Pop quiz, hotshot!

US or UK?

Yes, Wayne Rooney and Prince Charles represent the north and south of England respectively. While Hollywood represents every US citizen.

Is it OK I wonder to start on other stereotypes? Africans vs. African Americans perhaps, how about Jews Vs. Christians? Or is it only OK to discuss the ugliness of British people?

I'm British. I have a right to call my people ugly.

Pop quiz, hotshot!

US or UK?

This guy is 100% an American

There are certainly some british people I can easily spot. Put any BBC show on mute and it's usually pretty obvious.

When I was in North Wales, I don't know if they could tell I was American, but they sure as hell knew I wasn't Welsh. When my wife and I walked into a shop, the employees immediately switched from speaking Welsh to English. When other customers came in, they went right back to Welsh. (Maybe because the other customers were regulars, but I think the employees just knew.)

In London, everyone thought I was English, maybe because my red hair makes it a safe bet. In Germany, people thought I was German.

But in Australia, they know right away. They just freaking know. Before you say a word, they know where you're from and they start making fun of you immediately. Even though they're the ones wearing the sleeveless shirts.

No. I mean unless you are going by the obvious stereotypes like weight or teeth decay. I will say that it's eeire how British actors can so effortless mimic being American in their accent. Like that dude from House? That's not natural man. Whenever you see us try to play British people it's so funny, but like you guys can do it effortlessly.

This is a pretty gross generalization.

Watch a fair amount of British television and you'll inevitably encounter numerous fake American accents that are hilariously awful.

Have you ever heard the scouse accent? Your ears will bleed

I just watched a Youtube clip from the Graham Norton show to get me up to snuff, but yeah, okay that sounds kinda bad. I'm probably going to get stoned to death here, but I love what you guys call a Cockney accent? Whatever Rose speaks from Doctor Who. I like that. And Irish accents. They are majestic. I've heard people from overseas say they like southern accents or something. I guess it might be kind of the same thing. Like I think people from overseas see the southern accent as that debutant-style all proper style slow-talking drawl and all that. Round here in the south you don't talk like that unless you've got money. It's mostly improper English with the word "done" thrown in like a valley girl would say "like".

Like here's my impression of what people from overseas think the southern accent sounds like:

"Child (Chai- -old), gracious (gray-shus) me, you (u-eww) sure ( sher) are giving (ge-vin) me the vapors (vay-purrs). Why (wai), if I don't say (sey), you are the most handsome gentlemen (gentile-man) I have ever (ev-var) seen."

In the real world it actually sounds like this.

"Boy (Boi)" - or if you are a girl it sounds like "gerl" -followed by you done (dunn) stole my heart (hart). We done gone up to granpappy's house and his old lady done threw him out. It's a done mess I tell you. He done nothing wrong to that lady, but he done screwed up. Only thing I heard was the law (police) come down there and told him that he can't be beating on the dang old woman like that. It aint right."

We use done and aint and dang and did I mention done? Done is like thrown into everything. You can't even order a sandwhich without using the word done here. It's like: "I done want a whopper but I done want ketchup and onions but I don't want them done tomatoes and done make it quick or I'm done gonna get mad" "Are you done your order? "Yes, I'm done, done my order".

It's not really sexy, but you guys with your proper English and even that cockney accent. Even when you sound dumb you sound smart.

British people have a very pale skin.

Not entirely accurate. :p

I can tell the American from a mile away. Rooney is a proper English lad, 95% of Britain look like him.

Rooney is of Irish decent. You're basically saying 95% of English people are ugly. :p

Irish people do share common ancestry with the rest of the British Isles though. It's funny actually, all this talk of Celts and Anglo-Saxons, etc, yet in fact, genetically the British and Irish share closest common ancestry with the Basque people. In terms of culture and language, Anglo-Saxons have had a big influence, but they weren't really the majority in England or any other place within the British Isles. Neither were the Celts. The majority were always indigenous British.

Despite the separation of the British Isles from continental Europe as a consequence of the last ice age, the genetic record indicates the British and Irish broadly share a closest common ancestry with the Basque people who live in the Basque Country by the Pyrenees.[60][61] Oppenheimer continues that the majority of the people of the British Isles share genetic commonalities with the Basques, ranging from highs of 90% in Wales to lows of 66% in East Anglia.

Actually, yes. For the most part the facial structure is usually different. I can look at a British looking person and think "I'm sure that person is British" and I'm right 80% of the time.

I find it harder to distinguish Americans from Australians/New Zealanders.

Now, I'd love to see a British person try to play a redneck.

I will say I don't understand how you guys maintained your British and Irish accents and we created these weird fucking dialects in America like the southern accent, the north eastern accent, Midwest accent, etc.

It may just be that I live in the middle of nowhere in redneck country, but I'd seriously consider proposing to a woman if she had a British or Irish accent. It's not fair. Get er done is common lexicon around here, yet even when you guys order lunch it sounds like you are quoting Shakespeare. It's not fair.

