Well it's a Pokémon game which mean interesting features don't carry over to the next gen.
I still miss the stupid effects we could put on pokéballs. I think that was in D/P/Pt. I did expect medals to come back though. Seemed like a stupid thing GF would decide to carry on.

Anyway, it's nice to have customisation for a gen. It won't be back in the Ru/Sa remakes nor in Gen 7.
 
GameFreak has always been a smaller team with modest budgets.

I think this being their first foray into 3D with Pokemon a mainline game, with the need for full 3D assets, meant they put a lot of resources on that, hence the small postgame.

I think the Z version will remedy this somewhat.

So that should be okay for Pre 6th gen?

Where is the ideal place to test them though, Battle Maison to boost them to level 50? Looking to work on an Axew.

Huh, interesting, looks like the Judge tells you when you have a 0 IV too. I just checked my Blastoise and he says:

I see... I see...
This Pokémon's potential is decent all around.
That's how I judge it, anyway.
Incidentally, I would say that its greatest potential lies in its Sp. Def stat.
It's definitely got some good stats. That's how I judge it.
But how can you make it through battle with this kind of Defense stat?

Just checked using a Reset Bag and Serebii's IV calc and its Defense IV is either 0 or 1, so...

Edit: Is this actually new? Never came across it in earlier gens, but then again I suppose I just never had a 0 IV Pokemon then either.

Serebii is saying one of my Axew has 31 IVs in Attack.

Level 1.
Adamant.
Axew.
Likes to thrash about.
12 HP, 7 Atk, 6 Def, 4 Sp. A, 5 Sp. Def, 6 Spd.

The judge says it has above average stats. Seems pretty good to me.

Also have another with 6 Sp. Def, which seems to imply 16 more IVs there.

They're generally inaccurate at low levels. I wait about 30 levels before even trying to plug them in .

I'm sure there are more. The real question is whether they can be found in-game. On the one hand, there will no doubt be Mega Evolutions that are saved for special promotions and events. On the other hand, there may also be stones that are simply extremely well-hidden in game -- perhaps restricted to certain times of day, weather, seasons, etc, or requiring the dowsing machine, hidden in some farflung corner of the world, or offered up by NPCs only under very particular circumstances (I.E. Pokémon you're carrying, etc). We don't know yet how deep the rabbit hole goes.

Hell, one might be found by using Strength on the truck by the SS Anne and getting Mew then surfing up and down Cinnabar Islands coast.
 
Any good analysis available for Carbink? I don't expect him to be an OU or Uber, but I wonder how decent the stats and movepool get. He might be a neat novelty Pokémon to carry around. I just love his design so much.

EDIT: Carbink appears to have INSANE Defense and Special Defense... but all his other stats are weak. He has Clear Body as his default Ability, but Sturdy is available as a Hidden Ability -- I wonder how you access Hidden Abilities in this game? I also wonder if Carbink has some moves that would allow him to disrupt enemy teams while he sponges up hits via his high defenses (low HP permitting).

Hidden Abiliies are in Hordes or Friend Safari :)

When you have spent two days straight looking and come up with nothing, then you know when to call defeat.
 
IVs are boosted stats from super training, right? Or some pokemon caught in the wild already have some boosted stats? If that is the case, is it possible to reset them so they can be distributed how you'd like using supertraining?

I might be totally misunderstanding the idea of IV's, so I apologize.
 
IVs are random.

Even if you got a Pokémon with good IVs in the Friend Safari it may not have the natures you want.

Not sure how good IVs affect breeding.
 
Man, Honedge line is my new favorite pokemon. I wish I had luck in breeding shinies, because I'd so want a shiny Honedge as my eternal trophy. :P

- EVs are gained through Super Training, you can have up to 510 EVs total for a Pokémon with a maximum of 255 EVs for each stat.

- IVs are values which are randomly assigned to each every Pokémon and are not increased through Super Training. The maximum IVs for any stat is 31.

Well, are IVs determined by nature? Example: I caught a modest abra, he is now level 20 Alakazam. I have done zero super training. Does he have IVs? How would I know and how can I reset it if they arent where I want them to be?

Ah I was mixing up IVs with EVs, still confused about IVs though, they are simply random upon catching the pokemon then and theres nothing you can do to influence them?

All Pokémon have IVs. They are fixed, you cannot change them.
 
IVs are like Pokemon genetics. They explain why you can catch two Pokemon of the same species, at the same level, with the same nature, and they will have different stats. Each stat will have its own IV, a value between 0-31, and the higher the number, the higher the stat. 31 is a Perfect IV. A Pokemon's IVs are set at birth and cannot be changed.

EVs represent the training you give your Pokemon, and can be directly affected by the player through either battling with other Pokemon or Super Training. Think of EVs like allocating stats in other RPGs, although the system is a bit more convoluted than that.

So with IVs, a Pokemon could potentially have +31 in every stat? Or 31 points distributed randomly among each stat?
