Game Informer: "Ryse: Son Of Rome Is As Fun As Dialing Phone Numbers" (ouch)

This type of game seems to be a love it or hate it type of game so i'm not surprised. I'll wait to reserve judgement for myself.

Day old thread...Positive Xbox news, new info and videos JUST posted today. 5 pages http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=710280

THIS thread has been up for little over an hour, negative Xbox news, 8 pages.

SO sad...
Well, you know, that's how the internet works. Negative press attracts more attention.

Graphically it is, at least until Infamous comes out. But hardly anyone focuses on gameplay when they talk about next gen stuff.

He did. He thought it was awesome becuase there was going to be some secret mode that cloned Batman apparently:

From Weekend Confirmed's podcast:

"It is the most next gen game I saw from either company. . . . Behind closed doors the guy explained the game in a much more interesting way, which was basically referencing Batman. And they are doing performance capture. He said they are doing performance capture. Motion capture is last gen, performance capture is this new gen. It is performance capture in everything. In every moment you get performance capture. So you get facial in moment from actors even during combat.

It looks sexy as hell. It is very very next generation. The way it plays everybody is just like oh it's QTE but they let leak that there is a mode [that he did not actually play or see] where all those button prompts go away and your just judging which button to push based on the animations of the character and its the same button prompts that Batman uses. ... They basically ripped off Batman which I've been wanting everyone to do..."

So this game looks good but is a turd to play.

I kind of feel sorry for all of those that have pre-ordered.

Don't be, it doesn't take much to see this game is boring as heck. If they can't see that from all the same old, same old gameplay videos well....

Not really. A game's sole job is to be entertaining in some way to the player.

From what I've seen, Ryse has KZ beat on facial animation but is losing on most else.

But Jeff Cannata said it was the most next gen of all games...
He was speaking of the effect of Ryse's performance capture techniques.

he also likened the combat to Arkham Asylum, though he may have assumed that like AA there'd be other gameplay elements to balance the game out and keep it from being too repetitive.

The Dark Souls Mushroom Daddy gif is so funny. I keep imagining those mushroom kids in that gif as they start running away saying "oh no, Daddy is drunk again! He's being violent!"

It's the "come at me bro" gesture from the player and the white phantom goading him on from behind that really does it for me.

Pre-rendered cutscenes huh.

Hahaha I knew it. All those went all hyper over pre-rendered cutscenes. Crytek was full of shit. The difference was pretty obvious.

For some reason, the video compression on the cinema sequences is incredibly noticeable, making the pre-rendered stuff look worse than the real-time graphics.

derrick's goty.

I was mocking Canatta's naivete there. From the video I saw today from IGN it looks like it's trying to be like Batman's combat but it can't get anywhere near the level of timing and skill it takes to pull off high level, diverse combos. The game looks as bad as it did at E3 where I created "The Ryse award for worst game of E3" that I will use for future E3s. It was that bad.

You don't, but if you're going the 3rd party route then don't hire Crytek for anything other than making an engine. They suck at making video games.

No more than you suck at judging games.

Crysis was one of the best first person shooters ever made. And FarCry was also fantastic in a time of Doom 3 and Half-Life 2.

I must say was surprised when I saw Crytek move into this direction when making games. While it's probably equally difficult to make the top-tier FPS game as it is to make a 3rd person game, It takes more skill IMO to make a *decent* 3rd person game than a decent FPS, which can be a deciding factor for something so time sensitive as a launch game. The whole 'your character' thing component basically doesn't exist in an FPS, and the interaction with other characters and the environment is minimal compared to (good) 3rd person games. Just read this gamespot's quote below to see what I had in mind.

Gamespot :

So closely does the camera focus on the violence (and Marius' back) that I was frequently attacked by enemies I couldn't see, making it all but impossible to counter their blades. Outside of combat, moving around as Marius wasn't very satisfying. The levels I played were as linear as they come, and every time I tried to move outside Ryse's limited corridors, I jittered and bumped against the geometry and invisible barriers. Marius can leap and climb when the game wants you to, but he can't step over a single fallen beam if it isn't what developer Crytek had in mind.

Ugh....

I just watched a preview on IGN that was talking about how good this game is. I'm really starting to loose my trust for that site.

Just watched the IGN preview and yeah it looks really nice. But honestly, even that preview isn't all that glowing. More like, "I want to play more but I hope it gets better."

Nope. The text will be scathing, but that number will still be an 8.
So exactly like COD Ghosts the content of most all reviews eas that it was a mediocre, uninspired, and phoned in but very few gave it a number that marched what they said.

diverse is key here. It seems like you can button mash to finisher against every enemy type. maybe throw in a heavy that you need to guard break.

Pre-rendered cutscenes huh.
I called it... There were telling signs, like how when the cutscene ends there's a second or two of black screen pause before the gameplay begins, similar to how it happens in Uncharted games, although there they eventually cut that pause to a very quick minimum.

Wow and this doesn't surprise me. Gameplay was the one thing that looked suspect about Ryse. Graphically, incredible. Combat looked underwhelming compared to all of my favorite 3rd person action adventure combat games. Even the combat system in Deepdown looks more fun than this..

GAF is not going to be ready for review scores. If it ends up not being a good game I'm going to call people who were saying that Ryse is going to be the best exclusive by far
