The most positive thing I can ever say about Korra is, at least she looks cool, especially with her hair like it currently is.

I'm watching the finale now. The last two episodes were pretty great. But I agree about Unalaq, what a boring villain.
 
Unalaq is kind of ridiculous with how OP he is. Lol I mean, he's more powerful than the Avatar?

"Well I'm the old Avatar and my era isn't over yet".

whoa I was just about to watch tonight's episodes since I missed the first episode and I find out the finale is up too?! sweet. Did they explain why they put up the finale online first? First time I've ever seen a finale up a week early.

I think Nick's servers are dying haha. The stream is so laggy for me.
 
Finale was a really good watch with some questionable writing and some downright silly fights. But in terms of the actual episodes themselves, very entertaining. Fantastic animation. Just two great episodes. But yeah, these writers sure don't know how to write themselves out of corner.

Wow. The final run of episodes of this season basically redeem the whole show for me. I have some hope for the next now.
 
Great action (on par with the best of ATLA and Korra Book 1), but an absolutely nonsensical plot, awful dialogue, and atrocious handling of themes. Characterization has certainly improved since the first half of the series and we did see some development here though, I have to admit that.
 
The second half of this season can't redeem the first half for me, because the first half will still be terrible when you watch it episode to episode. Also nothing in the back half really retroactively ties in themes or something deeper that we didn't know about.

But I will say, the second half was infinitely better. And in that sense, it redeems the show in that it at least became entertaining again. It was a good recovery and lead in for Book 3 for sure. And the ending made some much needed changes to the Avatar universe that could make the world interesting again.
 
Yeah, the latter part of this season has been great. It sucks that they are attached to some of the worst episodes from the series. I'm going to give it some time, but I do want to watch all of AtLA and TLoK to really get a fresh sense of the Avatar world. I think this season may be better as a whole.

I think you got to something closer to my idea of redeem below the part I'm quoting here. But basically what it comes down to is that these episodes make having this series at all worthwhile for me. Actual delving into the spiritual nature of the world is the only thing in Korra that's grabbed my interest, and this did it in spades.

Also, though I'm sure you're aware of this, I didn't say it redeemed the first half of the season. All of Korra pretty much up to the Beginnings two parter has been varying degrees of not good to me.

I was just speaking in general. But I agree with what you guys are saying in the larger context. I'm just disappointed that I dislike the first half so much. I would like to go back and re-watch this season. But I feel like the only way to do it is to start at Beginnings.

But yeah, the more important point is that, the season ended strong and most importantly, set up a good lead in for the last two books. It changed the status quo, and put forth necessary changes that was desperately needed to the shows world. I might not have been 100% a fan of how they got to this change, but I'll take it. Plus it was still damn entertaining.

Severs are getting hammered, they'll get better as more people finish streaming.

Enjoyed the season overall - they saved it with the second half!

It'll be interesting to see where they go from here...
 
So basically, Korra's now the first in a new line of Avatars. I wonder what that means for the effectiveness of her Avatar State.
 
Just finished the rest of the series (missed the east coast airing so I had to watch the west coast which finished right when the last two went up online.

First, 11th and 12th

Nuktuk along with Lin was the worst part of the season for me. Lin blandly admitting Mako was right was terrible. That said, Bolin's fight against Varrick's assassins was amazing one of my favorite fights of the season. Speaking of favorite fights, Korra's father vs Unalaq was probably my favorite fight in all of Legend of Korra. The way he just punched Unalaq's attacks was incredible. Varrick kind of went out lame by just giving back everything he took (which I assumed he already sent to the south) but meh. The aerial fight was sweet. Wasn't sure how Bolin would be able to do anything but planting explosives was cool. Bumi saving everyone was hilarious, although it was a little weird the spirits never attacked anyone else and only him. Most people assumed Unalaq wanted to be a dark avatar and that's exactly what happened. His choice of wanting to merge with Vatu more or less only for power was stupid.

Episodes 13 and 14

Seeing Xiao again was a pleasant surprise. Tenzin's revelation with Aang didn't make much sense but whatever. Eska and Bolin were about the only funny parts of these two episodes. Nothing about Jinora in these episodes made any sense to me (where she went, how she found Rava inside Vatu, etc). Some of the more recent fights have been compared to Dragonball Z and Korra's vs Unalaq/Vatu was basically DBZ in a nutshell. Both went super saiyan, then Unalaq went SSJ2. Then Korra went SSJ2 and in a way Spirit Bombed Unalaq/Vatu into oblivion. Korra leaving the portals open was odd but I suppose with Vatu gone that none of the spirits are corrupted, although a bunch were assholes in Wan's time so that'll probably have a big role in seasons 3 and 4. Korra and Mako not getting back together was surprising but it'll likely continue again next season.

