Playstation 4: The Little Things

To be fair, I really do enjoy the console at present. I won't go into all the issues with the system, as there are quite a few. Some of the ones listed do irk the daylights out of me and are just not very well thought out design wise (but look great when at arms length.)

I'm really hesitant to judge the PS4 right now, because for all that the rumors said that MS was scrambling to get their system into a usable state by launch, the PS4 currently feels like a lot was pushed off/sacrificed/left awkward in the name of getting things done by launch. Aside from the coming later stuff that we know about, things like the OS behavior during the SEN issues that you mentioned that just feel like unfinished. Like, I honestly can't believe Sony designed the OS intentionally knowing it would behave this way, and it feels more like it's something they know isn't a game-breaker so they let it slide for now and will fix later. The joys of launch, and all.

I'm really enjoying my time with the system so far, and the only thing I think I'm going to find frustrating that I don't think will eventually be fixed is the lack of a USB port on the back and that's only because my USB flash drive is one of those rugged all-weather ones and is too chunky to fit in the USB ports we have.

The controller is such a huge step up from the DS3; it's probably my favorite improvement so far. I will love it even more once they let me turn the stupid light bar off.

Trophy syncing seems to be much faster now. The UI is simple, clean and fast; I like it but I really hope they allow custom themes down the road.
Oh, and the PSN store finally operates without any slowdowns!

The messaging system is really sweet, pretty much like iMessage. Speaking of that, you can send voice messages to people from the iPhone app!

The controller is so much more awesome than I expected it to be. It is literally nearly perfect.

Both the controller and the console are great looking in person. I am also impressed by the ease of use of the OS. I didn't think it could get simpler than the cross-media-bar, but having visibility into an additional layer down in the taxonomy of content is fantastic. The OS is also very snappy, which is nice. Having downloads simultaneously downloading and installing is a godsend.

And the games that I have played are fantastic thus far: Killzone SF (the reviewers most definitely low-balled this game) and NBA2k14 (best basketball game I've ever played gameplay-wise and graphically). I have yet to play my other game, Battlefield 4, but I am sure that it will be just as awesome (especially multiplayer if I can access it).

Haven't had a chance to play Resogun, Contrast, or Warframe yet, either. Very exciting. Best experience I've had with a console launch yet, and I've been through most of them.

Gripe: Why do installs still take a million years? I've already downloaded the game from PSN. What is taking so long?

Nice: Switching between apps/games/os is very quick, very easy. Wasn't expecting that really.

Few of the things I noticed

- any 3 prong headphones can be used as a headset plugged into the dualshock 4 I'm using my Kunai headset to stream game audio and chat it has a better mic!
- you can send voice messages and pictures now
- os is very fast
- remote play is allot better then it was on psp
- I think your profile is saved to your dual shock every time I plug it in to charge it brings up my profile

while it won't top the gyro keyboard i like the idea of using your mobile phone or tablet to type when prompted to use the ps4's Virtual KB.

The HDMI Connect function is kinda neat. It synced up nicely with my Samsung LED. It automatically switches the TV input over to the PS4 when you turn t he console on, and switches back when you power it down or go into suspend mode.

Yes, and it also wakes up the console from standby when you switch inputs.

Does anyone know if the PS4 browser supports the HTML5 Gamepad API?

Can someone please go to this link with the PS4 browser, and get back to me with the results. I really want to know:

I don't get my PS4 for another 7ish weeks. PLEASE can someone test this for me, it's eating me alive.

Might not be the best topic for this, but I have a question about PS+ and I was hoping somebody could answer me. On PS3 you have to actually 'download' a PS+ freebie for it to show up in your collection. After a few months, both my backlog and my HDD filled up, so now I purchase and start the download on the freebies, but I then manually cancel the download so I can still access them at a later time. Is that still how it works or does the PS4 know how long you've been a PS+ member and update your library accordingly?

Can you set up multiple accounts with different region IDs in the same way you could on the PS3?
Anyone? And can you access different region stores with those accounts? Also, is there any way to tell which account you're using now when you're offline, or do you have to memorize who's User 1, User 2 and so on?

Personally for me, the ps4 launch has been just as unpolished as the wiiu launch was. There are numerous problems I have had throughout the day. Still, like the wiiu, I do enjoy the console overall

Honestly the last launch i can remember without issues was probably ps2 or dreamcast. This is par for the course.

Why are you reading my tag instead of the title of my post?
Quick question - can you now change your audio output (headphones) without exiting to XMB?
Yes? I can access that option set without needing to Suspend the game. I'm just going to assume yes.
How is the store ? I hate how even with my really good internet connexion, browsing the store on PS3 is a chore
When everything is working fine. It's butter. A tiny itty bit of jank but, it's much much better.

Also, I nominate Sound Shapes for the "Best Use Of The DS4 LightBar" Award. It pulses to the beat of all of the music underlying the game. And it changes colors based on the background. And flashes Red when you die. If devs use it right, it'll add just that bit more that makes it all more memorable.

There's an option for the controller volume in the system menu.

Sounds pretty annoying. It should calibrate the volume via listening to the main speakers' volume if the bundled mic or the Camera is plugged in or something. That'd also automatically mute it when you are using headphones, don't know how that is handled now.

That's a lot of complication for a non existent problem.

Is there performance issues when the game installs while you play, such as stuttering or slowdown. And after the game installs does the system sound quieter?

Thanks.

Regarding the touchpad for the keyboard, I couldn't figure it out either. Isn't that how yosp opened gamescom?

Nope, he was using motion typing. I thought for sure you would be able to type using the touch pad, but doesn't seem like it.

PS4 hasn't launched worldwide yet so I don't think you can even access other stores lol.

Oh yeah, didn't think about that at all. But it'd still be nice to know about other region accounts and how to recognize which one you're using if you're offline.

Cool. Used to annoy me on PS3 when you had turtlebeaches plugged in but forgot. You'd boot the game, realise there were no sounds and have to boot to XMB to change it to go through the HDMI again.

How does that work, you flick the controller in the direction of the letter? I thought it would be like SWYPE on a tablet.

Is anyone having install problems? I have the upgrade from PS3 version of Ghosts with the disc in the drive and it says ready to install (I opted to dl the MP first). It says "installing application" with the loading circle spinning and I can't tell if anything is happening because it just stays there spinning and I can't do anything else. A progress bar would have helped. Anyone experiencing this?

Trust no one. Eat steaks.
Can we talk about the little things that bother us, too?

- The eight little loady bars that have to pass when I press to download something on the PlayStation Store.

- No sorting options in the library.

- No sorting options in trophies.

- Library groups apps with games.

Sony need an excuse to add updates each time they want to increase the security. "Here are a few new features while we beef security loop holes or track your pirated movies played on Playstation".

The stand/grip that comes with the camera is pretty slick. Though I'm not using it, I thought it was pretty neat. But to expand in that, the way you can angle the camera minus the stand is also damn sleek.

The blue LED light from the controller *does* reflect on my TV. It's a little thing, but it's annoying...

It happens no matter how my controller is inclined, though it's mostly only noticeable on dark scenes.

Had these exact same issues; otherwise, I'm thrilled with it.

Does anyone have the Sony MDR-1R headphones? I'd like to know if the inline mic works on the DS4.

Would be very happy if that is the case.

I've got a question if anybody can help. Can you NOT play audio through the speaker on the controller? Like can you play it through a headset? Don't want to wake anybody up at night you see.
