Kotaku introduces the Amazon Playstation Network Store

that's what you get from beeing on work all day!!
awesome news! no credit card fuddeling, no pre paid card, just amazon!

when this comes over to old europe....i'm fucked!!
impulse buys left and right!
oh gaaaawwwd!

edit:

wait, you can also buy PS+ there?°?! AWESOME!

Everyone talking about how this is a win for gamers makes me very skeptical. How does Sony benifit from all this?

Lower prices --> More digital sales (and no reselling).

The more they can get people on-board with a digital future the easier it is for them to make money, IMO.

Yup, I'm actually thinking of selling my FIFA physical copy and getting the digital version.

It's my most played game anyway, and that price isn't bad at all.

Amazon got Naughty Dog to endorse this

We’re not the only ones excited, here’s what Eric Monacelli, Marketing Manager at Naughty Dog had to say:

I buy everything on Amazon… holiday gifts, birthday presents, books, clothes, tech, even toothpaste and often deodorant. So when I learned Jak, Daxter, Drake, Joel, and Ellie — all our incredible characters and their stories via our games and DLC would be available as PlayStation Store digital downloads on Amazon it just felt right.

You have to respect and think that any company with their own Easter egg is a perfect fit for all things Naughty Dog and PlayStation. If you’re not aware of what that means just visit www.relentless.com. You’ll love what you find.

So, as a consumer and fan of video games being accessible in as many ways as possible…Thank you Sony PlayStation and Thank you Amazon. The next generation is going to be relentless and awesome.

Am I the only one confused on how this is going to work?

By that, I mean is Amazon making exclusive contracts with publishers to get different pricing compared to the PSN store? It doesn't seem like Amazon could ever beat the actual console maker in price for digital copies unless something like that happened. In which case, why would Sony allow this?

I love competition, but when a company decides to just seemingly throw money away . . . I'm skeptical of what is actually happening.

Steam allows it with all of these 2nd market sites like GMG and Amazon selling Steam codes at cheaper prices with promotions versus the Steam store.

The more ways Sony can get people to buy games for their platform the better it is for them.

This is incredible news.

thank you for this gif.

It wouldn't work any differently from Amazon selling Steam codes, for example. Amazon has a sale, and because they're such a popular outlet, they can move a lot more units than other outlets. So they either take the discount out of their cut (and make more because of volume), or they make a deal with the publisher to get a better cost (also due to volume, of course), or both.

It makes plenty of sense, for everyone involved.

Blog post says stuff (including PS4) will only be available Day 1. No pre-order.

Looks like pre-order (and pre-load) are exclusive to Sony's PSN Store for now.

Day one as in console release... or date of game release? The stores are all selling certain PS4 games... so shouldn't Amazon?

While I guess this is pretty cool, I would be 10x happier if this came to Amazon Japan. As it is, I guess its fine for the occasional discount vs the PSN store, but if there's no discount I don't see what the big deal is. Granted, I live in the US, so I guess this is a bigger deal to people outside the US (for some odd reason).

i think what he means is the digital version of PS4 games should be available on the PS4 console release, codes won't work I suppose

the release date of ALL of the PS4 items is technically 11/15. Sony just dropped the street date embargo for retailers on all products except the system itself.

Just saw this and wow, this is huge. Alternative storefronts? Wow.

Is Last of Us's season pass worth picking up for $15?

This is something that MS should have done when they intruduced Xbone DRM.

This wouldn't be necessary under MS's original xbone policy because all retail games gave you a digital license just with a different installation medium. Effectively every retail store was an alternative digital storefront.

Also, they did this with Amazon a few years ago but it didn't last long. Shame, because they had some good deals. Glad Amazon is back on board for the PS4.

If competitor digital storefronts are allowed... did anyone else immediately think Steam? What if... oh god. I need this. Amazon is a great start though. I fucking love Amazon. In Canada though :(

PSN games on Steam? Not without a complete change in steam (aka no)

This is truly Amazing. A BIG step forward for the digital only future of console gaming! I can't wait for the rebates and sales!

I'm confused as to why Sony is allowing a direct competitor for digital prices? I never checked out Amazon digital game prices but judging by the reactions it must be good.

Amazon will bring in a huge number of sales which Sony will get a share of no matter the pricing.

It's good news because it doesn't make anything worse, only potentially better.

I think all the people shouting their enthusiasm for digital must really hate swapping disks.

I will survive that chore, somehow, and keep reselling my used games. I am not wealthy and I do enjoy money :)

So will they use PSN prices or have their own sales and discounts? Could be really interesting if it were the latter. A lot like PC gaming where you can buy from multiple digital retailers.

So much amazon credit. Not that it matters, it was easy to turn that into psn credit. Hopefully we will see some real deals on the digital front now (aside from ps+ discount offerings).

If this means that there will be competition in the digital PS4 space then it is such a huge win for gamers. Now all Amazon need to do is look at a map and find Europe :P.

QUESTION:

People have mentioned that you can buy stuff off Amazon using a fake American shipping address and a foreign card. I know this is true, since I've done it for an online games sale (pretty sure they were Steam keys).

BUT

Is there a possibility that if someone were to use this method for the Amazon PSN Store, and Amazon got wise to it, they could digitally remove/void your games? Does anyone know the answer/details to this yet?

Basically this seems like a greal deal (the B2G1 especially, considering that's not available in Canada for PS4 games), but I don't want to go through with it only to lose out on my purchases down the road.

edit: I always make the last friggin post on a page..

errr you buy a code to use on the PSN , don't think Amazon can say to Sony to remove it from your download list
