US Federal Government Shutdown | Shutdown Shutdown, Debt Ceiling Raised

i dont even know how something like that can be changed. isn't it something that the house makes up rules for themselves?

I don't think the procedural move is even that novel for a controversial issue. However, make that move and then sending out your talking heads to say "Obama REALLY shutdown the government" has to be a new low.

In a few minutes, House Republicans will meet in the Capitol’s basement. The chief topic of conversation: the emerging Senate deal. But before the meeting even begins, House conservatives are bashing it behind the scenes, and they’re pushing the leadership to reject the compromise. A flurry of phone calls and meetings last night and early this morning led the consensus among the approximatley 50 Republicans who form the House GOP’s right flank. They’re furious with Senate Republicans for working with Democrats to craft what one leading Tea Party congressman calls a “mushy piece of s—t.” Another House conservative warns, “If Boehner backs this, as is, he’s in trouble.”

But that’s unlikely to happen. As of 8:30 a.m., House conservatives believe the leadership is well aware of their unhappiness, and they expect Boehner to talk up the House’s next move: another volley to the Senate, which would extend the debt ceiling, reopen the government, and set up a budget conference, plus request conservative demands that go beyond the Senate’s outline.

“What they’ll come up with in the Senate will not get the support of most House Republicans,” predicts a House conservative strategist. “And thus, after a lot of hand-wringing, it’ll be DOA. Just like with BCA in 2011, the most important question is, what can pass the House? Everything else is subordinate to that. So, while the Senate is taking the lead right now, I expect the focus will soon shift back to the House, and back to the idea of doing a 6-week extension of the debt ceiling. While Obama and Reid won’t like it, they don’t want to go past Oct. 17, either. The politics of the debt ceiling are different from the shutdown. And so, we feel they’ll reluctantly accept it as a stopgap measure.”

“How can folks be satisfied with income verification being put into place?” asks a top House conservative aide. “That was already law of the land, and the administration just chose to delay it. Just another thing that I think McConnell can be dinged on. I just don’t see how there can be widespread support for this in the conference in the House, and I am amazed at how much bad blood has developed between House and Senate Republicans the past few days.”

Senate conservatives, for their part, are also skeptical, and at least a handful of them are planning to complain to Senate minority leader Mitch McConnell this morning when Senate Republicans meet. Senators Lee, Cruz, and their allies aren’t expected to back it. “Things are still fluid,” explains a Senate Republian aide. “The initial buzz wasn’t great. It was seen as a really small step forward, like a free Coke and pack of crackers. Nice, but nothing to write home about.”

“The larger problem, particularly as we go forward for House members, is a free Coke and crackers aren’t going to cut it with Cruz, Heritage, FreedomWorks, and the Senate Conservatives Fund,” the aide adds. “They have been selling the idea they know the winning Powerball numbers and we are about to hit the jackpot. Expectations of what is achievable and what we can get out of this remain way out of whack…. Keep in mind the activists are still calling offices pushing for the full defund of Obamacare. The message has not been relayed to the grassroots that the defund option isn’t going to happen no matter how long we hold our breath or how much we wish it would happen.”

Fuck the 50 conservatives who stormed out. The rest of the GOP will vote for it. Boehner is in trouble either way, he has been in trouble with the Tea Party this entire time, and he has to know this by now -- he HAS to. Do the right thing, ignore the Tea Party wing of your party and their financing, and have everyone else vote on the bill. He has enough to get it passed.

If Boehner would just grow a pair, he'd realize he doesn't need to fear the Tea Party sect. He can align himself with the establishment. Wall Street is doing the same. They'll pump just as much if not more money into races where Tea Party challengers are trying to upset the establishment. He doesn't need the Tea Party and yet thanks to Gerrymandering he will probably keep his majority next year regardless.

If Wall Street backs establishment candidates in bitter primary battles, either way, a Democrat will not win. Boehner has nothing to fear. And he should be courting the establishment GOP, which makes up the majority of his majority, to have a reliable sect to nullify the Tea Party's extreme demands. That's all he has to do and he would never lose his job.

Aren't those who marched with Cruz Yesterday?

Yup. Being one myself, I don't understand the disconnect between the veterans who served the war in Iraq and Afghanistan (OIF & OEF) and some Vietnam and mostly all of WW2 veterans.

Edit: my father doesn't support Cruz or the Tea Party and is a diehard democrat

Not true. They did inherit a large company, but it was no way near as large as it is right now. They grew it hundreds of times in size. They did inherit a lot of money, but many others did as well, and rarely anyone managed to increase their wealth as much as the Koch bros did.

