How can Microsoft still justify $499?

Good question.........if it was 400$ I would MAYBE consider getting one instead of a PS4(WAY WAY better launch games IMO) but at a whopping 100$ more for less powerful hardware and apps behind a paywall...........sorry I guess I am not the target audience for MS anymore and I have no clue who is.

Bravo on tanking your gaming future Microsoft, this is what happens when you turn over a successful division to lawyers, accountants and managers.

I would like to preface this by saying I have no particular allegiance to any company.

It irks me when people, especially Sony fanboys as of late, close their eyes to what's really going on around them. It's my duty to drop a duecer of knowledge-- a dose of reality, if you will--on you every once in a while. Or just Read the tea leaves, fellas.

The tiny minority picked the Wii, and you laughed. Another minority said the 360 might break 50 mil, and you ridiculed. Still yet, a whole lot of you argued that the psp/vita marked the doom of Nintendo and Sony would do raise the handheld market out of the ghetto. Sure. I believe you. Got any stock tips? And that's just a small taste.

Those who want to see the XB1 fail are like flies on the grill of Microsoft's fast-moving 'stang that's ever changing gears to get to where they want to go. All those moneyhats that you can't stand (DR3, Titanfall, COD DLC, etc.) is simply them doing whatever they need to do to position themselves as #1. All those 180's, all that pr head-spinning double-talk, all those pretty events and mountain dew promo's.... it all serves a purpose.

There will be no check too fat, no 180 too difficult that MS won't be willing to do to make sure XB1 is, at worst, relevant. Price-drops, 3-6 month exclusives, dlc exlcusives, bundles, kinect-less versions, payment plan versions... everything is on the table. "Do only as much as you must" is their motto. It's not what we want to hear, sure. We want a Titan-powered console on 30 watts for $199 with free online play. But we're only going to get what the market will bear. Blame the casuals. Blame Microsoft. Blame yourselves, even.

Just know, your voice does not matter in this "war". Sony, too, only does what it must. The inevitable is inevitable whether you're willing to accept it or not. Having a short-sighted view on things can only keep you happy for so long...

And we will lose. And in fact, we have already lost.

I once told a guy I worked with that the Wii version of Guitar Hero wasn't as good as the others because it had mono sound (I don't think I even mentioned it not being HD, because it's a music game).

He said something like "who gives a shit".

Half of future XB1 owners have Wal-Mart Visio TVs anyway. I don't think 720p will be an issue for them.

With that fitness app that nobody will use.

I think you're quite wrong here, the fitness thing will be a huge hit. Especially since it's paired with Beachbody (P90X, Insanity) and you get those programs (normally $100+) free for the first year.

With that fitness app that nobody will use.

I have been using Nike Fitness to help rehabilitate my knee after ALC replacement surgery. Sure I could just use a video, But the video isn't going to tell me to adjust my form or that I need to put my weight on my heels. Also with kids and a job, getting to a gym is out of the question.

Xbox One Fitness could be a killer app for the platform. If they combine it with things like Skype so you can work out with a friend, that would be major.

Kinect is how. Which honestly they need more than ever, because it's probably the most meaningful differentiator for the Xbox One at this point (whether you agree or disagree).

Which is why calls to sell a Kinectless Xbox One are kinda kooky to me.

100%. They need to make sure that thing is a home run because like you said it's probably the most meaningful differentiator between the two platforms.

If they dropped kinect they could drop the price to 349.

This argument is getting old already how many times are we going to visit this topic. How many threads are there going to be about 1080 vs. 720 and 499 vs. 399.

For me the $100 is not going to make the difference it all comes down to overall experience. Yes at this point it is pretty clear the PS4 has the graphic edge but that is not the only thing that makes a system. Microsoft is much better at doing online and multiplayer games and I don't think that is going to change. In my opinion Microsoft has the best exclusives and the best online service so I am getting the Xbox One day one.

Also MS is better at making controllers than Sony and I have yet to try either the Sony or MS one but the xbox controller looks better to me.

Am I disappointed that not all games will be 1080p day one on xbox yes but it is not a deal breaker.

they can because they can point to their opponents offering and point out it's nearly the same price once it's inferior camera offering is included. Include the free game over here and it is.

immediately they can differentiate the price to the consumer.

will it swing some buyers? maybe, maybe not.
That's assuming the consumer wants either camera and that MS will bundle a free game that they want or a game at all.

For me its the prospect of xna2.0 and kinect skeleton tracking might be cool to see if i can get some cheap motion capture stuff going on.

I really wish they were packing in a game in the states like they are in the UK. I don't really want Fifa but a free Forza would be amazing!!!!

Because MS has been so successful at throwing money at projects until they're relevant. Tell me, what is the most recent success MS has had with a consumer electronic product? Windows 8 flopped, Surface flopped, the Windows Phone isn't doing so hot... the Xbox 360 may be the most recent success for the company.

