iPad Mini Retina - A Small Breath of Air (Out Now! Limited Supply!)

Goddammit, didn't realize they were ready for pickup today. Just got a couple more for pickup. Will return the ones that ship in next week.

Some stores in DC area still have them.

I think the size/surfaces are basically identical to the first-gen Mini. So, two questions:

1. How prone to scratches/scuffing is the rear/sides/bezel? (My wife has a third-gen iPad. Same materials and dispositions?)

2. Any case suggestions for the Mini? I don't want anything crazy expensive or super big. I'm primarily looking for something to minimize aesthetic wear, so that I maximize my return when I resell in a couple of years.

if you are remotely thinking of resaleing. get a case.

Got this one for my ipad mini 1st gen

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0083OXSBS/?tag=neogaf0e-20

steal of a deal. has a 'smart cover' built in, and the back piece is quite sturdy.

As soon as I saw that they were available for store pickup today, I went to cancel my order. Unfortunately, it changed to Prepared for Shipment at the same exact time I tried to cancel. It actually still said Processing when I hit cancel.

Anyway, I ended up ordering another one for pickup and just got home with it. Might throw up a video for my tech-related YouTube channel, since I haven't been uploading much lately, but I no longer have a mountable camera, only my iPhone.

yep, apparently a lot of apple stores around here got them instock this afternoon. ordered a second one.

You can return an unopened ipad ordered online (no engraving) to retail apple stores right?

Yup, no issue there. Might also be able to make some money selling it, depending on supply, if that's your thing.

true!

Gonna think the ipad air being $500 will put a ceiling on scalping prices though even though form factor yada yada. But ipad mini 1st gen sold quite well, so there might be a big demand.

hmmm.

I sold a couple of iPad Minis last year. Think I made a very small profit though. Didn't plan on selling them, but wasn't happy with the screen.

Just noticed what appears to be a small piece of dust under my screen. I really don't feel like going back to the store. I have another one coming in the mail, but it would be nice to set this up and be done with it. The one coming might also be flawed.

Is that showing up on their in stock checker on their site? Or are they just in store. If so, is it just 16 and 32 gig or are 64 and 128 gig in stock too?

purchases made after November 1st can be returned as late as January 7th
so you have lots of time to try to sell it for profit or if you bought an iPad air and the mini turns out to be amazing you have lots of time to swap it easily

So I recently returned my original air as I found a deal which was £50 cheaper and received the item today, it's still sealed... However the new mini is really tempting BUT I don't want to return it from the online seller I bought i from, isme, it was such a pain to get this item from them and their customer service is terrible. Would Apple accept a sealed ipad without receipt even if you did not buy it form them in exchange for store credit? Do I have any options besides ebay? In the UK btw.

not in the US (only online and retail apple store purchases). Their store page has details.

Is it just me or is there almost no hype behind the iPad Mini Retina? It's practically what everyone wanted from the original iPad Mini. Maybe the $80 price jump is too much?

I think its mostly due to the soft launch and lack of reviews

The price jump put a crimp in its hype for sure. Also, Apple was non-committal with the release date, which didn't help. This super stealth launch makes it worse. I'm sure it will sell well over the holidays, but the $400 price point is going to keep some budget conscious consumers away (or push them towards the non-retina mini).

The Retina iPad mini scored a 1390 on the single-core test and a 2512 on the multi-core test, which was similar to the iPhone 5s score of 1399/2523, and lower than the iPad Air at 1466/2856. Compared to the 261/493 score of the original mini, the Retina iPad mini marks an incredible boost in performance speeds.

It is unclear why the mini is clocked at 1.3Ghz instead of 1.4Ghz like the iPad Air, but in terms of real world usage, users are unlikely to notice the small speed differences. It is possible that Apple chose the lower clock speed in the iPad mini to improve overall battery life or to reduce heat within the smaller chassis.

Apple's Retina iPad mini went on sale last night at midnight and is currently still available from the Apple Online Store and in Apple retail locations via Personal Pickup.

Not sure why it's clocked down from the Air other than battery life.

Just picked up my retina mini from the Mississauga square one apple store. Shit was like a big secret, they're only selling them in store to reservations. The thing is beautiful. Dat screen banderas, gif

have you owned a retina iPad previously?
I'm wondering if the higher ppi is apparent when compared to the larger models

Isn't the PPI on the Retina Mini the exact same as the iPhone's? If you have a retina iPhone you can always use that for reference.

EDIT: Double-checked. 326 PPI, same as a retina iPhone. iPad Air is 264.

My BB said they wouldn't have it until black Friday, which I don't believe. I'll keep my Apple.com order I guess,.

Our local Best Buy is tracking their shipment for tomorrow here in Michigan.

Wife managed to reserve one just as 2 guys showed up to buy one after being told on the phone the store had them available. lol

Just grabbed a 16GB at the local Best Buy....upgrading from 64GB iPad 1 (which I'm definitely keeping too). Based on my usage patterns I think 16GB will be more than enough for me. Paying much more than 400 for a mini seemed silly to me.

If you're checking a BB, have them check thoroughly. The outer box looks exactly the same as the 1st gen except for in small print on the back where it indicates it is retina. They didn't even know they had received the retina and the new ones had somehow already gotten mixed in with the old ones and the kid had to hunt through all of them to check the fine print to find mine.

I'm in the UK and I can't find any sort of reservation / pick up route, even with the iPad in my basket. Am I right to think that it's only possible to try your luck in-store here? I know some people have them already.
