Shoot the Core! - Gaf Shoot ‘em Up (aka Shooter/SHMUP) Reference Thread

Mmm...Futari-level difficulty. That's how I like it.

If this is really going into operation in JP arcades I'll have to give it a spin.

Yeah, it's not DOJ or Ketsui level, those are bastard hard games. It took me about the same number of plays to reach the boss as it did in Futari so that's the best yardstick I could find. Stage 3 is probably the most challenging in my opinion, it's good at walling you in.

Man I am getting a serious Mars Matrix vibe from Neo XYX in its pacing and difficulty. No slowdown and just pure full blown frenzy there. Is it just me?

Looks like Triangle Service is bundling their Xbox 360 releases into a single box, Shooting Love Collection.

12/19, 8715 yens. I think it's time for me to finally to pull the trigger on this.

Saw that a few days ago on shmups. The big question is if both are going to be region-free since the first was locked and the second un-locked. Single disc and they should be unlocked. Two discs and there might be issues.

I'm double-dipping on this...just to show support. I gather it comes with a new OST too.

Yeah, I wouldn't hold my breath for SL200X being region-free. It's likely just the two original discs in one box.

I'm gonna side with both being region-free. Just makes sense given the lateness of the gen and the way most of the shooters have been, even if two discs. Now, if it is just a repackage of physical overstock then f that noise. Probably a re-pressing, even of the first disc, so a good chance to unshackle it.

It's already been confirmed so hope all you want.

Well, I don't really need hope. I've already got both of these titles and a few J-360s. But even the original title region-free would be nice for the rest of the world or folks wanting to pick it up. It is a pretty cool disc. Definitely the second is the better but would have been nice to have the first unlocked.

I'm just happy there's a good chance region locking shmups is a thing of the past starting this next generation. Of course they'll probably just release them digital only, in specific region marketplaces instead..

Guess we will know in the space of a year. IP-blocking and CC-blocking is way more malicious than region-blocking. Folks are picking the wrong fight.

Im about to get a PS3. Its a region free console from what I hear so what shmups exist for it period. Also please say Senko no Ronde Duo is on it. I dont own a foreign 360 to play it.

Speaking as a PS3 owner... sorry. :( Not much to choose from. There are a few (Ketsui, Mamorukun Curse, Under Defeat), but pretty minimal compared to the 360.

I'm with you. I was about to pick it up as well if it was region free. I just don't understand their thought process on this rerelease. Disappointing.

Is there a comprehensive list of shooters on 3DS? Any recommendations? I think I'll get Recca, but what else?

Oh damn,

I forgot to mention the Best Shooter on the system: Mii Force!

After collecting all of the Cave games on 360 and owning them for a good 6 months, I found myself reverting back to my favorites: Mushi Futari and Espgaluda 2 BL. I just can't get enough of them and my abandonment of the other titles led me to sell them all (minus SDOJ) so that SOMEONE would actually play them.

Also can't tell if my love for DDP SDOJ is just because of the new car smell or because I genuinely like it...

It's my favorite DDP just cause I can actually play it for score without going insane. They're all fun for survival but trying to score in the others just becomes too frustrating for me.

Course the real reason I'm posting is just to say that a few days ago I finally 1CC'd a game! Ketsui! And I did it again today! Took forever but I finally did it, about nine years of on and (mostly) off playing. I'm not sure whether to move on to something else or to try to push my score more or just clear somewhat consistently. Just broke 90M on the second clear, I think my realistic max is probably 95-100M without changing things up.

Mushihimesama Futari is just too good. It was my first Cave 1CC.

How could you let Muchi Pork/Sweets go though?

I can't agree more with this. Mushihimesama games just have a great feel to them. You don't know until you try it. Wish I had a Japanese 360 for Mushihimesama HD but at least I have the PS2 port.

Dammit y'all making me want Mushi. Anyone know if there's anything to watch out for with the PCBs? Like known common issues or different versions or battery crap or something?

Yeah, look out for a slightly washed out or dim image with colour balance issues. It seems to mostly affect Futari boards, at one point doing a quick check of all the ones showing up on Yahoo back when there were about 10 at any given time, it looked like about a third had the problem. It's been seen on other games too, but primarily Futari.

So I documented the problem and how to fix it

All these glorious videos of Resogun makes me want to play some good shmup. What do you guys think of Nano Assault on Wii U? Is it worth it? It looks like a pretty nice Super Stardust-like to me, I wish there was a demo.

Heh I remember that one now, guess that's another thing to worry about. The other thing that came to mind was an Astro City PSU issue with them but I can't tell if mine is affected. I have the small black one (model ending in X) while Arcade Otaku's page says it's the gray Y one that's known for having the problem.
Is this the Neo Geo one?
Yeah.

not to say this is even a port... but mars matrix over progear? mars matrix already has a port on dreamcast. progear (by CAVE) has never been ported along with ESP Ra.De., Dangun Feveron, and Ibara Kuro.

If it's just something additional and not an actual port, then I guess it doesn't really matter. If it's a port, it doesn't really affect me anyway..as I own the progear PCB and the mars matrix DC port.

I'd still rather people have the opportunity to play the one that hasn't been ported. I'm just trying to think of the others which is why I originally posted it in the CAVE thread :P

edit: speaking of, I actually busted it out last weekend after flipping my monitor back over for The Super Spy, and had one mediocre run in.

In the absence of Daimahoo, Pro Gear will have to do.

What did we even vote on?

some have speculated that it's a port, though it doesn't seem like something that big. Tho CAVE did base the Guwange port off a poll as did Rising Star with a few of their games. So... you never know.

not expecting Progear to win, but if it is a port.. I'm sure many will be disappointed if it turns out to be something that's already been ported (if not multiple times already like SF).

To be perfectly honest, I hesitated over a few of those fighters like Super Street Fighter II X or X-Men COTA. What can I say, Capcom fighters > Capcom shooters in my book. Also, I don't expect this to be anything other than a popularity pool.

true, but technically it's a CAVE shooter :P
but yea, it will end up being a popularity contest.. which is why I'm actually surprised a 19XX game has the top spot.
