Shoot the Core! - Gaf Shoot ‘em Up (aka Shooter/SHMUP) Reference Thread

Trust me, I tried. Even though I don't use Steam, a PC, or have ever gamed on a PC. Set up a Steam account, registered my name but was hit with the below. Sorry. Wanted to show some support:

Buy a $1 DLC for Dota 2 and your account will be upped to top tier or...
Have anyone gift you a game that costs $$$ or...
Buy a game.

... oh hey. It's nifty that this thread exists.
Of course it would be popular right now, what with Ikaruga appearing on Greenlight.

..... I don't suppose anyone here is a fan of Touhou?
welcome to the party!
I'm mostly interested in old Taito games these days, but also really like Konami horizontals and CAVE verts. I think 16 bit shmups are the incredibly cool, I didn't bring my Wii to college so I've been missing Gleylancer and the Soldier series.
I think my favorite shmup of all time is Raiden Fighters Jet.

... I'm so happy that mentioning Touhou isn't flamebait or anything. Thanks for the welcome.
I tried searching for Touhou stuff here for a long time and only really found a thread from back in 2008. I was worried that this place wasn't the place to mention I'm a really big Touhou fan.

Cave is also great. I love danmaku games in general. Though I also enjoy a lot of classics.
Cave is great. I love the DoDonPachi games. I'm still trying to master Dai Ou Jou before I move on to DaiFukkatsu or Sai Dai Ou Jou. Though I do own the games anyway.

I'd love it if Cave would put their games on Steam, too.

I also really enjoy playing Cho Ren Sha. It's interesting, a lot of my favourite SHMUPs aren't of that variety. But I love Cho Ren Sha. The gameplay is somehow simply addicting to me. It's a strange thing that I'm so into Cho Ren Sha because it doesn't appear to be a particularly noteworthy game.

There's a lot of other games for me to try to remember.

I don't dislike Daifukkatsu as much as some people. the bullet canceling doesn't bother me and I think it's kinda fun! Saidaioujou is definitely better, though. sometimes I think I enjoy it even more than Mushi Futari. :o

I've never played touhou. the only experiences I've had playing shmups on PC have been dreadful - mostly I'm just Saturn, PS2, 360 and Wii VC.

Huh, that's odd...

Based on that screencap, it looks like the PC port won't support online co-op. Hopefully the other online functions like global leaderboards and replay uploads/downloads are still there.

Installed the Batsugun Special EPROM on my PCB - makes an already great game amazing!

The color palette changes are nice - but the difficulty ramp is what makes this game a lot better. Things don't get too challenging until the middle of the 4th stage, but it's a steady progression in difficulty and makes it more approachable for non-shooter players.

My favorite addition is the plethora of secret PIGS! There were pigs before - but now we get 30x more pigs! And different pigs to boot! Regular pigs give you points, while hovering over red pigs will fill up your XP meter.

Pigs are great.

There's a shield, bigger bomb and other stuff I'm most likely missing, but this upgrade is worth it's weight in pigs for sure.

P.S. Is it just me, or did Special add your character's sticking an oversized thumbs-up out of his ship during a bomb?

Ooh, I did not know that about the red pigs. And I've definitely seen the big thumbs-up, so you're not crazy. Shit, now I want to go home and play this game all evening.

Man, imagine if Cave put stuff on Steam. Who am I kidding? I want everything on PC.

what is the difference between touhou and danmaku?
It's already been answered for me, but Touhou games are are part of the danmaku genre. Touhou is a franchise, while danmaku, a genre. Danmaku are games where a lot of bullets are on the screen, and to compensate for this, the hitbox is generally made smaller. Sometimes almost to the point of non-existence.

Other Danmaku games include DoDonPachi and most of Cave's offerings.
Man, imagine if Cave put stuff on Steam. Who am I kidding? I want everything on PC.
I feel much the same. For many reasons.

I like the options and convenience. Seems like I always have a PC on me. Having options like FRAPs to record video are always nice. And I always like being able to click an icon on the desktop to play a game.

I wish every game I care about could reach the PC so I could buy it and not have to rely on consoles any longer. I definitely don't buy consoles anymore for any reasons other than exclusives. As I find playing games on the PC to be much more convenient and fun.

If we see a Cave release on Steam I'd assume it would be Akai Katana since it was already ported to Windows for the arcade re-release.

A year ago I would have dismissed this as idle fanboy wishing, but in today's climate, it's not as far fetched as it once seemed. Especially with something like NESiCAxLive becoming a real thing for arcade game devs. NESiCA + Type X is essentially Steam + PC in terms of architecture and functionality. CAVE already have Akai Katana Shin up on NESiCAxLive, so it should be easy enough for them to slap together a PC port, see KOF XIII. More and more Japanese devs are becoming interested in Steam, so if we can show enough support for their games, it would be a no-brainer for CAVE to jump in. I suggest every one vote for Ikaruga on Greenlight, and buy it when it comes out.

