Has Sony dropped the ball with no showpiece fighter available at launch?

I know many fear a new wave of fighters with the accessibility and ease of play of , say, Mario Kart but I think that is where it needs to go. That, and moving away from the artificial 2D plane.

Fighters are dying due to lack of acessability, alot of people can't play fighting games without getting clobbered whether it be AI or real players. Many filthy casuals, plebs etc. (developers main constituents) find them to be too hard and don't care to buy them. Especially since they buy games for multi player, and why buy a game heavily weighted to skill... "that sounds challenging, and I like to play games on EZ, chill and kill ya know bro." I also think some of the things that kept fighting games relevant aren't necessarily prevalent anymore. For example

-nostalgia of the arcade
-difficulty of developing for consoles equating to the lack of games and variety.
-more focused fan base (more hardcore gamers)

Feel free to add more, but I think those were driving forces.

So to answer your questions, no, I don't think it's an issue. They have bigger fish to fry.

How are fighters dying?

Injustice, a new IP, came out and stayed on NPD charts longer than I can remember a fighter this generation doing and is getting a PC/PS4 release
USF4 comes out soon.
New blazblue comes out soon/is out if you import.
SC2 HD comes out in November.
Brand FUCKING NEW GUILTY GEAR comes out next year
No doubt a new MK will be released for next gen.
Skullgirls constantly getting updates and patches and has several characters scheduled.
KoF13 just released on steam with decent netcode.
DoA5U just came out with an awesome F2P model
Tekken Revolution trying out a, less awesom imo, F2P model
TTT2 came out last year
Divekick is great
Killer Instinct coming out on XB1 and lots of people giving it glowing reviews from hands-on play
SmashBros is going to come out and be Smashbros.

So...what? How are they dying?

PS. Brand new guilty gear.

Oh, and that's not even counting stuff that I take less seriously like UNS series, or the new Jojo's game that'll be getting a digital release. Or stuff like Gundam which is apparently really good.

Has sony ever had the ball with fighting games?

Dang.
Nailed it.

To me, not having an showpiece (exclusive) racing game is a bigger deal. Injustice should check the fighter box since it's not on Xbox One (yet) but there's no exclusive racer.

Of course they will release it stateside, but Xbox version still isn't announced and that is not a good sign.

Anyway, I don't think any non-SF fighting game have any major influence on console sales. KI won't do as good as Microsoft hopes it will.

I would argue that a new Street Fighter wouldn't boost console sales significantly either. People like to forget that Street Fighter was on a near decade long hiatus after Third Strike. Not only that, but the casual fanbase hated the SF3 series, so SF4 was also heavily advertised as a return to form of sorts. There is no way in hell that they are going to recreate that hype just a year removed from the last iteration of SF4.

To bring back Bloody Roar, the game would have to be BR 2 tiers of godliness. The franchise has been on a downward trajectory since then and it needs returning to its former glory.

Why is everyone talking about Bloody Roar anyway? lol

I don't buy that because Call of Duty is still the number 1 best selling video game from year to year and that is JUST as inaccessible as your average fighter. Not everyone is going to be able to do 110% 80 hit combos with roman cancel resets, just in the same way that not everyone is going to be doing 40-0 Nuke runs with at least 30 360 no scope kills.

Games can be hard. It all depends on how much you want to get out of a particular game, genre be damned. If more fighting games had interesting, engaging single player modes that told a compelling story while teaching you how to play the game, more fighters would sell, netherrealms games are evidence of that.

If it's not Ultra Street Fighter IV then no one (in any significant capacity) cares. And Capcom wants to make sure it makes money so we won't be seeing it for a little while.

Where did this "Capcom is the only fighter developer that counts" mentality come from?

It's obviously not true if you look at sales, and it's also not true if you look at releases.

Lol at Injustice. Next gen indeed. No fighter and no racer are pretty big holes for me, really, not to mention I'm not crazy about the only platformer they're releasing. Puppeteer would have been better for a PS4 launch title than Knack IMO.

Matchmaking in fighters is definitely a huge problem. At the start ,everyone as far as the system is concerned, is a beginner so you have top players matched up with beginners and they get eaten alive and frustrated. Not only did they lose they lost so bad and so fast that they likely didn't even get to learn from yhe loss. It just takes too much time for those players to move up the ranks away from the beginner players.

Xbox One isn't getting Guilty Gear: Xrd -SIGN-, or Injustice: Gods Among Us Ultimate Edition like PS4 is.

Perhaps Sony will have someone make something like a brand new Bloody Roar game as a response to having Killer Instinct exclusively on Xbox One.

Shitty capcom fans and shitty other company fans that get jealous of capcom games being played/shown more than their games.

1 is people who are scared of stuff outside of their comfort zone, the other group is too lazy to do the work needed to bring their games up.