No sorry, but it doesn't take someone "super smart" to do what they did which is what you said. When you're already given the foundation it makes things a lot easier. I'm not saying they're idiots or have no business saavy but pretending they did something remarkable simply isn't true.Their father was the innovator.

I know this is the threat they're making, but at this point it looks like the money's going to flow to establishment candidates next year.
And no matter how this ends this is what is going to happen. Boehner will be saved by the establishment. If he can't realize this by now he's a fucking idiot. He can stand up to the Tea Party and not lose them because gerrymandering allowed them to cheat their way into having a majority anyway. And his own special interests will protect him from getting primaried.

It isn't looking like it. Everyone who votes for the deal is getting primaried, so Cruz and the Tea Party are basically holding the hostage takers hostage.

Yea well, they're dipshits who don't want to get primaried.

At this point they should be seeing the writing on the wall and they are going to be primaried regardless. They blinked.

Yea just like Donald Trump.

The clock is ticking America, and everyday this drags on, the more angry the public gets. All it takes is one stupid act of emotion and this whole thing could unravel.

The more scary part is who are they angry at.

We know who they should be angry at, but it's much easier to dismiss the whole government as inward looking and ineffectual.

I'm an Australian so I don't have a dog in this fight, but let me tell you, in the eyes of the rest of the world, especially countries that have had socialized healthcare that is far more generous than Obamacare for over half a century in some cases, we are just staggered at how much bullshit the American public are letting the Tea Party and the GOP get away with. Opinion polls are one thing but elections are entirely another. The U.S public should be looking at gerrymandering and wondering which George Orwell book this shit crawled out of.

Oh dear, and John Boehner is a key player here.

RAISE THE SHANTY TOWNS!!!

The disconnect? One group are a bunch of old white xenophobes and the others aren't.

If Boehner was just going to cozy up to Wall Street and establishment Republicans to hold onto his job, then why wouldn't he have done so already?

He's not going to stand up to the Tea Party. He's going to back their demands.

He's a spineless fuckwad. He'll just cower in fear at the feet of the worthless Tea Party begging to keep his job.
Literally worse than the ice age. (The event and the movie)

And he's going to look like a fool that let a minority ruin the country. How else he can not see this? In what planet does the Tea Party keeps growing?

He's already done that though.

Boehner could have ended at this at any time but chooses not to. He wants at least a good amount of Tea Partiers on his side when it comes to passing a deal. He's not going to stand up to any of them.

It's shitty that they've giving into the medical device tax for 2 years, but only getting a few months of reprieve from the debt and budget situations. We're going to be right back here in January, with nothing to show for it except that Democrats gave in again.

Cruz and his thugs will throw it out. You watch. They've already gone all in on this. They aren't about to pull out now and lose their credibility. They took the GOP down a path that could almost be described as a suicide bombing and there's no going back for them now.

Anyone who thinks that Cruz and his dancing parade have the sort of honor to reap what they sowed on themselves and prevent a default and almost certain economic turmoil is far braver then I.

Nothing with the Vitter amendment or medical device tax will pass the Senate or be signed by Obama. At least not without some concessions to democrats. This is a DOA bill. Pass the Senate bill you assholes. Boehner needs to bring it to the floor.

I hope Obama vetoes this, if the details are true.
Need to stand firm and paint the Tea Party like the terrorists they are.
There's no way this will pass the senate, nor does Boehner believe it will. Having said that, if it did hypothetically pass, there is no way Obama would veto this last minute deal. Senate democrats would never put him in that position.

e: it won't even pass the House without democrat votes.

Are these 2 the only real changes?

Those are huge changes though. The Vitter Amendment is toxic. And the med device tax repeal in the Senate was not on the table afaik. That was going to be later, in Jan/Feb.

This is "huge" in the sense that the only place left to go next year is delaying the individual mandate, defunding the law, etc., should this pass.

Would die in the Senate with probably a few Republicans joining in in killing it, because they're pissed about doing this work just to have Speaker Cruz's Shadow Caucus piss all over it.

These are the "deals" Boehner's trying to make, the House Democrats haven't done shit yet

wouldn't that mean only (more) rich people would be in politics

Lobbyist money is the real problem, not rich politicians. It's basically waving a wod of cash in a pollys face and saying "this is yours if...."

It's bribery politics and it's immoral.
