Playstation 4: The Little Things

So for everyone who's playing with the PS4 today, what are some of the neat little details you noticed about the system? Stuff you hadn't known before the launch.

Some things I've noticed:
- Motion control on the keyboard (clicking in R3). Actually works really well.
- Moving the on screen keyboard with the sticks. Can you do this on the PS3? I don't remember.

One thing I couldn't figure out: Does the touch pad not work for the OS keyboard? I assumed it would.

So just started really digging in to stuff. Whaddya got?

Regarding the touchpad for the keyboard, I couldn't figure it out either. Isn't that how yosp opened gamescom?

Still two weeks until the UK launch, but I have a question. Does the PS4 keep track of total playtimes for your games?

For some reason I'm always slightly obsessed with that statistic. I love how Steam/3DS/Wii U keep track of your playtime.

Can we talk about the little things that bother us, too?

- The eight little loady bars that have to pass when I press to download something on the PlayStation Store.

- No sorting options in the library.

- No sorting options in trophies.

- Library groups apps with games.

When multitasking between an app and a game, double clicking the ps button brings you between the game and the app without going to the home menu.

I'm in love with the controller. I hated the sixaxis/dual shock 3. The new controller is fancy and feels great and makes previous game controllers feel cheap in comparison.

I haven't loved a controller this much since the n64 controller.

Can someone tell me more about the talking controller? It sounds like a great addition at providing an additional source of sound apart from your normal speakers.

If used correctly, this could be a great feature.

This here. Feels so good

I'm in love with the little huge thing called Twitch. The ability to watch/stream from the dash in a flash, is amazing.

I think the controller speaker sounds like a high quality phone call. It's still obviously mechanized, but not in a way that sounds completely terrible. When contextualized in an audio log or a computer voice or something like that it sounds 100% perfect. If you push it farther than that it, it sounds cheap.

It's much better than the Wii controllers, maybe slightly worse than a DS or PSP speaker.

The first time you suck up relics in Knack or hear the mechanised voice in Resogun will make you feel all sorts of giddy. Lots of interesting things for developers to do with that controller...

Yep! This is pretty much the only thing bothering me right now, we need categories for these things, I dont want to have to slide through 15 things to get to my game. Games folder, Apps folder...etc

Also, why can't I play videos through the USB anymore :(

I can see people online on PS3 and message them but they can't see that I'm online on my PS4. Says message sent from a device other than a PS3 system.

So I'm loving the controller after hating every othe Sony controller. So happy.
Also like the motion tracking with the keyboard.

Is the audio like the way it does on the Wiimote...or better? Wiimote was great for sound effects but long sentences (like No More Heroes) and it was very low quality.

Well shit, answered. Thanks.

Negative - as feared, the controller light annoyingly creates a big reflection in the middle of my glossy TV.

Going to have to tape it up or learn to play all games holding it facing down.

If you go into recent players met... it breaks it down by every 3 minutes. So all you have to do is take note of the time and it sorts them that way and by what game you met them in. Very cool.

Does it at least show everything you've ever purchased, regardless of whether it's currently installed or not?
Yes.

I can't imagine them not adding filters within the first year. It's pretty much a personal page pulled straight from the PS3/PS4 Store without the filters.

A Shining Example
Can you not buy PS3 or Vita games through the PS4 interface or do I have to boot those up? I'm mainly thinking for PS Plus purposes.

Right now you can only view PS4 content when you browse the store. Gonna have to stick to using the SEN Store for PS+ content for the time being.

If you click R3 while the on screen keyboard is open you can move the cursor with your controller. I think that's what Shu did because the touchpad doesn't work in the web browser.

Yesss, finally they show everything I own regardless of it its downloaded. Beautiful thing about Steam that I miss on every single other download service.

But really, how can there not be sorting options? Honestly, my biggest gripe about the PS3 was that sorting was so limited. Oldest, newest, and most recently played. How about an alphabetical?

Sony nailed it down hard with this console. The controller is a massive improvement (possibly the best controller ever made), the hardware is sleek, fast, multitasking is as fast as my PC's, the way the interface looks, feels, and reacts is just superb.

I felt like PS3 and its interface looked sleek, and felt clunky/slow. It was a half-baked design. PS4 gets rid of every bit of clunkiness and streamlines things even further.

I love it. It's weird to think that just a few years ago I preferred my 360 and PS3 had to grow on me, but Sony has turned things around massively. Big props to them.

Trophy rarity is pretty awesome. Especially going back and looking at the rarity of PS3 games.

Syncing was also super fast. Like 2 seconds and I could still view my trophies while it synced.

Not being able to pause downloads or set priority is my pet peeve right now. I'm on a really crummy connection and the system was designed to just simultaneously download everything you throw at it instead of limiting itself to only 1 like PS3/360.

These aren't a dealbreaker to me, but I hope they add some sorting options in a firmware update. I'd like gametracking similar to the 3ds as well.

This should be pointed out, According to the FCC filing for both the PS4 Dev Kit (https://apps.fcc.gov/oetcf/eas/reports/ViewExhibitReport.cfm?mode=Exhibits&RequestTimeout=500&calledFromFrame=N&application_id=435177&fcc_id=AK8DUTD1000) & the retail PS4 (https://apps.fcc.gov/oetcf/eas/reports/ViewExhibitReport.cfm?mode=Exhibits&RequestTimeout=500&calledFromFrame=N&application_id=583848&fcc_id=AK8CUH100C1), the PS4 is supposed have Bluetooth 4.0 in addition to Bluetooth 2.1 +EDR. On both of those links, the info is in the last .pdf file called "FCC 15C Report". It should be on page 5.

Now that it's confirmed that the wireless radio in the PS4 is a "Marvell Wireless Avastar 88W8797", we can 100% confirm that the PS4 has Bluetooth 4.0. Here's a link for the .pdf file info on the Marvell Wireless Avastar 88W8797 SoC:

I wonder why Sony doesn't list Bluetooth 4.0 as a tech spec feature on the PS4.

I love how we can change our real name to whatever we want.

The console seems to be built for minimizing and running multiple apps/functions at the same time and it shows because I'm constantly surprised at how smooth it all is.