One thing everyone needs to keep in mind is that despite NESiCA being by default the most viable arcade platform in a post-candy cab age, it is still a tough marketplace. To put it simply, NESiCA = Blazblue. People play the shit out of that on the cabinets, and to play almost anything else, you better show up early or ultra late at the game center. Even if people aren't playing Blazblue, they're playing KOF 13 etc. There's so many games that it can be tough to get on the machine as a shooter player.

NESiCA is known to be a royalty-based system, where income for arcade devs is measured per coin, meaning that if no one can play their game, they don't get any income.

All of the above said, I think NESiCA and to a lesser extent All.net Multi are undisputably the future of arcade shooters and fighters. However whether that real income is really enticing enough is to be seen IMO.

Obviously spicing that up with potential Steam ports now that you've ported to PC architecture is one way to handle it, and Treasure made a wise move here.

Is there no operator option to force a given cabinet to play a specific game only? I'm actually kind of surprised to hear customers have that much control over what game is being run in those.

Right, that's what I meant. No matter what the actual market conditions look like (I totally believe BlazBlue is monopolizing it), the actual physical work has been done. The fact that it's so tough on NESiCA may actually prompt more devs to port to Steam.

I have only managed to find one so far - on Stage 2 after you destroy the generator thing that produces a ton of regular pigs after it's destroyed.

The red pig peek up on the plateau on the right - I noticed I couldn't pick him up, so I hovered over him and my XP meter kept filling up. Still haven't nailed down what makes him appear though... he's a sneaky pig.

haha I know what danmaku is I just didn't know what touhou was.

Given how difficult it is to emulate it properly and the fact that it belongs to Konami, I know already that I won't get my #1 most wanted game from Treasure on Steam: Gradius V.

Think how good an HD port of GV would look :O''

I own Ikaruga on DC and 360 already (sold my NGC copy) but I'll support them quadruple dipping just because.
Wish it'd come out on iOS the most, I know it's on Android (never played it tho)

There is, and people use it to lock the machines to Blazblue usually. ;P
I've never seen a shooter-centric arcade using it, as in general people will still play even some of the more minor NESiCA titles like Exception, Strania etc. so they want to leave that choice in.
I'm not sure what setting vertical NESiCA cabs are on, because obviously only games with tate screen settings would be able to be played there.

Anyways there are really very few arcades where there are 1P and/or tate NESiCAs set up. Of the ones in Tokyo I know, maybe 4 or 5...? Of course there are folks playing in many arcades besides these, but then they run up against the aforementioned problem where they can't get on a machine.

It really is a win-win for the devs and I hope they see it that way. Also most likely the Xbox One is probably going to be just as much an "overseas" market this gen, so I could see some devs taking their 360 dev experience and applying that to make XBLA games next gen. Both Steam and Xbox One could be a way to "divide" the market, i.e. release arcade games domestically, release budget price versions for primarily overseas users.

We'll see...

Incidentally, CJ, you ever seen this?

Saw it on superplayer YOS.K's twitter the other day...apparently a set of Shikigami no Shiro cards (54 in all) he won in a scoring contest back in the day.

It's a great game, period. My favorite in the series. It's a great one to start with.
It is. The game has a great balance. It's very approachable for starters to the genre or the franchise. But also has a lot of difficulty and depth for people are good. Even giving "Last Word" bonus challenges for those who like to try.

A lot of people recommend Embodiment of Scarlet Devil for beginnings, because it was early in the franchise, I suppose. But I find Imperishable Night a much better entry to start with.

Imperishable Night and Mountain of Faith are personally the two games I recommend most to newcomers to Touhou.

Danmaku Unlimited 2 is such a good game. I can't believe it was done by 1 guy only, with exception of the soundtrack of course.

My god...what I would do for those. Wish the Roger Sasuke card was shown...hope he's in that set.

The eXceed collection is on sale on Steam right now and I was wondering if anyone had played them and could offer up their opinions on them. Are they worth 5$ for the three games?

I did pick it up last Steam sale. I don't like them. I admit I never got very far in any one of the games, but that's because I didn't feel the need to. They seemed wholly lackluster. The bullet patters were boring, and the enemies took too many shots to die. The first level boss in one of those games has like 8 lifebars. I feel they suffer the most common fault of doujin software, they're trying to be too h4rdc0re, and playability suffers. But hey, it's $5.

