Scouts from all over the Southwest frequently camp here, playing amongst the goblins. One ranger indicated visitors love to walk amongst the formations during full moons — and to play moonlit laser tag in the valley.

I'm saying that literally nothing is going to happen from those rocks being knocked over other then the fact that the rocks are in a slightly different position then they were 200 millon years ago, much like almost every other rock in the history of rocks. Yet some people want these guys to go to jail, or are saying they should die.

No, you're still clogging up a geyser, which is completely different then moving a rock a couple feet. Nothing in nature gets fucked up by these rocks moving a little. The only reason people are mad is because these were really old rocks that never moved and now they are moved, much like almost ever other rock in history.

Except it's not. A good equivalence would be moving any rock from one side of your yard to the other. Nothing in nature gets hurt from these rocks falling over, the only reason people are mad is because these rocks were really good at not falling over and now they're not upright anymore. I'm not even saying the guys should have done it, but the outrage of some rocks being slightly different then they were yesterday is ridiculous.

Environmentally? Absolutely nothing. It doesn't matter what formation the rocks are in, the only reason people care that they're sitting the way they are is because they've been like that for so long. The rocks aren't doing anything in the position they're in that they couldn't be doing completely spread across the ground in an environmental sense.

But then again, environmentally speaking, who knows what sort of microclimate has established in that valley as a result of the current configuration, and what sort of (presumably micro) organisms depend on it.

I consider environments in their natural state to be inherently valuable. Do you? So from my perspective, any man-made change reduces the value of that area.

I'm not going to say they should be jailed or heavily punished like some are advocating in this thread, but you won't see me trying to claim that what they did wasn't wrong.

The reason that these rocks are special is because of their formation. A formation that I assume is unique to this area, or is at least very rare throughout the world. By toppling one over, it no longer has the formation that made it unique. You can't compare it to ordinary rocks and their ordinary formations that occur in abundance all over the world. Do you not see that these rock formations are unique?

I however don't think they should go to jail/prison, but a punitive fine should be in order.
