Has Sony dropped the ball with no showpiece fighter available at launch?

So because the PS4 is in the best position right now, we have to make up stuff to be worried about?

Fighters are a relatively niche genre now anyways. I would argue Sony is making the right move by making Killzone their flagship graphical launch title.

Injustice will fill the gap for me. I didn't play it on ps3/360.

This, but it'll be a rental if possible, cos i find fighters to be incredibly short lived experiences. Entertaining for 5 minutes, but not really much beyond that.

I might pick up the new guilty gear though, just cos it looks so damn pretty.

Since every generation before this one?

SoulCalibur (DC)
TTT1 (PS2)
DoA3 (Xbox)
DoA4 (360)

Tekken has always been heavily featured in Sony's CG "target renderings."

:P

Not at all. Especially for a genre like fighting games, I'd rather the team take their time working on ironing out the kinks than to have a title for launch just for the sake of having a title for launch.

More like Capcom and Namco dropped the ball. I feel like it's going to be a long wait for their games to drop but at least there is Guilty Gear.

Wouldn't they need a fighter IP in their catalog to be able to do this?

Do you really expect them to create a brand new fighter IP for launch? That's a huge risk.

Unless you're talking about a Sony Smash sequel, I don't understand. They don't have a good fighting series and they certainly wouldn't pay up for an exclusive Tekken at this point.

Not everyone can land the amazing team behind Battleship:The Movie:The Game for a fighter. That was pure luck.

A staple at launch for who, exactly? The PS3 and 360 did not have a fighter, the Wii U did not have a fighter, the Wii did not have a fighter... In fact, while I'm sure they weren't the only ones, the only consoles I remember actually launching with a memorable fighter were the PSX, Saturn, PS2 and Dreamcast.

I'm not entirely sure what you're trying to imply by dropping the ball, but things seemed to work out pretty well for every other console that didn't launch with a fighter.

Uh, Tekken Tag Tournament 2 says hi? Unless you mean exclusive fighters, of course.

I actually somewhat expected Tekken Revolution to make the jump to next gen at the PS4's launch, what with the heavy support for F2P being there and all.

More like Namco/Sony dropped the ball by not ensuring Ridge Racer for launch. Only Sony system to not launch with a Ridge Racer? The Vita. See how badly it's doing?

Eh? Eh? =P

But seriously, no Ridge sucks. =(

In as much as MS dropped the ball not having a showpiece shooter available for launch, yeah.

I actually disagree with you there.

The Xbox has an exclusive fighter, and the PS4 has an exclusive fighter.

The PS4 has an exclusive shooter, the Xbox does not.

edit:

Uh, Tekken Tag Tournament 2 says hi? Unless you mean exclusive fighters, of course.

I missed that one. You're right. Wii U had a fighter at launch.

Nah!

Killer Instinct looks awesome, but it was more of a surprise rather than anything.

Injustice (Even if a port) can suffice for now!

Fighters don't sell well.

They're popular and have big followings, but they just don't sell. That's why it was such a pain to get P4A out here. People love fighting games, but they just don't buy them. I'd love to see a launch PS4 figher game, trust me I would, but it's a smart choice on their part, really. Most of the larger fighting games come out towards the end of a consoles life span because more people have the consoles at that point. You'll usually see one game sneak in kind of early so it can show potential and poke the others onto the consoles, but I don't expect a major fighter to come out for at least a year.

PS Vita had Ridge Racer a few weeks post-launch. And it was terrible.

NetherRealm fighters say hi. Injustice was in the top 10 for NPD for several months. It's near 4 million in sales too.

Is it worth starting a new thread about how both MS and Sony dropped the ball by having no RPG at launch?

I'm joking, but I would actually have liked something like that at launch :(

I agree no Ridge sucks, but Vita DID have a Ridge Racer game at launch and it didn't do much good =)

Heh, how come this gets stated in so many PS4 threads that aren't 100% positive?

I don't think the OP is trying to make something up for a "PS4 doomed" thread -- he/she would just like a new fighter for the PS4's launch.

No.

That's actually a valid question. :P Shooters are far more popular than fighting games.

Titanfall. Not to mention you can always count on Microsoft for exclusive shooters. Sony hasn't had a decent, and I'm being generous, exclusive fighter since Battle Arena Toshinden on the PS1.

Fighters haven't been playing a "showpiece" role at any recent hardware launch though. So not sure why Sony is getting called out on the mat for this more than anyone else. KI looks nice enough, but it's hardly "showpiece" @ 720p with visual fidelity that doesn't set the bar any higher than Ryse or Forza will on the XBO. I doubt any 1st party fighter Sony would have come up with would have been any more of a showpiece than the likes of Shadowfall.

It is nice to have the genre covered at least, and for that they have Injustice.

Mortal Kombat/Injustice. These games can actually outsell Capcom fighters.

Can. But often don't.

We have Xrd in March. Everything will be fine. I'm more interested in seeing whether or not KI can stand on it's own two feet with Microsoft's crazy sales model. The FGC seems pretty cold on it and the last build I played wasn't great.

Not really but I will say that KI is the only next gen game that I am genuinely excited for. Too bad I know that I will enjoy the PS4 more in the long run. Really sucks seeing all this KI stuff though.

There's a difference between saying "I really wish Sony would have included a graphical showpiece fighter in their launch line-up" and "Sony dropped the ball (made a mistake) by not including a fighter in their launch line-up." It would be fine if the OP simply wanted a fighter game released, but he seems to imply that Sony made a strategic mistake by not having one.

Pretty sure P4A sold extremely well for the budget. Pretty sure SF, MvC, Injustice, MK are all multimillion sellers. Pretty sure SC4 and SC5 sold 2million or just shy of it+. Pretty sure TTT2 did the same.

Oh, and smash bros something something.

Just because it's not CoD does not mean they don't "sell well."

Yeah, I understand we have Injustice and I support them for going full force into it with trying to push it onto next gen. I like fighting games just as much as anyone here. But when it comes to selling a console, if you're going to take the biggest profit away, you're pushing the newest FPS as a priority to your console. That's just what really hits hard and sells these days.

I'm not saying that they don't have the big numbers, because some do, but when it comes to what the majority want, it's not a fighter. So as someone who wants the most bank a fighter isn't a priority.
