Bullshit :(
No DLNA support, either.

What?! Really? Hooooly smokes. That Sony arrogance coming back into full swing before the generation even starts. At this rate the Wii U will be giving them a run for their money by Christmas.

I honestly did not expect custom soundtracks outside of what a developer built into their game but no DLNA is some serious fuckery. Some times I'm in the middle of a gaming session and take a break to eat or something and being able to throw on some of my own music or watch a couple episodes or a movie from the over 20TB of data on my media server and then jumping back into a game was pretty convenient. Having to use Netflix or Youtube or any other web based app kinda limits my choice which is a step back from the PS3. Nevermind this Music Unlimited crap which I've conveniently ignored on the PS3. I'm betting if there is a Pandora app that you won't be able to use it for custom soundtracks either.

Is it just MP3? What about other music formats? I think its really strange that the PS4 doesnt support MP3. Not something that i used that much on the PS3, so not a huge deal for me, but still a strange decision. The Vita has full support for MP3 and custom soundtrack, so why not the PS4? I'm not going to subscribe to Music Unlimited at least.

How does this compare to WiiU and Xbox One by the way?

Disgusting if true.
The fucking Wii supported mp3
Every previous generation console (PS3/Xbox 360/Wii) supported MP3 i think. MP3 support was removed from the Wii later on though (it didnt affect current sold Wii consoles).

This, the lack of DLNA, and lack of support for generic BT headsets, is BS. Why can't the PS4 do what the PS3 could? Oh, Sony wants to make money? Ok.

The fact that their own Pulse Elite doesn't work at launch suggest "making money" is not the reason the feature is missing. At least not that one. Mp3s on the other hand...

People were expecting 12.5mm drives instead of 9mm. It isn't really a problem, just that people expected different

yes i know, but when i looked for large 12.5mm drives last week (for PS4), i couldnt find any... they were 9.5mm. There are also 15mm enterprise drives, not 12.5mm.

In any case, largest available 1.5TB 2.5" drive is 9.5mm, so this is not a problem at all.

DLNA on the other hand, is huge issue for me personally.

Microsoft really needs to put up a video showing how you play Mp3s on the Xbone.

If they can get their UI to hold up long enough to actually get it to work.

It would be hilariously amazing payback for E3, I'd love to see that.
"How to listen to your music on the Xbox One" vid incoming

I have never played music through my PS3. Plenty of other devices to do that on. Sound design is an important part of games for me, so I like to appreciate each for what it is.

I love custom soundtracks. When I get bored of GTA's music, I drop in a better mix. Same thing with RDR. Any open world game, really. Not to mention stuff like Skate, which begs for a custom soundtrack. I'm surprised at the number of folks who didn't use the feature.

This blows. Not sure why some are defending it. It'd be like making a car that couldn't support AC/Heat and you guys being like, "well you can still drive so who cares?" Media support has been standard on consoles for going on 20 years now (dating back to at least the Sega CD and probably any prior-CD based system). I and many others have gotten used to using it on a regular basis. I loved that I could come home, turn on the PS3/360 and any form of digital entertainment I wanted to enjoy was right there all on that one device and it was easy to swap between any medium just with the controller.

Sucks that all of that is gone now. If it wasn't for Quantic Dream and Final Fantasy being console only, I'd seriously consider finally fully plunging into just building a dedicated gaming PC that lived in my living room. The current gen consoles could compete well enough for that ultimate media experience but the next-gen seems to have wholly abandoned the idea.

All true except for the bold part. MP3/DLNA might be used by <10% of the console's users, whereas AC/heat are used by a majority.

This isn't a defense. This is a bullshit move... but not the same.

When it's integrated with the game it's incredible. Custom soundtracks aren't all playing Nickelback over a JRPG with in-game music turned all the way down.

Hahahaha so much for "Sony won't force paywalls"

Next gen is here.

Meanwhile I have 5 browser tabs, music and plenty of other programs running and I'm able to play games at the same time. I use a futuristic thing called PC.
This is one of the worst posts in a thread I've seen in a long time. The fuck is this shit, seriously.

In december last year, they were offering a years sub - which I took - for £11.99. £1 per month.

If they offer this again, I would recommend it, as it allows offline playback of your library on android devices, which is fantastic.

