Is nothing ever good enough visually for some of GAF anymore?

I feel like I'm the odd man out sometimes when I'm being continually impressed by the visuals of Ryse, Killzone SF, NBA 2K14, and yet when I enter those threads all I see is bitching and complaining about the most minuscule things.

Just today I saw people complaining for over a page about sharp elbows or a slight quirk in a facial animation. It's like who the fuck cares? I just feel like these studios don't often get the respect they deserve for tremendous amount of talent that is displayed and yet some armchair general devoid of any artistic talent, has to nitpick every little detail to death. Sometimes I feel like people don't realize the blood, sweat and tears that go into these games. (Speaking as someone with friends in the industry).

I don't have a problem with general criticism of art direction or something like that, but when I see someone come into the NBA 2K14 thread and just say "meh whatever", I'd like to know what sports games they have been playing that look better.

My overall feeling is that this forum has gotten too overly cynical as of late and very little will ever please anyone anymore. Lighten up and just and enjoy the games. There are more important things in life than quibbling about screen tearing for 10 pages on end. It's just not fun to be around. I realize that part of this is the immaturity of some fanboy members needing to downplay other console's exclusives, but just fucking knock it off already. There are some standout games visually for every system.

I also realize this is not everyone on NeoGAF, and I thank those members for being reasonable. Sorry for the overly long rant but this has been bothering me about this forum for the past few months with next-gen approaching.

Visually all that really bothers me is tearing and framerate. Everything else is gravy. Sloppy, delicious gravy.

you want to change something that cannot be changed

besides, I'm perfectly fine with these great visuals, but being impressed is another thing, since I got a pc that can and will do better than that and without the console-bound usual issues that these games still have

I'm the type o' dude who thought the PS2/XBox/GC era of graphics was good enough.

So yeah, no reason for me to be impressed with these later generations.

I'm with you until you mentioned the screen tearing. Next gen performance woes are gonna be bitched about for sure. And the more the better! Fix those games. A little is okay...I guess...

No way NBA looks like that! Surely that's just a special replay mode, is there gameplay footage yet? ...maybe... wow!

It's hard to be impressed by Ryse because the game part looks so unbelievably awful and a bad way to start off a new generation of video games. Yeah the graphics are impressive but why am I supposed to care if there's nothing else there?

I do agree nitpicking over an elbow or whatever mess was going on in that other thread is plain sad though. That's the kind of stuff that makes even the saddest people say "get a life".

edit: God damn I can't get enough of those NBA gifs. I'm just skeptical it'll actually look like that during normal play and not just in replay mode.

When the devs are charging $60 for a game.. I want them to give the best. I dont complain about graphics when it comes to Indie games.

$60: Top shelf games. With good story, nice graphics and enough meat. GTA5, Last of US
$10-$15: Small games. Some thing has to be unique. It can be graphics or art, story, some new concept etc
$30: Games like Ratchet, Sly4 are great value at this price. They dont have top tier graphics, but amazing value for that money.

No one is forcing devs to charge $60.

I think a lot of nitpicks is just console war shit flinging. Launch titles are always a mixed bag but already looking how these do is going to lead to crazy looking stuff this gen.

This forum will shit on anything and suck the enjoyment out of your life. Tread with caution.

Can we still rag on lazy half-assed efforts from Electronic Arts? Is that still allowed?

Yeah, that's allowed. :)

Haha, you joke but sometimes I really feel that way. I love this place, but just the other day I saw someone pooping on something as joyful and happiness filled as Viva Piñata. Do you have no soul?

I'm still impressed by PS3 graphics haha. I feel like an old fogey around these parts sometimes. As long as I can tell what's going on on the screen I'm fine

Man, you must be fairly new to GAF if you think it just got cynical.

Welcome to 2000, duder.

Those graphics are not impressive from a PC gamer's point of view, especially since they don't all run at 60fps.

But they're launch games, I think I'll be impressed once we get to mid-late gen. Unless they're still 30 fps.

Wha... what? Not sure who this dude is but he seems like a cool guy.

EDIT: As for my comment, it seems as though a lot of people will buy games just because of eye candy. I've been hearing a ton of "Battlefield 4 at 720p? No buy" or "KZ:SF looks amazing that trailer was so pretty buying it!" type comments and it seems that some don't focus on the gameplay. I don't care if BF4 will be 720p because the game is so damn fun it doesn't matter to me. Graphics are just icing on the cake.

Beyond two souls doesn't get any flack for its graphics.

Amen.

Prepare yourself...

Honestly couldn't give two shits about graphics anymore, haven't been impressed by a game since like Gears of War 1 in 2006.

TF2 looks better to me than most of the stuff coming out these days. It's all about the art and your game not being terrible.

Im playing mgs2 hd right now that shit looks awesome! Generally I don't care about realism so you won't see me complaining about badly modeled wrinkles or whatever, I hate to sound like a broken record but a good artstyle is the only graphical achievement I can appriciate. I suppose the evolution of graphics will only improve that in the future but I can't say im impressed by any of the games you listed in that regard. I suppose almost objectively the games you listed look better than most and the character models are very detailed/well done but its really not something I care about.

I dunno, I've only heard good feedback about the graphics in games like Gone Home and Outlast.

With a new generation come higher expectations, it's normal. That said, people used to 2013 PC graphics might be disappointed by what they're seeing from these new machines, so that's one explanation for the harsher than usual reception, I guess.

I also don't care at if a game is 60fps unless it's a genre that truly benefits from it like fighting/certain FPS/racing/fast paced action games.

Because its easy to compare visual things, and we are gaming enthusiasts posting across national barriers. (/many of us really can't just get enough of graphics discussion)

All four games are impressive from my primarily PC gamer's point of view. Ryse and Killzone look more technically advanced than most PC games, although of course this isn't taking into account IQ and framerate which would be better on the platform. The only games that come close are Arma III(scale and lighting), Crysis 3, and Metro: Last Light. PC ports in recent years of console games have looked much, much better than current gen versions but I don't think there's really been the same kind of leap that you see in those first two gifs.

And 3D World looks wonderful and charming, can't wait to play it.

A lot of people worship technology (beyond merely appreciating it) and you won't change that. Some people are in it to have their eyeballs tickled before anything else. The thing is, there's nothing wrong with that by itself.

I do think it gets ridiculous though when the people who claim to worship tech don't really understand it. For example, obsessing over a flaw only because it's easily visible without getting why it is there. Like a technical limitation of current technology, the engine being used. game design, etc. This is where screenshot wars are born. Everybody gets together to rage about why a game with reasonable visual limitations doesn't look like a bullshot - and they're unaware of what the game looks like in motion. When much of what makes a game's visuals come together isn't visible in a single frame. Something truer than ever in the age of shader technology and increasingly advanced lighting, shadow, and atmospheric effects.
