PS4 can't play MP3, Music Unlimited needed for background music [Up:Yoshida responds]

Amazing how many people value media playback more than they value next gen games.

it is sort of hilarious.

i hope the people who are outraged are people that actually used this feature more than once. i know that when i got my ps3 i "enabled" atrac/wma/mp4 whatever other shit you have to do in the PS3 console settings and never used that shit ever.

Sony obviously has some sort of data collection where probably at most 5% ever used the feature at all, but 50% activated it and Sony had to pay a licensing fee anyway.

This sounds like an epic misfire by Sony, sorta how Microsoft did a while back then reversed all of those stupid decisions after the backlash.

Of these new bits, which is Microsoft going down the same road on? Is that known? If they are on the same page then that may just be it.

I would hardly equate microsofts always online and the DRM reversal to not having MP3 Playback..... But thats just me.....

I don't care about MP3 playback but I'm curious: what about OSTs for games included in some special/extended versions, will they come with a custom player now? That would suck. I always transfer them to other devices.

yes i know, but when i looked for large 12.5mm drives last week (for PS4), i couldnt find any... they were 9.5mm. There are also 15mm enterprise drives, not 12.5mm.

In any case, largest available 1.5TB 2.5" drive is 9.5mm, so this is not a problem at all.

DLNA on the other hand, is huge issue for me personally.
Agree that it isn't really a problem. There are however a few SSDs and HDDs that are 10mm/12.5mm.
mkv is popular because it supports ac3 audio and is open source and free

Pirates moved on to mp4 a long time ago, avi was the big container used at the launch of ps3 for pirating movies, was that blocked? no
It's an arbitrary thing and every single blu ray player, modern dvd player, smart tv etc can play mkv, they didn't add it because they just couldn't be fucked..

a bigger fuck you than mkv was not being able to use subtitles on ps3

If you're gona put your blu ray collection on your hard drive for streaming you're not gona use the raw mpeg 2 video or w/e that is like 15-20GB in size (unless you're one of those people with a NAS just for their collection)
Just like how people always stored their music as a compressed mp3

getting totally off topic here
The big difference is that avi also housed a lot of legitimate content. As there were many cameras that could shoot video in .avi. I don't agree with consoles not supporting .MKV. I just see some of the reason why they aren't supporting it.

So do people finally realize that all these companies want to make money? Is the irrational love some of you have for these companies finally dead with the start of this gen?

This is pretty bullshit. Guessing they didn't wanna pay the licensing fee. It's a very Nintendo-esque move.

So, I'm guessing Sony's Music Unlimited service won't have stuff like music from Ace Attorney, Castlevania, Deadly Premonition and the NES Ninja Gaidens...

Cause that's what I like to listen to with custom soundtracks. :(

naw, it has a bunch of that stuff actually.

.....I couldn't find ac/dc though.

Custom soundtracks are stored in memory separately, and could simply not be added to the video recording mix.

Good to know this. That post was just a speculation on my end. The reason why they would botch the mp3 support could be anything, but mainly money and getting new console buyers to have and buy services that are under one company's wings.

This decision is fucking retarded. To allow background music but limit it to a streaming service barely anyone has is just an insult.
Lucky it's a feature I don't really use much, but I did usually enjoy loading up my own soundtrack when playing racing games...
Large step backwards from Sony.

The people cancelling their preorders over this are fucking pathetic.

"Sony's making a console for the gamers! that focuses on games!"
"preorders"
"OMG NO MP3 PLAYBACK???? EVERY DEVICE I OWN PLAYS MP3s I NEED THIS ONE TO PLAY MP3s AS WELL!!!!"
"Cancels preorder"

Temperamental, whiny babies, that look to bitch and complain at the slightest opportunity, and seek to turn every slight into a world ending catastrophe that requires a Che Guevara level sacrifice or struggle. No wonder game companies are chasing casuals, the hardcore of this thread are illustrating they are simply not worth the effort to appease. They get 99.9 percent of the system right, but that slight .01 is wrong so fuck the whole thing!

Having said that, fuck this decision, it's a clear effort to milk money out of playstation owners and support their middling Music Unlimited. I guess I'll listen to my iPad/iPhone/iPod if I want music during games - The things I would use if I wanted music anyway.

People are seriously trying to justify this? Even if you didn't use it, it's full stop stupid to think it's acceptable to remove features just because. Just because you didn't listen to custom soundtracks doesn't mean that others didn't. And it doesn't mean that it's not an important feature.

Amazing how many people value media playback more than they value next gen games.
Amazing how many people support removing features functional in previous consoles in the name of profit and greed.

No DLNA support is extremely weak. I don't want to have to switch inputs to watch a video from my tablet or laptop. I'm definitely going to wait for software maturation.

Meh, I frequently use my PS3 to play MP3s in my living room. Never cool when features are removed. Another reason for PS3 and PS4 to coexist.

9/10. Would laugh again.

