Has Sony dropped the ball with no showpiece fighter available at launch?

Dropped the ball? Come on now.

Anyone else feel Sony really dropped the ball with no showpiece fighter being available at launch? Fighters have been a console debut staple it seems for the past few gens and for good reason; they can easily set the early bar for how pretty your console can make things look. I think one thing ms has done right since they've been in the game is having a graphical showpiece fighter available day one or at least very soon after release. Going back to psx it seemed like a good practice. Unfortunate Sony doesn't see the use in having a beautiful pick up and play versus showpiece.

So are you trying to say that killer instinct is a good demonstrations of xbone's technical capabilities?...lol

Fighters died last gen, FPS's are the new Fighters( showcase )

No one gives a fuck about non-Capcom fighters, so no.

This. Unfortunately.

Except for Playstation All-stars, what else could Sony bring to the genre?

Besides, the market is extremelly crowded. SF, MxC, MK, Injustice, BlazBlue, P4A, GG... Serioulsy too many games.

EDIT: Also, Fighters are a staple of console launchs? Since when?!

The fighting genre isnt nearly as big with the general public as it used to be....it will be a long time before a Tekken 3 or Soul Calibur 2 happens again

Haven't seen a fighter system launch game since Tekken Tag 1. Before that it was probably Battle Arena Toshinden. Not sure what you mean by it being a staple. The most recent fighter that has probably ever been a graphical showpiece for a system is probably Soul Calibur 2 and maybe some of the NeoGeo fighters.

Back to the question asked, you're the first person I've seen say Sony failed because they're not releasing a fighting game at launch. If I had a choice between playing Killer Instinct, Smash Bros, and Playstation All-Stars, I'd most likely pass on PSAS.

Fightsticks will also need to be repurchased since they're not compatible with PS4. I can definitely wait. I'll be ok with Blazblue and Ultra SF4 later when I need my fighting game fix.

I honestly think Sony had a btter chance at making a traditional fighter with their characters.

Titanfall. Not to mention you can always count on Microsoft for exclusive shooters. Sony hasn't had a decent, and I'm being generous, exclusive fighter since Battle Arena Toshinden on the PS1.
Titanfall isn't a launch game. It's very close to being one, though.

Kind of funny when you think about how Xbox has been criticised for being a "shooterbox".

Why does it have to be a technical achievement to be good?

Yeah, I understand we have Injustice and I support them for going full force into it with trying to push it onto next gen. I like fighting games just as much as anyone here. But when it comes to selling a console, if you're going to take the biggest profit away, you're pushing the newest FPS as a priority to your console. That's just what really hits hard and sells these days.

I'm not saying that they don't have the big numbers, because some do, but when it comes to what the majority want, it's not a fighter. So as someone who wants the most bank a fighter isn't a priority.

To be fair, a fighter has just as much chance as selling well during a console launch as any other games slated for the PS4 right now. The variety in genre definitely would have helped considering we have 2 FPS's, a bevy of sports games, a few 3rd person action titles and a handful of downloadables.

They got Injustice, that's enough for now. A lot of people will dive into that game for something to play on their PS4, I know I've given it some though.

what it look like on PS4?

Like the PC version.

Seriously though, don't expect it to be night and day. Injustice was already pretty, though it didn't have a great color pallet.

The PS4 (and the XB1 for that matter) are launching supported by three of the largest game franchises currently - CoD, BF and AC. Those three will drive more sales than any other game could bar GTA / Halo / Gran Turismo.

Everything else is niche compared to that and would make zero difference to console sales at this point.

So no.

Sony had exclusive fighters when they were partnered with Namco. Now? Not so much. And who cares really. Are we talking about Killer Instinct not made by Rare? That's like a Street Fighter game made by Gearbox or Virtua Fighter made by Insomniac or Tekken made by treyarch.

It was more of a comment for him and you. Maybe if I put anyway at the end of the sentence it would have made more sense. The tech argument is used so much that I am a little twitchy with the attitude but again it was for both of you.