Thanks for the info. I might pull the trigger just for a shmup fix until some more get greenlit on steam.

So hope someone can clear something up for me:
Would Psikyo's Shoot'em-ups from the 90s count as Bullet Hell or not? I'm leaning towards the latter, but just want to be sure.

Furthermore as someone who liked Gunbird, which is more closer to it- Shienryu or Sonic Wings Special?

First, no. Borderline answer tho.
Second: Sonic Wings Special, although Sonic Wings 2 (Aero Fighters 2) is much better IMO. Still, both are better than SW3.

I ain't no expert, but I would not call Psikyo games bullet-hell.

And Sonic Wings Special is probably closer to Gunbird than Shienryu. Shienryu I always thought felt more like Raiden.

Yeah, R-Type Leo is an awesome game. It feels way different from other games in the series. It's really an R-Type game in name only. I do like the original R-Type and Delta a bit more though.

How is Armed Seven?

It's very cool. It's obviously inspired by games like Cybernator (Assault Suits Valken), and Assault Suit Leynos, and retains that giant-robot-flying-and-blowing-stuff-up feel. It's been a while since I last played it, but I'm pretty sure it's all air based, with no stomping around, just flying and shooting.

Was hoping you'd say that. Is this new Nyu Media version an update? I have zero interest in the games in the doujin bundle (I already have Satazius and Kamui) so I guess I will wait for the official launch.

If you're a fan of shmups and dont own any of the following you should hit up The Groupees Build a Doujin Bundle

Choose any combination of the following and get the eXceed 2nd Vampire Rex sdtk as a bonus.

  • eXceed2nd Vampire Rex
  • eXceed3rd Jade Penetrate Black Package
  • Hellsinker
  • Kamui
  • Armed Seven
It also has the following non shmups to choose from and add as well if you are interested.
  • Hatoful Boyfriend
  • Higurashi When They Cry

...also if they sell 2500 bundles they will throw in for free to everyone "Princess'Edge:Dragonstone" which is a pretty decent beat em up.

Go for it guys. like $2 or something nets you 5 really friggin' good shmups.

Trust me, I tried. Even though I don't use Steam, a PC, or have ever gamed on a PC. Set up a Steam account, registered my name but was hit with the below. Sorry. Wanted to show some support:

PM me and I'll send you an extra Satazius key I got in a bundle, it'll upgrade your account

I just picked up the Indie Gala October bundle recently.

Some Shmup goodness to be had there. Ether Vapor Remaster, Satazius, and RefleX.

I am some how hoping the last two games yet to be revealed happens to be Alltynex 2nd or even the 2nd or 3rd Exceed game.

On the subject of doujin shmups.

Anyone ever play Blue Wish Resurrection or Crimzon Clover?

Blue Wish Resurrection is awesome Cave inspired Shmup (It's Freeware too)
Crimzon Clover was released during the 79th Comiket and is just an amazing game that reminds me a lot like DDP mixed with GigaWing. It was recently released for Arcades, but if you can track down the PC release I highly recommend it. Definitely worth the purchase.

Edit: If anyone wants to check out Blue Wish Resurrection, here is the developers website - http://www004.upp.so-net.ne.jp/x_xgameroom/Works/works.html

Eden's Aegis is also nice shoot'em up if you want to check out. Just letting you know that these aren't demos. The dev released these as games as full freeware releases. Enjoy!

Oh cool. Those X_XGameRoom games look neat as hell. I'll definitely check them out. Thanks for the link.

This guy is a pretty good pixel artist:

I tried the demo for Crimzon Clover and bought the full version a few days later. It's definitely a must-have for any shooter fan. It's brilliantly designed, and it sounds like the new arcade version has an exclusive mode that's even better than the PC version. Yotubane is someone I will keep my eye on from now on.

My man. :D

Yeah one of my first score attack games was Eden's Aegis. I absolutely love its bullet cancel mechanic. From what folks tell me it bears similarity to Espgaluda's system and as such I fully intend on nabbing that Cave title sometime. I also got Blue Wish which is a less cute em up thing they did that is also pretty good. Anything they've made is really worth picking up and I highly recommend their work.

Crimzon Clover is what replaced my Akai Katana obsession. Holy balls is that game unforgiving but addictive. Double Break Mode chasing is one of the most satisfying things I've ever ran across and the fact that EVERYTHING has to be earned by your points including lives and training levels makes it a really big obsession to get into. Hard as hell bosses make it a blast. Still getting wrecked by the spider boss in level 2 honestly and thats after practice. The game is really tough, but it somehow manages to be one of the harshest games I've ever played while also being one of the most fun.

I dream of the day the Nessica version of it with the extra ship and modes comes out for PC.