Yeah. All this talk about how easy it is to spot a British person, how come you never spotted Hugh Laurie? :p

And in terms of accents and dialects, they've probably changed a lot over thousands of years.

This thread makes no sense. Seeing as the majority of White Americans come from Europe, how could there be a physical difference in someone born in the US verse someone born in the UK or Germany? Has anyone ever factored in mannerisms? I noticed when I lived in Memphis TN, was born there, guys from South Memphis had a different demeanor about themselves compared to guys from North Memphis. Not to shit on the OP's thread but I'm sorry but there is no physical difference of a white guy from the US vs UK. Now I will say that when you look at Europeans further East, then you can definitely see a difference.
they tend to be uglier :P

Your people? I wonder if the people you're calling ugly are OK with you as their self appointed leader.

Having lived on both sides of the pond for many years I can say we both look very simliar. I assume we are talking white-european descent americans and white european Britons (ingoring the fact that both countries have a melting pot of ethnicity).

Sure, comparing US sitcom actors versus your next door neighbour, you're gonna see a difference.

African Americans are very light skinned for obvious reasons and have bigger body mass most times. Africans average height is lower too.

African myself. weird English accent and 6'1

It is strange how foreign people find it hard to tell different accents from other countries. To me there are only 2 accents in America, the American accent and the southern accent lol. I also cannot tell the difference between a Canadian and an American accent.

Americans in general seem to completely ignore Northern England when it comes to accents. Whenever i see a English person on an American show they always have a pretty posh Southern England accent. A lot of people in Southern England have lazy pronunciation and sound a bit rough. Things like ''Nothing'' turn into ''Noffink'' or ''Something'' turns into ''Sumfink'' i actually do that myself and i'm fully aware how retarded it sounds whenever i do it. I have been trying to stop doing it, but i just can't lol

So to you there is the southern twang and then the New York accent? Just those 2?

If it makes you feel better, I absolutely loved visiting Northern England. Not only was it beautiful, but I found the people to be the most charming and friendly in the country.

Yes, actually. I'm not sure what it is, but I can almost always differentiate. I was born in the UK and lived there for 8 years before moving to the US, so that may be why.

There are times when I've seen pictures of people and go "yeah, dude looks british."
They definitely have a different facial structure. But then you have people like Christian Bale that completely surprised me.

I've never seen this type of facial structure in America.

Yeah thank you. Obviously mannerisms, dress, movement, etc. play a huge part in this.

Or maybe people see mutts and think American. Is everyone purebred in your country?

It's a pretty ridiculous question in and of itself because the vast majority of Americans have much more than British ancestry. I am of Irish, German and Polish heritage, so I would hope I don't look like I am British (which by this thread I assume means English yes I know Ireland is part of the "British Isles")

I'm British and have lived in Canada for 7 years. I used to work with a black-british guy and we were friends, somebody came up to me in the office once and asked "why does that African American guy speak with a British accent?"

So apparently you can only spot Britons abroad if they're pastey-white and have bad hair/teeth.

btw, could have sworn I just read an article in the paper about the UK having one of lowest rates of gum disease in the world - above the US.

Haha, wow.

The closest thing I've done like that is confuse South African accent with a UK accent I couldn't pin to a particular region. Both instances the guys were white.

This guy understands^

The guy in that picture is 100% from the Merseyside area. I would bet good money on that.

I guess it's a grass always greener on the other side of things thing. Like, honestly, if I woke up tomorrow and someone said to me something like "Jolly ho, Gov-nor, oi, you be taking the lift?" I would fucking kiss the ground I was walking on. I mean how do you guys do it. How do you walk outside and hear those beautiful accents? I mean you even have words like "lavatory" for the bathroom. I went to a proper rich school in the states and I was always confused about why there weren't chemistry experiments and and, you know, science things going on in the place where I pissed until I realized lavatory and laboratory aren't the same thing.

Oh and there's tons of American accents in America. I probably fall into the same category when thinking about the UK. Like a Canadian accent is completely different from a northern American accent. A New York accent is completely different from a Boston accent. Then there's the Midwest, but even a Chicago accent is different from a Midwest accent.

I just wish we had like Scottish or British accents here in the states. A Scottish accent is the voice of love to me. You could be ordering fish and chips or something and I'd melt.

I mean do you realize how awesome your accents are in the UK or whatever. They are so amazing.

Yeah thank you. Obviously mannerisms, dress, movement, etc. play a huge part in this.

I would say people in the US are maybe the most mixed of any country in the world. But white Americans don't have a particular look compared to their European cousins at all. Usually Americans will be fatter but other than that, you couldn't tell a German from a white guy from Colorado. I date a girl whose mom was French and day was American Italian and she looked like a normal white chick.

I notice that a lot of British people have darker spots around their eyes. They also look very similar to Nordic people, I guess