The season really picked up late but the finale was disappointing compared to the previous 2 (11 and 12). May have gotten some of the last 4 episodes mixed with each other but meh.
 
There was a lot more good than bad, but man that bad really sticks out. Overall this run of four episodes was pretty good, and redeems this season.
 
Book 1 is better than Book 2 imo just because it was more consistent in quality each episode. The second half this book was pretty good but as someone said it earlier it doesn't make up for the lows of the first half. Having said that I can't wait for Book 3 and to buy the blu ray of 2

I know that I've done a lot of complaining. There's a lot to complain about as we know. But regardless of everything that was wrong with the season and all that I've said, I still enjoyed it a lot, and I'm up for a season 3. The show isn't perfect, but its a good animated series. Sometimes it's even pretty spectacular, but it suffers as well from time to time. Its worth the watch though.

too few episodes for the story they wanna tell. Liked it but less than season 1.

I think it was a uneven season with a particularly horrible start but the second half of the season really turned it around for me to more than make up for the earlier episodes
This season has some of the best episodes of the show so far but it also has some of the worst

A disaster.

I loved ATLA for its strong storytelling and its characterization. Season Two of Korra fails on both fronts. I had hoped that it would redeem the lackluster and unearned ending that crippled a promising Season One. I wanted characters I can care about, a well-paced plot that makes sense and some strong recurring themes in a consistent universe. I didn't get any of that this season.

Worse than Korra Book 1, which I already didn't like that much. Book 1 had a strong start, an engaging premise, and an interesting villain (until the end). Book 2 was all over the place and its earliest episodes were easily the worst. There was too much cutting back and forth between a massive cast that didn't spend much time together, and crucial characters would just disappear for half a dozen episodes at a time. "Beginnings" was good, and there were some really nice bright spots in the last third or half of the season, but it failed to come together in the finale (not that this surprises me). They tried to do even more than Book 1 but still with too little time. Also, Korra was insufferable for much of the season.
 
I agree with you Pein. There should have been more episode for this type of story. I really liked the Vahtu/Rava storyline but like the Amon one, bad development dampened the conclusion. Lot of petential in both seasons of Korra,but the series suffers from bad writing. I also agree, Hamlet, that the second half of season 2 was much much stronger than the first and it redeemed the season somewhat for me, because I was really frustrated with the first half.

You're right Bork. The storytelling and characterization skills are lost save for a few moments, but I think it some to do with how short and self contained these seasons are. But overall, downgrade in writing. Will you be willing to watch a season 3?

Jacob, I agree that there was just too much going on. I'm not sure why the writers would make that decision. It seems like the number 1 mistake of a novice. Not being able to cut back. I would think that the writers were more experienced than that. Too many characters and all doing something mostly unrelated. Korra was difficult to deal with but she did get better and kinda grew as a character. I think the way she let Mako go at the end was meant to show that. I can mostly forget about how horrible her character was if her progression last and she doesn't revert back in season 3.

I think I'll watch because:

1) I'm invested in the Avatar universe. Its mythology is quite unique.
2) As a writer interested in storytelling, I get a lot out of analyzing what works and what doesn't, and the franchise has provided some brilliant examples of both.
3) I am slightly optimistic that they have learned to dial back on the ambition for Season 3 to fit the minseries format. Coming off of Book 1, they didn't really have time to incorporate feedback into Book 2.
 
Hm. There were quite afew holes that dampen the finale for me. There were ideas I liked, moments I loved (
that mushroom, omg
), but a lot of clumsy execution that didn't make it gel the way it should. I guess that's a lot of this season, frankly, and it's sad.

Final four episodes were totally gorgeous nonetheless.
 
I posted this in the finale thread, but I suppose this goes here too.

There are a few givens that hold for the Avatar series, ATLA included-- rampant deus ex machina being the most blatant. With those in mind, these last four episodes (as well as Beginnings) redeemed Korra in my eyes, after having a terrible first season finale and second season. Despite the loss of the past, the episodes showed that Korra learned enough from it to surge forward and create a new spiritual age.

She is the last, and the first, Avatar. And like her first words said, we have to deal with it. With 214, she finally earned the eponymous legend status that had previously been inexplicable.

That was a great finale. Great action, great music. The direction they decided to go has me more interested in the Avatar universe. The
deus ex machina
isn't any different than the one in The Last Airbender and frankly, it doesn't really bother me at all. It's a kid show after all. I'm not expecting Breaking Bad levels of writing. I was greatly entertained and that's what matters to me.
