[O]ur first impression is that it's an iterative change from last year — but sometimes that's all it takes to make a great product. The same 7.9-inch display now features four times the pixels, a full 2048 x 1536 resolution, which makes text sharp and readable. Just as importantly, it makes iOS 7 look much better than it does on the original iPad mini, which often feels a little out of place on lower resolutions. iOS 7 also benefits from the iPad mini's new 64-bit A7 processor, making scrolling and everything else notably faster and smoother. As with the iPhone 5S, though, some of that speed feels throttled by Apple's decision to make you wait for overly-long transition animations when moving between folders and apps.

The new tablet feels exactly like the first generation iPad Mini. This is a good thing since the first Mini has a near perfect feel. However, while it feels great, it's all about that screen. And given the Mini's smaller 7.9-inch size, looks even sharper than the full-size iPad Air. However, to take advantage of the new pixel-dense screen, you will be paying up over last year's Mini. It's gorgeous however, so I'd imagine the new premium will definitely be worth it to some. Apple says the new iPad Mini is four times faster than last year's model and has eight times the graphics performance, while still provided a purported 10 hours of battery life. While that's good and all, the first generation iPad Mini isn't exactly a performance monster, especially in the gaming department.

TechCrunch
The eye-boggling 2048 x 1536 screen looks excellent in person, and for anyone coming from a generation one device it’s going to be a dramatic change. The iPad mini itself is very slightly thicker and heavier than its predecessor to accommodate the Retina Display with the same battery life, adding 0.01 inches and 0.05 pounds to the specs of the original, but that makes minimal difference to the actual feel of the product in the hand.

ArsTechnica
[N]on-Retina displays are showing their age these days. The Retina mini fixes this completely with its 2048×1536 7.9-inch display. Putting the same resolution in a smaller screen makes for an even sharper display than the iPad Air, and iOS 7's thin fonts look excellent on the new screen. It looks and feels like the same tablet as last year, though it is very slightly thicker and heavier than it was last year: it weighs 0.73 pounds instead of 0.68 and is 0.29 inches thick instead of 0.28. The difference isn't enough to make the new mini incompatible with accessories for the old one, nor is it easy to tell the difference when you're actually holding the tablet in your hands, but it is there.

I really would like to go with Mini but on long run I'm not sure if it's big enough for me. I guess I could keep my Ipad 2 as secondary device, since there is actually nothing wrong with it.

Was going to bite on a retina mini if the price was right but I can't justify 400$ for something that is going to get used less than my phone and chromebook.

Still think this will sell an insane amount despite the price.

I was originally going to buy the new iPad mini but the price increase brings it really close to the iPad Air.

Decisions decisions

I'm still using my iPad 1. GIF threads on GAF crash it regularly =*(
I'm bit ahead of you, but I still have the same problem. Not to mention my tabs just stop loading for no reason and do nothing until I delete my cache. I need new Ipad :(

This might become my favorite Apple device ever. I already love the formfactor, bring on the retinas and the A7 performancez.

I was hyped for this but with the iPad Mini being kept on the market, and the fact I just got mine back in late March/April this year, I'm going to hold off until next year. Also I'm going to wager next year will have the fingerprint sensor that the 5S has too.

Holy shit those are expensive lol. Wish I had use for a tablet though.

I said that too since the inception of the iPad, but I got a Mini earlier this Spring and I haven't looked back. Unless I'm playing games on Windows, I don't use my PC anymore really.

this or air.... so hard to decide.

my mini1 is fantastic and for me is the ideal tablet size and shape and weight... but i want my hands on that air.

will do some recon work next week for sure.

I would really like one of these things but the price is so fucking ridiculous, especially with the Nexus 7 being under $250.

I was thinking that myself. Wasn't the whole point of the Mini to be cheaper than the bigger iPads?

I was hoping for a same day release as the Air. Hearing "later in November" didn't give me good feels.

Will probably end up getting the Air, but love the build on these.

I'm glad this was announced when it was, because I was going to get an original iPad Mini for my wife for Christmas and I'd much rather get her the more powerful one.

I got her the original iPad as her push present when our son was born three years ago, and two months later the iPad 2 was announced. Now she can't really do anything on her iPad - apps keep crashing and she can't even run most newer programs because it hasn't supported firmware updates in over a year.

I was waiting for the retina mini. Replacing my iPad 2 with it sometime when I can secure the cash. Maybe after christmas.

Pleasantly surprised the 64bit stuff made it to the mini. Didn't expect that until the next model.

Personally, it's hard for me to justify a purchase. My GF has an iPad Mini (original) and it's a great device. Couple this with PS4, Christmas etc. I think If I wanted another tablet I'd opt for something Android now, to give it a whirl.

But there is no doubt about it, it looks to be a stunning device.

I'm torn on this. I made the jump to mini because I realized I much preferred the Mini over the regular iPad. It just fits better in my hands, and made for a much more enjoyable experience. But one of the reasons I felt that way was because the weight of the iPad 3. Now that iPad air has cut out the weight I'm wondering if I should go back to it, or stay with a Mini Retina. What is making me lean towards the Mini again is just the dimensions. Because even if they cut out the weight of the air, it doesn't change the fact that it's not as easy to hold in my hands.

I dunno. Going back and forth on it. Retina would definitely be nice on my Mini regardless. So I'll be upgrading with one of these. I'm just bummed at the price increase. That's another reason I'm thinking...just go with the Air.

This is exactly what I wanted: a Mini with comparable specs to a current-gen standard iPad. I'll definitely be getting one in the next couple months, I like the 7-8 inch form factor for tablets better than 10 inches.

How's that screen, though? And isn't the nexus all plastic?

You can buy a toyota and a ferarri. Both get you from A to B but you'll get a lot more dick in a Ferrari.

I'm drowning in dick after I got an iPad, thanks Apple

the Nexus 7 screen is really good and the construction feels better than the previous N7

I really hope to get on of these things. Apparently they're going to be in very short supply till January.

I'm excited for this to come out. I have the original mini which I bought at the beginning of the year. I can't go anywhere without it, I love the small size of it compared to the larger iPad. So, even though it might be better to get the larger one due to the price hike, I just prefer the smaller size of the mini. The 128GB is also more reason for me to be excited. 64 goes quickly when you start adding movies!
This will be day 1 for me, space grey come to mama!

The screen on the new Nexus 7 is comparable to an iPad mini retina screen both in terms of color accuracy and pixel density.

For anyone on the fence between the mini and the Air in the US, Walmart is selling the Air for $475. Should be a pretty clear decision for most especially with the significant weight reduction in the air.

i've been begging for over 5 years.
I was sorta tempted until I scrolled down and looked at the price. Would've been my first proper iOS device. I have a gen 2 iPod touch but that doesn't count because virtually nothing works for it anymore from the app store.
