New gameplay screenshots of The Order 1886

I'm not entirely sure you can really judge gameplay based on a handful of screenshots.

Extensively? No. However, with the info that's been released joined with various screenshots, I can make a few impressions off of that alone.

I can already tell the game is TPS with some standard mechanics in play, which is my main gripe since I would rather see RAD do something new instead of making a game in a genre that's rather over-saturated right now.

Yup, looks just like The Last of Us.

You know what this game needs, gameplay-wise? Mystery. It's got such a Victorian mystery vibe. It would be so great if there would be some element of investigating a mystery and following clues to go with the action. That would set it apart from Uncharted-style third-person adventure/shooting.

That's what I am hoping for. If they just go strictly the shooter route it would a total waste of the time period and visual/design. These screenshost definitely suggest the game has mystery and a lot of atmosphere.

No it does not because it's pretty silly to compare an unfinished project with TLoU.

Pretty sure once 1886 is done it will destroy The Last of Us graphics wise.

but let's not go there again...

Guess you missed yesterdays onslaught of TLoU vs 1886 screen caps.

Game Informer did say there are times when you investigate crime scenes and do other things besides just shooting.

a good game is a good game.

hopefully this will be a good game.

"While the focus is on third-person gunplay combat, The Order sometimes pulls back for slower paced moments of investigation and exploration."

:)

grain filter actually looks kind of nice here

I think the chromatic aberration looks kind of overdone, I'm sure they'll tweak it and it might look better in motion than screenshots.

And some plot twist. Like somehow the order actually run by some corrupted knight,
killing those super nature creature because they believe human is the only master race.
Super nature creature actually super friendly and cute like unicorn.

These are the more interesting game play details
Everything in the world is rendered with soft body physics
When a surprise enemy attacks, a more complicated melee system described as a "unique variation on the familiar quick-time event" is shown

Galahad's experience allows him to predict how different actions play out, so players can move the camera to different objects and interaction points to dictate how the character engages his enemy

"While the focus is on third-person gunplay combat, The Order sometimes pulls back for slower paced moments of investigation and exploration."
Interactive cutscenes keep players in control of part of the action (like shooting) while a preset dramatic moment plays out.
Examples of guns: Arc Gun like you saw in the trailer, Combo Gun has two different settings, you can blow enemies back with a non-lethal charge to make space as well as using standard rifle fire, Thermite Rifle can shoot a chemical onto enemies, using secondary fire to shoot flares to light them on fire, frag grenades can be used typically or hoisted onto the environment via spikes
During battles Black Water is used when the odds are stacked against them, although it can be used to regenerate health, "anything that would mortally wound and kill a person" will still kill one of the knights

character models are great, but other than that there's nothing especially spectacular about those screens.

Comparisons with TLoU don't even make sense though.

Wonder if the player blew open the hole in that wall. :o

The fire effect seems to be the same as in the February vid. I really hope that they change that, because the sparks look sooo good while the actual fire is iffy.

Man, I want to mow down people with that gun already.

The mainly brown art of the ramshackle houses reminds me of Resi4's village section. That mixed with TLoU like cramped interiors and maybe some Uncharted-like vistas...hngh.

I like the style. Finally some character. But people are really impressed by the tech? Looks like a standard duck´n´cover shooter for me.

The Call of Duty games are pretty solid titles. Doesn't mean I don't think there's an over-abundance of FPSs on the market though.

COD games are just sequels these days theres no new story or mechanics. the Order is a new ip so theres going to be alot more going for it.

I dunno about TPS being oversaturated as a genre.

But anyway, Sony put all their big studios on completely different genres and that's probably a wise choice. The only other thing RAD could have reasonably done is a platformer, but there's Knack already. The TPS genre wasn't covered by anyone. I mean I guess ND might still stay in this direction, but their game probably won't come out till late next year at the very earliest.

The COD campaigns always feature a new story and new gameplay mechanics, like with the dog in Ghosts. And sure, having a new IP does give the developers a blank slate as far as the story and style goes, if the gameplay falls under traditional tropes then I'm certainly less excited for the game than if they would have done something more innovated and original.

indoors, planks of wood on the windows, lots of dust in the air. That's all I've got.

Didn't have the game on my radar until now, because as someone else said, this game is giving me Resident Evil 4 vibes. I'm not saying it'll be a survival horror (which genre is it btw?), but the look of the environments is enough for me to be interested.

are you really saying the dog in ghosts is innovative? really?

Im not trying to argue with you, im just saying that its really early to have that big of a stance on the order when we havnt even seen real gameplay.

Character models are really awesome, i like the shader on the pants of the guy on the right. Its quite accurate.

CA and grain filter though is really hurting their IQ, they should decrease those substantially.

I'm actually really excited for screens like this:

I can tell we're going to get some nice sequences of walking through the towns and exploring a bit. Not a huge open area, but I'm definitely thinking we'll see scenes like this.

I really hope so. I love it when a game has a city breathing with life. My favorite part of Bioshock Infinite was walking around Columbia at the beginning and get a slice of life there with all the people around, then they all sort of vanish after that. I really hope The Order maintains an alive city throughout.
