US Federal Government Shutdown | Shutdown Shutdown, Debt Ceiling Raised

Lobbyist money is the real problem, not rich politicians. It's basically waving a wod of cash in a pollys face and saying "this is yours if...."

It's bribery politics and it's immoral.

There's money everywhere though. It's no longer a matter of giving up your principles for the lobby money, but rather finding out who gives out the most cash for your warped sensibilities.

Fuck that deal. It's essentially giving into the extortion threat. Absolutely unacceptable.

All this does is set the precedent to get right back here in a few months and have the republicans stranglehold the government for a few more policy concessions.

This shit needs to end NOW!!

House republicans are still insanely stupid. They keep going after the ACA after it's been shown that's not going to work. Something republican senators have admit was stupid to do. It's the one thing they know that Obama isn't going to agree to and for what a delay of a few weeks!? Then we start this all over again.

The medical device tax suspension and the Vitter amendment will not pass the Senate. I hope this isn't what Reid was talking about yesterday regarding "tremendous progress."

As little as Dems have given in these discussions, they've still given some. Thus, I'm really nervous that Obama will take the blame now if he rejects it.

I doubt it. He seems to be even more determined than Obama.

I wouldn't say that. Obama's entire legacy as President is resting on how he acts during this whole fiasco and he knows it. If he concedes now, that is all he will ever be remembered for, just as all of Clinton's hard work was immediately forgotten because of a cum stain that didn't wash out.

I know that Obama hasn't exactly been the model for conviction so far, but he must realize that now is the time to turn that image around.

There's no way this will pass the senate, nor does Boehner believe it will. Having said that, if it did hypothetically pass, there is no way Obama would veto this last minute deal. Senate democrats would never put him in that position.

e: it won't even pass the House without democrat votes.

My bad it said House details, I thought it was Senate.

I don't want the med device tax to be postponed, but what is wrong with the Vitter amendment? Is there something more than just making congress and cabinet members a part of the exchange? Because if that is all it is I would think it would be a good thing.

CONFIRMED House details....
This is the House bill not the senate bill folks. It is irrelevant and probably won't pass the House.

I said seems. Reid has been a rock so far. I'm not saying Obama wants to cave.

Reid seems more intense. It may have to do with personality more than anything else.

I doubt that house bill will pass the Hastert rule

Is there anything else? What are the Dems getting out of this? That seems like a gift to the GOP.

repealing/delaying the medical device tax is a bipartisan lobbying effort. It's going to be repealed eventually so this is just a face-saving throw-in for the GOP. Income verification is already part of the law anyway so the only thing the GOP is getting out of this proposal is the vitter amendment which I don't see happening

It might be interesting if it was required that a special college degree be earned before you can run for office. The curriculum could include courses about topics that are very important to know while governing, like economics, military science, etc.
Well, there's PPE. A term I'd never heard 'til I came to university! It's pretty much regarded as "The career politician's degree", at least it was around Uni. How many elected reps have such a degree?

Amazing Grace? What, do they think they're attending America's funeral or something.

Fucking psychos.

This kind of shit is how cults start their meetings.

After the stirring rendition, they passed around bagged milk. Why? One representative said 'for it is the blood of Cruz'.

The House bill won't pass the House?
Ted Cruz met with 20 tea party house members this morning. I wouldn't be surprised if this bill is too weak for them.

Boehner hasn't whipped for this bill. If it fails he'll put the senate bill on the floor; this is exactly how the December/January "fiscal cliff" fiasco ended, with Boehner having to yank a failed concession bill and pass the senate language. Pelosi just has to keep democrats in line, opposed to this bill, and there's a decent chance it'll fail.

Which is how I predicted this might end. Boehner has to basically do nothing except say, "Well, we're out of time."

That way he gets to keep his speakership.

Probably not, Boehner cant control his caucus and democrats have no reason to vote for it.

I wish I was as optimistic as you are. The majority of the GOP caucus has had no problem pushing for maximum leverage while a shutdown is going on.

The hardliners are clearly trying to intimidate Boehner but he could end this right now if he wanted to.

So uh Canadian here...
Trying to understand whats happening, is there any chance of the House Rs actually getting what they want? Seems like their asking for some crazy things.

They'll hold his feet to the fire just like they did in 2012, but I think you're right. He'll keep his speakership and the Tea Party will chalk this whole fucking debacle up in the win column... then start preparing for the next crisis they will create.

They had their ride. Boehner "tried" to save it. It's over now.

Dems cannot let anything related to ACA pass. Doing so would be such a big trophy for the Tea Party to show off to the base that it would guarantee shut downs every time.

That's so one-sided. The Democrats are getting a federal government, the Republicans should get something, too.

You see, this is why the Westminster system is just better, because you know what the party that lost the election gets?

Fucking nothing. They get the opportunity to sit on the opposite side of the chamber and reflect about why they lost and figure out what they need to do to win again, which usually involves throwing out the rundown and starting again. You know, like when you allow a group of Evangelical nutcases to take over your party and sit back and watch them commit electoral blackmail.