Edit: See Mesoian's post below

The fact that Capcom fighters are the only ones anyone cares about on a higher level. MK9 was there for a while but the constant updating and the borked DLC and the bad online...People got sick of having to relearn the game every week because each new piece of content NR put out was broken. That and that game was unbalanced for a LOOOOOOOOOOONG time before things got evened out.

SF4 is still seen as the pinnacle of fighting games this generation. Whether your like it or hate it, you can't argue that it's a very well built game that rewards smart play rather than execution. And even though Marvel is fucking stupid (because it's fucking stupid) it's exciting and fun to play. At an anime con I went to last week, people just stopped as they walked by the game room and ended up circling around the marvel station watching people play because what was going on on the screen was crazy. No other game has gotten to that point. High level injustice is fucking boring. High level Smash is confusing (though still pretty cool). High level KOF13 is EXTREMELY technical and so hard to do for the average player that most people simply don't care about it, if they understand it at all.

Capcom is very good when it comes to striking the balance between the layman and the expert and is good about creating a playing field that is interesting, most so than other game developers. It's why people get so mad at them when they do dumb shit like not supporting their games through DLC in order to sell another physical copy, or when they refuse to patch their games or when they don't market their shit so people don't even realize it's out.

I never thought I'd be excited about Ultra SF4, but...I am I guess. It's nuts.

Namco's Tekken vs Street Fighter woulda been a nice launch title. Whatever happened to that?

Ya ha.

I know many fear a new wave of fighters with the accessibility and ease of play of , say, Mario Kart but I think that is where it needs to go. That, and moving away from the artificial 2D plane.

People say that MvsC3 is hard, but I think that's because they never got the explanation that every character has basically the same beginner combo. MvsC3 is the most accessible fighting game in YEARS (edit: except maybe Persona 4A)

Since when did the big three start using FIGHTERS of all genres to showcase their console?

O.o

PS1/Saturn days.

That said, the FG folks tend to be slow to upgrade, but they come- they're not a group you need to worry about too much.

I don't think KI is going to move many FG folks towards the Xbone.

Also count me in for excited for USF4- it looks like it's going to fix the set play issue I have with SF4 series in general.

Unless you're talking about a Sony Smash sequel, I don't understand. They don't have a good fighting series and they certainly wouldn't pay up for an exclusive Tekken at this point.

Not everyone can land the amazing team behind Battleship:The Movie:The Game for a fighter. That was pure luck.
To be fair to DH they are working with veteran members of the FGC to make KI right on a competitive level. How that translates to the casual level remains to be seen, but there are tutorials in game to help them along.

how many ball dropping threads does this make......................................................................................................................................? please god, no more

Yo, real talk, that game was WAAAAAAAAAAAY better than it had any right to be. It wasn't great by any means, but I expected that game to blow and it was pretty okay.

Time for a new Power Stone?!

I would love to see another Power Stone!

On topic, I really use to enjoy fighters, with all the unlocks and stuff. This Gen has really soured me on them. I just can't justify 50-60 for one anymore. This is mostly thanks to the horrible handling DLC content. It felt like I had to spend 120+ for the same experience I use to get in one package at release.

Take MvC3 for example. I love the previous entries but after seeing all the "cut out" DLC and the three quick releases of SF4 versions I waited. In the end I waitied for the "final" version of MVC3 that I moved on and didn't end up buying it at all. I hope things will turn around with next Gen bit I fear with the introduction of F2P fighting games will become more limited and expensive. Unfortunately they lend themselves to monetization easily.

Fighting games are becoming niche. They definitely dropped the ball on drive club, though.

Shooters are the new flagship title. Thank Halo for that.

Its really not up to them, because to get a quality fighting game then SNK, Capcom, Namco or SEGA AM2 has to be involved. Sony has no power over these publishers.

As far as i know, none of these studios have announced a next gen fighting game, so not much to do.

Well played.

I remember downloading that advert to test my 720p 32inch Bravia back in the day. Can't believe I've had it for nearly 7 years now.

It makes me sad at least, no fighters on PS4 for now...
But it's more about Capcom dropping the ball than Sony i think.. They had something for every console before that. Even the Vita.

Now a real next gen fighter will take time but a perfect iq SFIV would be nice. They could play with shaders to make it new and shiny.

No, it's a niche market even smaller than racers.

Bigger titles can sell ~2-3 million units and sustain active online communities with DLC.

If the Xbox One and the PS4 were the same price, Killer Instinct might sway me the other way. I'm not even that hyped about Killer Instinct, if it were Street Fighter, there would be no question what console I'd buy.

Oh good, the sequel to "Sony Dropped the Ball with their First Party Launch Window."

Just what I was thinking.

To answer OP. No, Sony did not drop the ball. KI is hardly a "killer" app.
In comparison, MS dropped the ball so much it's benched for the rest of the season.

There's Injustice that's coming out at Launch.

Not necessarily my cup of tea, but its a good fighter. I'm pretty sure more fighters are coming over the years. Plus I still have my PS3 for all my fighters.
