How can Microsoft still justify $499?

It's getting close to launch and as games are wrapping up its become clear that unless the pxone is hard to program for, the ps4 does indeed have more brute force. 720p vs 1080p out the gate is pretty hard to swallow. I'd take 900p and call it close but come on MS.

So if the one were kinect less that would shave off 150 maybe? So why are they trying to pass the box off as something it isn't worth? They'll already be getting live monies from those who decide to jump ahead, they've already botched everything and sullied the Xbox brand, why not just suck it up already and cut the price? Leave kinect in for the life of the system instead of thinking about separating the two and just admit you screwed up just about everything. Even the price. BE A MAN MICROSOFT.

because masses won't give much a shit about 720 vs 1080 and that's where the majority of their money will come from

If you care about Kinect, you are getting it in the box and fully integrated with the system from the start.

Including a kinect with the system is like including a large hard drive in a PS3 out of the gate - making a specification like that standard means every developer can make something with it without worrying about targeting only a fraction of a fraction of owners who may have otherwise purchased the kinect seperately. this means more developers may include kinect features. make sense?

they should drop the price anyway

In my view it's one reason why Microsoft has been pushing The Infinite Power of the Cloud so damn hard. It's not just a randomly chosen buzz phrase. Xbox One is stuck with a high price and some things not everyone will want (Kinect).

The magic cloud hyperbole has been made to sound as if the system has a special technology that is utterly incomparable to anything else. Trying to get that mystique going.

The vocal majority doesn't care about resolution. It'll look pretty on their fancy TVs either way. Only enthusiasts care about it. Think like a consumer. Which would have the higher value in the consumer's eye. the $400 console with one controller, or the $500 console with one controller and a camera. Add the bundles in, but the Xbone will more likely be the better seller because the masses are that brain dead into thinking "that camera separates it from the PS4", making it the better console.

In the CONSUMERS eyes. Not the enthusiasts.

But that's the kind of thing that will gain a lot of traction on sites like IGN, Gamespot, Kotaku etc. - where a lot of casual gamers end up researching their potential purchases.

You're right that's probably why the Wii tanked this gen

Forza + Possibility to run Metro apps? It still has a strong case going for it in my opinion (although that's wavering).

if it sells well, then it's "justified". If it doesn't, it's not.

There's not really any objective way to judging whether a product is worth the money, until it's actually out, real consumers can use it, and we see how it sells.

There were folks that thought charging $250 for what looked like 2002-level graphics hardware was completely silly. Then the system came out and huge amounts of people thought $250 was worth it to swing a remote control to bowl and play tennis.

There were folks that thought $499 for a giant phone was completely dumb. Then that came out and it sold like crazy.

I don't know if a $499 Xbox One is gonna be "justified" to a lot of people, but I can't sit here and pretend like I definitively know the answer, or that it's somehow impossible for it to do well at that price.

I strongly doubt these sites had a significant impact on the majority of the X360's sales

Except that won't happen because of a camera this time. Microsoft would need a Kinect System Selling game to be able to do this, which would be some AAA game or perhaps just Xbox Fitness to pull it off. Consumers are dumb but not that dumb. Xbox One is not outselling the PS4 this holiday

I don't even know where to start with this....

Yes, I do. The console isn't even out yet and people are digging graves based on rumors and specs. Console launches are amazing.
