12 minute Xbox One dashboard demo

I can see how it can appeal to certain groups of people, especially those who are casual and/or 'soft' core users who have other priorities other than just gaming.

I value extra hardware power for gaming and a cheaper price point more than the bells and whistles of this sort of interface, however. I can see Sony potentially offering a similar way of interacting with the interface when the PS Camera or a headset is attached, though. If Sony's UI remains simple and serviceable, that is good enough for me.

As someone who designs UI's for a living, it should be interesting to see how the consoles' UI's evolve over time.

That looked pretty damn cool tbh. The TV/App favorites on the guide would be pretty convenient.

You know gaf doesn't support HTML right?

I'm beginning to worry and wonder how Xbox One's TV and OneGuide will handle my TiVo with only OTA programming. At least TiVo has a network command option so I'm hoping one day for some awesome integration.

I can confirm it works as shown with my Tivo PremiereXL/Comcast cable and I can't think of a reason the OTA stuff (going into a Tivo) wouldn't work. It doesn't need network command, it can simply blast the IR port. And it gets programming data from the web, not the cable service.

I got uncomfortable every time Mehdi said magical.

We're just interested in snapping because supposedly it was crashing the system. Most of us figured it would be ironed out before launch, but still something to check.

If the rumors are to be believed this wasn't working even 6 weeks ago. Seems the day-one patch is required because they knew they had to get the systems distributed and would be working on the OS in the 11th hour.
Not our problem, but for this Holiday season the PS4 has the mindset of the gaming public as the "better console" and its because of the unclear message why would you need an xbox one of an other console.
By showing this months ago you can get people on your side to sell a xbox to.

Maybee... it wasn't ready? They showed a mockup, people freaked out- but the final product seems pretty close. Penello said a lot of questionable stuff, but he was right on re: the UI.
Not our problem
I think the reason they waited this long was because if they did a full video like this (they did show some of this at the reveal) and things shifted by the end the internetz would cry foul.
Reveal was all fake clicker in his hand etc.
Faked
Maybe given some of the rumors it just wasn't ready to show 6 months ago and it's all coming together now?
Understandable but still not our problem, but MS their loss for not showing it sooner everyone who mind have been conviened to buy an xbox now has a ps4 pre-order.
And most people go with ONE console a generation.
Is not too late, it's not like they have just 2 months to sell every console they will sell in the entire Xbox's life. For both consoles this is just the start, maybe someone would have preordered it if he/she saw this video a couple of months ago, but in the long term is not an issue, if the Xbox proves to be a worthy console then people will buy it eventually, if it doesn't people won't. Is that easy.
Sure understandable, but they are not in the spotlight for this season now because of missed opportunities like this.

The UI looks awesome. We are finally starting to see MS do what they do best. Make software and spend money to control the news cycle.

They don't have a move. MS is the software company and have just reminded everyone of that fact. Some shit you simply expect Microsoft to do better (or bigger and bolder) than a non-software company can, and they have (remaining bugs notwithstanding). So here we are with an extremely impressive UI and Kinect integration. There were tradeoffs involved, but it's clear that Microsoft has achieved their goal. "Good enough" NextGen gaming with enough shit to take over your living room entirely.

Suddenly the PS4 looks rather simplistic and limited.

Still on the fence about keeping the One pre-order...and more off than on it...but they've made their jack-of-all-trades box look pretty fucking good.

Im pretty sure that Sony is making a big "move" next week. And you say simplistic like its a bad thing, when in reality, simplistic wins over complex in a consumer market 8 times out of ten.

I don't think anyone was on the fence for either console waiting to see what the UIs were going to look like in action. Features sure, but most people aren't going to be swayed one way or the other by a walkthrough video unless they still haven't pre-ordered.

The fact is, pretty much everything from both sides have largely been mockups until recently because that's the nature of the software. They are working on these things all the way up to release day.

Cool, it works. Now Sony needs to show off theirs in detail too. Ps4 wont have as many features but we need to see that what they do have is smooth and responsive. Then again, we will probably be getting random YouTube videos in the coming days from ppl who got their systems early.

But with all the bad press and news that xbox had past 6+ months this could help soooo much.
And I think UI and functions of the console in general are far more inportant then you make it out to be.