Funnily, I never use in PS3, but all the time on my phone.

Pretty cynical move, and they were really riding on the wave of consumer goodwill.

As for devs being able to tell people what they can and can't record?

F*** you - I have a HDCP stripper that disagrees.

As always companies like to test the waters on how far they can go with their greed before anyone stands up against them.Today you may not care about having to pay a subscription to listen at mp3s in your system but tomorrow they will go one step further and try to add another way to fuck up your consumer rights.
Everyone should make noise when stuff like this happen even if they are not directly affecting them.

Thank goodness I already have music unlimited. Comes in handy on iPhone when new albums come out as a cheep alternative to Spotify, or when listening to music via Vita.

Sucks that the PS4 requires it for music playback, I think people should at least be given a choice.

Strangely, I rarely buy music physical music or use MP3 anymore unless its an album unavailable in the streaming networks (like AMOK: Atoms for Peace, Flying Lotus: Before the Quiet etc etc...). I don't know many people who do.

If Sony doesn't change this or has plans of changing this, I will probably cancel my PS4 preorder because of this. The main reason I played racing games on 360 over PS3 was because of the ability to play my own music (mainly dj sets) while playing. I would rather have inferior hardware that gives me the ability to play my own music than be stuck with the music developers choose to put into their games (most of which I do not like).

Why cancel?

Buy it and then re-sell it for an extra $250!

Probably a little bit cheaper than a Sata III port.
Sorry, but I can't think of any camera that shoot in .MKV. And as 99.9% of the .MKV files is pirated I wouldn't hold my hopes up for the official MKV support.

mkv is popular because it supports ac3 audio and is open source and free

Pirates moved on to mp4 a long time ago, avi was the big container used at the launch of ps3 for pirating movies, was that blocked? no
It's an arbitrary thing and every single blu ray player, modern dvd player, smart tv etc can play mkv, they didn't add it because they just couldn't be fucked..

a bigger fuck you than mkv was not being able to use subtitles on ps3

If you're gona put your blu ray collection on your hard drive for streaming you're not gona use the raw mpeg 2 video or w/e that is like 15-20GB in size (unless you're one of those people with a NAS just for their collection)
Just like how people always stored their music as a compressed mp3

getting totally off topic here

Fuck you Sony. I give you my money and you give me no DLNA, paid music service for background streaming, no external hdd, AND unplayable MP3 files? This is why people shouldn't be fanboys. Companies are only out for your money.

Never used a console as an mp3 player, neither did I think others even used that feature. Seems like a minor issue that could be remedied in an update/patch or something.

If you're not going to support MP3 playback, you better damn well support native 1080p/60fps gaming.

900p is testing my patience, Sony.

Now I wonder what other BS they're going to tell us about...?

What a freaking BUZZKILL this "Next-Gen" has been - between the XB1 and the PS4 it's amazing they both haven't delayed their launches until 2015 and gone back to the drawing board from freaking SCRATCH.

Seriously they can't even do this =/
Can my child’s PS3 sub-account be changed to a master account on PS4 once they are past the age of 18?
Unfortunately, no. In this case, we would advise creating a new master account. We apologize for the inconvenience.

and this other one is disappointing too

Will users have the option of setting the frequency and timings of auto detection, download, and installs?
No.

Sorry, this service is not available in your country/region.

Well fuck that.
I love to have music on if I am not running a computer. PS3 to receiver, set it via TV and turn TV off. Voila, music. Good thing I have PS3 next to future PS4. Someday...debating vehemently now.

sounds like a nice design-by-committee feature thanks to Sony's music division. I'm sure it will be patch if there is too much huff about it. Can't say I've used the mp3 feature on my Xbox in the last 5 years though honestly.

Blah no DLNA support sigh :( I was hoping that they would for end users to use DIY features instead of their own ecosystem.

Im not really happy I can't merge my master and sub accounts together (I setup them so that the master account would be locked with my credit card to buy digital content and my sub account was setup for playing back in 2007)

I have that sub. Honestly even after getting it at that price I could barely recommend it. The browser service crashes or has log in problems. The Android app crashes or has log in problems, and then refuses to work. The sound quality is strange, even with the added HQ option from this year, something about it just doesn't sound right. Regardless of quality though, this shouldn't be forced.
