Has Sony dropped the ball with no showpiece fighter available at launch?

What happened to those Bloody Roar rumors that Hip Hop Gamer had the inside scoop on?

Started and ended there. That game probably existed in preplanning but I don't know who in their right mind would fund it at this point. The FGC doesn't give a fuck about bloody roar, I don't know who'd they be selling to.

EASILY.

Roster was not the problem with that game.

Kinda true. Though there are reasons for that.

Now, that's not a "traditional 2d, 1x1, fighter", is it?

If it did work like that, I wouldn't be able to play it. I suck at MxC. Too combo based. Demands too much dedication to be any good.

PSABR was so easy to pick up and play and just have fun. I actually became good at it playing just over weekends. lol

I never played Injustice, so it's going to be new to me. I'm just torn on whether I want the Vita or PS4 version.

During new console launch, I tend to hold off on certain games, expecting a next gen version. Injustice just seemed like one of those games that would probably be getting a next gen version, even though the current version came out a while ago.

I'm glad I waited.

Has Sony Dropped the ball with <insert perceived xb1 advantage>?

Is this some sort of meme? Or the continuation of the Sony Too™. Sony Too™ 2: Electric Bugaboo.

Don't care about launch but I would love to see them grab an exclusive fighter for the PS4 as well...and by exclusive I mean revive an old school IP that needs funding to be revived.

Bushido Blade

or

Bloody roar pls

I mean they have Seth at Sony Santa Monica now...would be an outright shame to not utilize his talents

That's right. Capcom has the money to market and advertise their games much better than even Namco of all people. No one gives a fuck about NetherRealm, SNK, Namco Bandai, Arc. Sys and the myriad of shit-tier to decent indie devs making fighting games.

Well...not really. If anything, Capcom needs to spend more time and money on traditional advertising because what they do now barely counts. Capcom has been pretty much dependant on word of mouth and the FGC to get people excited about their fighting games because they can. But let's drop back to Tatsunoko or UMvsC3, they did next to nothing, and the initial sales of those games reflect that.

Netherrealm did quite a good job with MK9 and, though you can make the argument that it's a bit nostalgia driven, that game sold very very well and laid down the foundation of expanding on the franchise. I saw more marketing for MK9 than I ever did for any Capcom fighter this generation, SF4 included. And injustice seems to be doing well, considering.

Framerate is king.

Eh. If a game has a great artstyle, you can lock yourself at 30 and be fine. KOF13 doesn't need to go at 60fps. But if I can run KOF13 on PC at 1920x1080 (which I do), you're damn sure I'm gonna do it. Though to your point, Skullgirls looks AMAZING running at 60fps at 1920x1080.

divekick and injustice are launch games

DiveKick is not. If it were, I would buy it on PS4.

All I know is that Killer Instinct looks more fun than any other PS4 or Xbone game I've seen, fighter or not. Back when they first announced it, I didn't give a shit; I never played Killer Instinct, Double Helix was known for producing garbage, and I just assumed the game was a graphical showcase with no substance. After seeing more videos and listening to the developers, I saw they were really invested and were talking about their mechanics openly and honestly. It reminded me of Skullgirls, and I love Skullgirls.

If Sony or Microsoft or devs should take anything from this, it's that even a niche title from a developer with a bad reputation can win over people if the interviews and other information are clear and honest about the core gameplay.

...you should try the KI demo before you commit to anything.

Anyone else feel Sony really dropped the ball with no showpiece fighter being available at launch? Fighters have been a console debut staple it seems for the past few gens and for good reason; they can easily set the early bar for how pretty your console can make things look. I think one thing ms has done right since they've been in the game is having a graphical showpiece fighter available day one or at least very soon after release. Going back to psx it seemed like a good practice. Unfortunate Sony doesn't see the use in having a beautiful pick up and play versus showpiece.

Well you have Injustice: Ultimate Edition.

But even if it didn't, outside of a couple of franchises(Street Fighter, MK, Smash Bros, etc), the fighting genre is VERY NICHE.

Something like Killer Instinct will do very little to sell Xbox Ones.

What would I give for a new bloody roar on ps4(but nothing like br4 that one was crap)

I find funny how I read a rumor of bloody roar coming back like every 6 months, it makes me sad everytime : (

Now, that's not a "traditional 2d, 1x1, fighter", is it?