Remember how the PS3 functions were in the beginning compared to xbox360/live but I know LOTS of people who bought an xbox and sticked with it this gen because of how that functioned.

I'm failing to see the prob. They showed a mockup of the features in may. They delivered. Whats the issue?

I'm sure they would have loved to show this working as is 6 months ago but that's unfeasible for either system. That's all I'm saying. It is unreasonable to expect this software to work in a way that's good enough to demo to the masses 6 months ahead of launch. That's not how software development works.

Frank, upgrade that to a Tivo Roamio yo. So much improvement over Premiere. ;-)

In the top comment, an MS employee says this:

Since I don't have cable TV, you can put any HDMI device into it :)

What does that mean? And what would happen if you put a PS4 into it? Would you unlock an Xzibit achievement?

It looks amazing. Stuff like this, and the games MS is lining up (e.g., Titanfall), are why it's such a goddamn bummer that they didn't go with a more powerful system.

These capabilities, coupled with the PS4's power, would be the perfect next generation system (though, for all we know, the PS4 UI is just as good).

That being said, I'm still waiting for CBOAT to show up like one of the four horsemen with a cryptic message about why the OS is still a disaster.

I've got about 25 hours into my DS4 and it hasn't shown and signs of wear.

The weird thing is...

My ONLY complaint with the DS4 is with that very spot on the one picture. For shooters I found that the bottom left part of the left thumb stick actually hurt my thumb after an hour or so of playing BF3 online. It happens everytime too...

I'm wondering if this might actually be a real thing if you put to much pressure on certain parts of the thumbstick ?

I guess we will find out soon.

DId you reply to the wrong thread?

Technically it's just switching inputs if I understand right so I think so. That would be funny if you could switch to the PS4 unit and get Xbox notifications on top of it.

This looks fantastic (if it really all works like this)

My biggest problem is:

SHOW THIS 6 MONTHS AGO !!!!
Seriously people have been begging for explanation how the Xbox one functions and why its better etc, and now 2 weeks out you show it.
THAT is to late.

Also for all international users everything tv and entertainment related is useless.

It wasn't ready six months ago. What would have them do? Show a faked video? Yeah, that works well around these parts.

It remains to be seen really, or if plugging it into the input would make gaming difficult due to the added lag, though I doubt that it would be noticeable really.
I wonder if you can record stuff from the HDMI in, that might be handy too.

Technically it should work, but you would have additional display lag due to the Xbox processing the PS4 output, so it wouldn't be perfect playing conditions.

I don't think so, it would turn the X1 into a full DVR, and I'm pretty sure it's not. Probably licensing issues.

Slick. Its SO strongly based on Win 8 though.
What happens if they (WinRT, Win8, WinPho) continue to under perform, a new boss takes over, and they launch Win9 in a few years and scrap metro entirely?
Those tiles aint lasting 8 years.

They'll just update the OS just like they did on 360

Hopefully it's good enough for single player stuff. I highly doubt your gonna be able to run a online shooter through the pass-through and be able to play without noticing a decent amount of lag, but i could be wrong.

Good to see MS finally showing why Kinect is useful. Some things that need it:

Voice commands - yes, anyone can use a mic for this, but it does 2 things that nothing else does: it focuses the audio mics on the person speaking (some sort of audio focusing tech they have talked about in the past) and it cancels out game sounds.

Skype uses skeleton tracking it to frame the person speaking (mentioned in the video)

using your hands to move around the UI (haven't seen this demo'd much, actually)

xbox fitness not possible without it

signing you in when it recognizes you

some other stuff i'm forgetting.. but you get the idea.. it's nice to see them finally showing why you might not want to put it in the closet first thing

Well the dashboard will be updated in the next 8 years anyway, just like we went from the blades to the current tiles on the 360.
I don't think tiles are going anywhere though, they're quite popular on the different devices, and the metro language is starting to influence many UI designs made by other companies than MS.

Then they will go back to using Blades? :p

Looks great and looking forward to picking it up with TitanFall, Forza and KI.

Bit concerned about the video capture time limits. The picture and picture is only 25 seconds? Why bother?

Slick stuff. I still want to know if it has Audio feedback so I could just plug my reciever into the xbone and run everything on top of the interface.

It's just for bite sized recording. For both PS4 and XBone, the integrated stuff was never a reasonable replacement for modern streaming setups.
