Do you ever get crazy nostalgia from smells?

Tonight I had a crazy moment where I smelled a particular chemical at work and it immediately sent me back to preschool. Also this happens a lot with perfumes and such.

Let me ask you GAF, any scents really send you back?

Smells are my #1 memory trigger. I've been biking through town a lot lately, and as I gather the smells from the shops I'm constantly recalling random scenes from childhood.

Pretty much this. I love the sudden waves of nostalgia.

What's with this guy? Why is it getting posted all the time now?

Yes. I'll often smell something and it'll remind me of elementary school. This just happened to me a couple days ago.

I don't know, I didn't put it in the title. I'm guessing a ModBot function for the holidays.

Scent is one of the most powerful triggers for memory. For me, the smell of rain on pavement is specifically evocative of my childhood.

Yup especially if it's certain smells in old places or foods, most likely foods.

Then i'm all

I do... after I'm sure its not a stroke.

I actually just had one the other day. I was standing behind a female in the grocery checkout line and I caught a whiff of her shampoo and it reminded me of a lady I had desires for back in college. It then made me remember how idealistic I was and how the days passed by in what I can only now describe as care-free. It felt like my adolescent life was flashing before my eyes and it was just triggered by one smell. I just hope I wasn't staring because I'm sure I would have been labeled as a creeper.

The smell of a Swiffer duster reminds me of Grand Theft Auto 3 and playing it with my best friend.

I have no idea why. It's a good feeling though.

So they got rid of emoticons to clean up the forum and make it look nicer yet this is being dumped infront of random thread titles?

Okay.

Once in a while I'll catch the scent of some soap or perfume that takes me back to when I was 5 or 6 and had some animal soaps. I recall there being a gorilla soap, and there were at least three colors among them (red, green, yellow). Those soaps were cool.

There's also some kind of perfume-y smell that reminds me of my earliest schools years, kindergarten I think. It was either the classroom or the teacher that carried the smell.

As for smells with bad memories, the smell of a car, an older car that's accumulated multiple smells, or has just been running for years. It's so distinct, and it instantly reminds me of being in those stifling cars on cloudy/rainy days, with a hint of minor carsickness. Smelling one now gives me a feel of that seatbelt GIF guy, right from the bottom of my stomach.

It's something DOTA 2 fans are posting on other sites because Valve didn't do Diretide, the Halloween update for DOTA this year.

Yea. Smells are extremely powerful.

The worst one for me is when a woman is wearing the same perfume as someone I used to date. It completely scrambles my mind.

I get nostalgic for my parents and home when I smell cigarette smoke. I live in an area with strict laws about smoking so it's not so often I smell that smell.

Whenever I smell cigarette smoke I always think of Vegas. As a kid growing up in a non-smoking home Vegas was probably the first time I ever really smelled it.

Then you bent her over the checkout belt and made her a woman?

- I get sudden feelings of being in football practice when I smell freshly cut grass.
- The smell of cooking gumbo deeply reminds me of my grandmother.

God damn, this so much.

Ya, me too on that one.

I also find that certain lighting from the sun can get me in a very... depressed/yearning for the past kind of mood. When it's very yellowy as the sun is going down on a Sunday afternoon sorta thing. Man, I always wish I was a kid again when I hit those moments. Pit of my stomach sadness for the lost past.

I have to wonder if the autumn air/burning fire wood ones just apply to everyone, because they sure as hell apply to me as well, and I can't even think of any reason for those smells to be nostalgic for me. But they are.