I don't understand why so many people think that the casual "Joe Gamer" has more console loyalty than a hardcore enthusiast. It seems like the almighty, self important, "hardcore gamer" of NeoGAF thinks that filthy casuals are so dumb that they will buy whatever the next Xbox is because that's what they have now - even though this entirely dismisses the fact that most casual gamers owned a PS2 in the generation before. Console loyalty is always changing, and I see no scenario in which the most expensive console that requires a subscription to do anything will end up being the most popular choice.

For me, its UI, Kinect, and a history of online mp excellence. If those things aren't valued by you, the PS4 is the better option currently. I also think mp exclusives have been better on Xbox than PlayStation.

What's really curious to me, is if we get a $500 steam box in 2 years that runs multiplats much better than PS4, the Xbox one is at least differentiated from that with its UI and Kinect, the PS4 is more exposed from that type of competition IMO. If its all about having the most powerful console for today's "hardcor" PS4 crowd, do they stay? The release cycle for MS and Sony is 7 years, the release cycle for a steambox could be 7 months.

I also have doubt's about the console market in general without a blu-ray/dvd format introduction that came with the past 2 generations. With cross plats being prevalent for the forseeable future, Sony especially and MS to a lesser extent don't offer many compelling reasons to upgrade beyond "graphics". This scares me for both.

Kinect & media stuff (NFL, HBO Go).

I know that's NOT what gamers want to hear, but It's the only thing they have that Sony can't do equally or better.

And it's really strange that Kinect stuff is not beeing shown to the public (aside from the voice comands).

And what exactly makes MS' online so much better on X1 than Ps4. Heck outside of features like Party chat (which the Ps4 will have) PSN MP is pretty identical nowadays. PS+ is a better all around deal so what exactly is going to make XBL so much better?

As for the UI, have you seen the Ps4 videos? Its fast and works perfectly, how the heck is it inferior to MS?

Graphics have always been a main reason for upgrading, it's not an issue. I'd be more worried about MS' pretty terrible first part record.

I guess I don't understand why this is so obscene. Without kinect it would probably be 399. Kinect hopefully for gamers turns out to have more support. Some people outside of these forums don't understand that Kinect got a lot of play at houses. I don't think Microsoft should have forced it but I think without forcing it kinect would drift off into obscurity. Sadly, it probably will anyways.

This is EXACTLY how I feel. I was there for Xbox launch, camped out for a 360, have subscribed to LIVE the whole time and just feel like what are you guys doing? Actually I've pretty much felt that way the last few years about MS holding firm on the 360s price along with them catering to the tickle me Elmo crowd. They've lost focus and its awful. Playing moto GP on LIVE was amazing. That Microsoft is dead and gone.

comes with a kinect in the box... that's the 100 dollar difference.

kind of obvious when you look at what each system comes with out of the box :/

In 2 years PS4 will be $299 or less.......a $500 Steambox wont' be a threat.
Both Xbox One and PS4 offer more than just more power and better graphics.....faster UI/better apps/better online/more connected.....these are things both consoles will offer next-gen.

Kinect IMO isn't a selling point for Xbox One considering many already got it for Xbox 360.

I like this post.

If Xbone can actually replace my cable box (as I believe they claimed, haven't been paying too much attention), then it is indeed worth $500.

It is what they think they can get for it. If the market doesn't think it is worth the price, it will drop, just like when the first XB price dropped.

PS3/360 could have done 1080p/60fps and if people were clamoring for it, developers would have provided it. So yeah...ANY system, including X1, is capable of that resolution. The only question is, how many bells and whistles can they turn on at the same time?

If they dropped kinect they could drop the price to 349.

Sure, aaaaaand then they'd be the Less-Than, Not Quite console this gen. Which I doubt any price point can make sexy.

Wii U has first party and their input devices. PS4 will have the best multiplats and the beefiest specs. And then there's the Xbox One: nothing really standing out about it, unless you add Kinect to the mix.

My Wife and I going to use the crap out of it. It was part of the sell to the wife in buying a $500 gaming machine when I just bought a tablet =D

Wow, even though it requires the 2nd subscription on top of XBLG after the first year? enjoy it, I suppose.

Due to the "average consumer" being this dumb beast that while constantly connected to the internet and can find out anything about anything in five seconds they dont seem to care about anything and no issue bothers them. No price is too high or quality too low. As long as they are advertised to using catchy slogans like "Beta Tested in the Future" and spun around like tops with PR terms like "Balance" they will be oblivious to all shortcomings of a product that launches within weeks of a competing product that for the most part has better specifications and is cheaper. Well at least that is one narrative.

Dupe of 1800 other identical "Is the Xbox One doomed to failure?" threads. Let's try to wait a little while before having any more. There's no new information being added to the discussion at this point.
