel put out.

On the FFVI remake news... like I said in the thread, I would have been just as displeased with a polygonal abomination full of jaggy, triangular midgets that look like Romancing SaGa 3 on PS2, on 3DS ala FFIV on DS.

I started playing Dragon's Crown earlier, wow...everything about the game is beautiful! I asked this a few nights ago, but can anyone here recommend a good grip?

I don't know why... but I'm being compelled to buy Malicious Rebirth dammit.

I was torn like this on Lone Surivor too, but I already own (practically) the same game on PC... with Malicious, I have so much other stuff to play on my PS3 if I ever play it, that I don't think I'd ever get to it.

Plus the spend $50, get $10...

Dammit -- I have enough games I should play!