I mean...yeah, it is. Marvel 3 would be super cool if they just had a 1 on 1 mode. There are no characters doing over 650k by themselves without assists. and PSABR would have been far better serviced being a traditional 2D fighter, tag mode or not. The problem was that the FGC isn't what Sony wanted for an audience. They wanted that Smash money, that "16 million sold in it's first month" cash. I don't think anyone except Nintendo can do that though, so they made something that was confusing and rigid and, ulimately, something that fighting games fans weren't interested in and ultimately didn't have enough Playstation nostaglia to get non fighting game fans in. Ironically, if they had made the DLC stuff which never came out as part of the main game, they would have been golden. THAT was the stuff they needed. I don't know anyone who played midevil, everyone I talked to who had a PS1 considered that to be a bad game.

For me yes!

I'm a big fan of fighting games! I bought a Sega Saturn for Virtua Fighter!

>.>

Guilty gear Xrd will be coming to PS4. That'll satisfy me for now! Where is my Tekken, Virtua Fighter, etc... :-)

The market overall does not give a crap about fighters anymore. Seems only the big franchises from the nineties and games featuring characters from some other media can get any pull.

oh my fucking wallabee jesus I would throw money at whoever made Bloody Roar HD for the PS4

I'd say that each one of those examples listed becomes decreasingly significant to the console. Did Soul Calibur sell DCs? Probably. Did DoA4 sell 360s? I doubt it.

Did anybody say system sellers? Graphical showcase is what I read and was responding to, and each of those games showed off the consoles graphical prowess. DoA4's IQ even handily beats DoA5's.

Bloody Roar was developed by Hudson Soft.
Hudson Soft was acquired by Konami, and turned into 'Konami Digital Entertainment.'

Hudson Soft, and the Bloody Roar IP is dead. Fuck Konami.

All I know is that Guilty Gear will come next year (as it looks, only on Playstation platforms) and that's all i care for.

The ball firmly in grasp.

Eh, A good solid fighter can pull in 500k in it's first month if it's doing what it does well. But the market balanced out it's need for fighting games last generation, when people were throwing all sorts of shit at the wall and trying to make it stick (remember Marvel Nemesis or Meteor Blade?).

I bet Xrd will be on everything (except WiiU).

I suppose you could make an argument that Sony has a pretty weak launch altogether but there is a lot on the horizon so I'm not concerned. X1 first for KI DR3 and Titanfall in march and ps4 holiday 2014 for the order infamous maybe a naughty dog title. 2014 is gonna be a great year for gamers. I'm ready for halo quantum break order and a anything naughty dog.

For someone like me? Yes. This is the main reason I am more interested in the xbone. I then remember Xrd isn't coming to it and that's a deal breaker right there.

Maybe it's because I'm biased and out of touch, but I thought fighters had kinda fallen out of mainstream favor this gen and are now relegated to almost niche status. So no I do not see this as Sony making a mistake.

Guilty Gear is a win but that is not till later.

Fighting games are great with a new console because you can show off the graphics and 2 people can play. Split screen FPS is aways lame.

Well duh. That's why there's a demo in the first place.

I'm just happy to see a dev actually tell us all about their game and show it to us (And let some of us play it too!) before release. We've had some serious shitfests recently with Aliens: Colonial Marines and Simcity where people got burned by marketing. Even if Killer Instinct is a bad game because everyone is playing Jago, or because the online isn't as good as expected, or because the combo breaker system doesn't work out in practice as well as it does in paper, at least we don't have to deal with that bullshit.

I'm not getting a next-gen console yet though. Maybe after I've Platinum'd Dark Souls 2.

Yep ..i mean I doubt even if they make a new one it would take a huge budget or anything.

If any of our beloved insiders read this, got any idea as to what Seth is up to these days?

I don't think it means much in the grand scheme of things, just disappointing for fighting game fans and variety's sake. What happened to those Bloody Roar PS4 rumours? Was that all horseshit?

Fighters are dying due to lack of acessability, alot of people can't play fighting games without getting clobbered whether it be AI or real players. Many filthy casuals, plebs etc. (developers main constituents) find them to be too hard and don't care to buy them. Especially since they buy games for multi player, and why buy a game heavily weighted to skill... "that sounds challenging, and I like to play games on EZ, chill and kill ya know bro." I also think some of the things that kept fighting games relevant aren't necessarily prevalent anymore. For example

-nostalgia of the arcade
-difficulty of developing for consoles equating to the lack of games and variety.
-more focused fan base (more hardcore gamers)

Feel free to add more, but I think those were driving forces.

So to answer your questions, no, I don't think it's an issue. They have bigger fish to fry.