As someone that's sitting this console generation out and sticking with PC, this still bothers me. It's like no matter how consumer friendly one of these devices becomes you still have to look at every nut and bolt to ensure that somewhere there isn't a gotcha waiting to leech onto your wallet. This is a very old-school Sony type of move.

Yep. Never used it and every single person I know who has a console has never used it. Granted, I am sure there are people in here who would use it and are genuinely upset, but not this many people, sorry.

All true except for the bold part. MP3/DLNA might be used by <10% of the console's users, whereas AC/heat are used by a majority.

This isn't a defense. This is a bullshit move... but not the same.

The same excuse (along with piracy concerns) was used by Sony to remove Linux from the PS3. The number of people who used it was not considered significant so they largely got away with it. May not be the same as putting rootkits in your cereal but it's still an awful practice.

In regards to PS4 not playing MP3s - why wouldn't consumers expect features from the previous console to carry over? Online, media playback and playing MP3s without being charged isn't an unreasonable expectation given the PS3 does it. Even if some people who don't use it - it remains a removal of a feature. You could say we don't need blu ray movie playback, a web browser or ability to store and view images.

To be honest. it's gotten to the point where I don't know who really cares and who has an agenda.

I pretty much write of most of the posts in a thread like this unless there is actually discussion going on.

Large step backwards Fromm Sony.

It would be a little less obnoxious if they allowed any music streaming service (Pandora/Spotify/Last.FM) to play in the background, but only a little. No DLNA means I'll spend more time on my XB1 (unless MS also removes their brain on this issue) because I regularly watch movies and listen to music via my consoles.

Its pretty insane when you think about everything that can play mp3's but this 400 dollar machine won't let you

I was just playing Gran Turismo 5 last night, doing time trials to custom music to wind down. So awesome. It makes a tremendous difference to my time with that game.

Removing that capability to try and push me into a subscription music service has sapped the wind from my sails.

I couldn't imagine playing Forza Horizon without it, among plenty of other games.

I agree. So many racing games have music that I just do not enjoy. The ability to play what I want to listen too really makes the experience that much better mainly for the racing genre. Not having the ability to listen to what I want to listen too has an effect on me to not play racing games.

I may think about one logical reasoning behind this...

PS4 can record clips from games. Custom mp3 aren't under Sony Music partner licences and thus could create some law fights with original music owners.

Could be.
Then Sony should allow it, but with a disclaimer saying that 'due to licensing issues, game recording is disabled whilst custom soundtracks are in use' or something... That's a fair compromise.

This needs to stop. We shouldn't cloud the situation by arguing against features just because you don't use them. I assure you MILLIONS do in fact use them. I stream using PMS daily and I LOVE playing SSX with my music that reacts in-game to what I'm doing. I also greatly miss Rhythm games that allow uses of your own music. I'd kill for an AudioSurf on PS4. We need to think outside ourselves for a minute. These aren't expensive features to implement and we can all benefit from them. It's a no-brainer!

QFT, if you don't care or could or couldn't care less about this feature going missing from PS3->PS4 then why the fuck are you in this thread?
For many people the media features of the PS3 were a selling features, especially ones as commonplace as DLNA and MP3.

I'm not saying they are the same, the Microsoft was obviously much worse. I'm just saying that it is yet another incredibly stupid move, that's all.

i don't think the people crying 'preorder canceled, argh!!!' at this news ever really had it preorderd, or are not being serious. LOL

I'm surprised they kept the majority of this secret for so long. I guess both companies had something to hide.

Yea, that was my outlook. While MS was making a fool of themselves I kept wondering, "Okay, people are hopping onto the Sony train, but when is that honeymoon going to be over?"

I don't know what impact this news will have, but it just goes to show that whether it's MS or Sony, they'll find a way to upset people by taking away some kind of basic functionality.

So do people finally realize that all these companies want to make money? Is the irrational love some of you have for these companies finally dead with the start of this gen?

I hear you. If Sony does not want to include MP3 functionality then give me the option of paying for that functionality.

This isn't a feature I have used on 360/PS3, so it doesn't really inconvenience me that the PS4 doesn't support it, but it's a bullshit money grab to withhold support for MP3s just so they can try to funnel consumers into another subscription service.

Sony's been in a great position this time around. MS has been running around with its dick out, so they haven't had to say as much to stay ahead. I've been wondering when we'd get down to the nitty-gritty details. I expect we'll get a face full of crap from MS a little later, too.

I know, but including the pretty archaic Wii (in terms of media capability) just increases the weight of the statement. Finally the bad repuatation can be put to good use!
I understand. Yeah, i'm very surprised to see PS4 not having support for MP3, i would never had guessed that this would happen.

Gamers complain a lot, sure... but this is just straight up dickery on Sony's part. It's not even a hardware issue. It's like... "Yeah would could easily do this but FUCK YOU."

I understand if people don't care, but the issue truly is indefensible.