Nope.
How can you put Kratos, Sly, Jak, Drake, Nariko, Kat, Sir Dan and Sweet Tooth in a traditional 2D, 1x1 fighter? It would look ridiculous.
Party game was the way to go and they did it right. The game was great but people didn't apreciate it too much. Move on and forget about it.

Disclaimer: I loved Battle Royalle. It's my most played fighting game ever (in hours). My friends loved it, my cousins loved it. It can be casual or deep. I'm sad that it won't get a sequel anytime soon. But I'm not fooling myself thinking that a traditional fighter would be better. It wouldn't. At all.

Eh, that's a bit disingenuous.

Though, watching people talk about KI, I wonder if they 1: have played the new game yet or 2: remember what old killer instinct actually was. Though I have a certain fondness for KI, I wouldn't exactly call it a good fighting game.

The problem with depending on the fighting game community to be hyped for a launch fighter is that people who like fighting games are generally pretty slow to warm up to new ones. They like tried and true games from known developers with an established pedigree. You can get them onto new shit, but it's going to be a much slower adoption than you'll see with other genres.

There's not going to be a mass exodus of the FGC to Killer Instinct, even if it's legit the best fighting game ever. The majority of people are still going to be playing SF4 and MvC3 six months from now. The value of having a fighter in your launch window is actually pretty low for exactly that reason.

I have KI1 in my Quasicade arcade cabinet with modded original Xbox running it. It's fun. I also have the SNES version in that same setup. It's not an amazing fighting game but it's decent fun.

(It has KI2 as well but the Xbox doesn't run that one at full speed so we don't even bother. )

I liked it alot but I just could not get over how much better Smash Bros. was (My opinion). It was something that was constantly on my mind while playing it. Like wow this is fun but I really rather be playing Smash Bros. right now.

I don't really remember showpiece fighters being a tradition for launches or anything. All I remember was the launch of last gen when the Dreamcast launched with Soul Calibur, the PS2 had Tekken Tag Tournament, and the Gamecube had Melee.

I'm more concerned about how long it'll take before fighters really show up next-gen. All we've got now is Xrd and Killer Instinct. Then again it took until around 2008 for fighters to really show up on current gen.

Since every generation before this one?

SoulCalibur (DC)
TTT1 (PS2)
DoA3 (Xbox)
DoA4 (360)

Tekken has always been heavily featured in Sony's CG "target renderings."

:P

I'd say that each one of those examples listed becomes decreasingly significant to the console. Did Soul Calibur sell DCs? Probably. Did DoA4 sell 360s? I doubt it.

It's also not a new game.
Neither is MVC3, and it's the most popular.

As long as both consoles have a launch fighting game to keep the community in their sights I'm happy.

I suck at fighting games tho. Not sure what the majority of the community wants, to be released on next-gen conses but I'm pretty sure KI isn't going to dominate tournaments.

Kinda true. Though there are reasons for that.

That's right. Capcom has the money to market and advertise their games much better than even Namco of all people. No one gives a fuck about NetherRealm, SNK, Namco Bandai, Arc. Sys and the myriad of shit-tier to decent indie devs making fighting games.

Until they market their ass off? No one will care in the long run.

KI is a show piece indeed. DAT 720p. ;)

No one gives a fuck about resolution in their fighting games. Framerate is king.

Another point: No one is going to buy a next gen console for a fighting game for another three to four years. Everyone will buy Xrd for PS3. Persona 4 Ultimax will be on PS3. Your anime fighters will be on PS3. KOFXIV will be on PS3.

Just buy a PS3 if you want new fighting games.

No one gives a damn about Injustice, either. The pro people who devoted time to that broken piece of trash gave up playing after EVO.

I am still sad that Sony didn't let Superbot make a real fighting game. There was so much talent there and they could have done something good.

Regarding the launch, I don't think that missing an exclusive or a big new fighting game is so important. Injustice should be enough and even without it I don't think it could be considered dropping the ball.
