What is Gametrailers place in the Industry?

I like their reviews and it's where I go to watch angry video game nerd. Although he doens't really do those anymore

They got Kyle Bossman, and to be fair their reviews have been very good since they changed chief or w/e that guys position was.

To be serious for a moment, Gametrailers is like taking the concept that started Sci-Fi, or MTV, and actually be about the industry they supposed to cover instead of crappy reality TV that Sy-Fi and MTV became.

- The Final Bosman
- Pop Fiction
- Retrospectives

That's about it for me. That said, all three of those are excellent.

They are a games journalism site like anything else, but with a greater emphasis on showing the games off over telling.

They are still rather small though. Only about 8 people make up the editorial team now, which is why they don't get around to a lot of smaller games for review and are inconsistent on reoccurring shows.

But they are great people. Ryan Stevens is crazy good at his job and the rest are just passionate gamers. Watch invisible walls too, there is some definite harsh critique in there. Unedited too.

I've been watching GT since they came out in the mid 2000s and really love how they've evolved over the past few years. The site went from only being worth reviews and the odd Screwattack video to now boasting great content like GTTV, Invisible Walls, Pop Fiction, Previews (although these are way too infrequent), Top 10's, and Retrospectives. I'd say it's my second most trust gaming website behind neogaf and I can't wait to see what the future holds for them.

Honestly GT is good for the industry. I know that Geoff makes these marketing deals and product placements etc but honestly everyone in the media does it. GT shows like Final Bosman, Bonus round are very good and VGA has honestly not disappointed me when it comes to game reveals in the recent years. So I'm not sure if I can say one specific thing about what their place is but I think they just have one

As a site, they're like any other site, but they have the most comprehensive coverage of most gaming events, so they're useful throughout the year. The video player is trash, but the mobile app is quite useful to watch their original programming (Final Bosman and Pach Attack only).

And they do have some other good original content as well (Pop Fiction/Retrospectives), but those aren't released too often.

Their place was originally in their namesake. They used to be one of the few places where you could get a lot of high quality direct feed videos of games. That's obviously not true anymore.

I never much liked the other content they produce, but I admit it's not as bad as it used to be.

I like their reviews. They're very cold and calculated and tend to showcase the game with little fluff. Brandon Jones' voice adds a lot to it. I feel like they should invest more in in-depth analysis rather than community stuff no one will see or me-too metered reviews.

Ah, yes. I remember waiting for an HQ trailer to download. Good times.

With the Spike TV integration, they're about as closest to "PR" as I would define video game journalism.

They're great when they have exclusive game announcements (most recently, Uncharted PS4) at events like the VGAs, but they're not very useful for hard-hitting investigative journalism.

For that reason, it's not a place that I can trust with review scores either. Nothing against the review staff...I just can't trust reviews from websites that are so high-profile (owned by a corporation, has promotional deals with companies, etc.)

However, I enjoy the site for its high-quality original content. There are a lot of great features as well.

They have their place, but I don't see it lasting if they keep that crap bit-rate. All their next-gen footage looks current gen on their video players.

The website itself is average video game website. They are owned by Viacom though and integrated with Spike so they get a bump from that with all of the TV stuff.

Yeah, stuff like Timeline, Pop Fiction, Pach Attack, Kyle Bossman, and all the licensed shows like HAWYP, and Angry Video Game Nerd is why GT exists. The production values of their shows is simply better than other game websites, like IGN and Gamespot, and a big part of that is because they're owned by Viacom, a huge multimedia corporation. They simply know how to do this kind of stuff.

Don't use it as much as I used to, but it's something I regularly check. Their video reviews really are top notch too.

If GT didn't exist there would be a void in the gaming world for me, that sounds over the top I know.

They do serve a purpose in the industry, kind of an Entertainment Tonight-like outlet that reaches a wider audience than most niche sites and helps legitimize gaming those people's eyes.

Also, Kyle Bosman delivery service.

I personally view Game Trailers as a site reminiscent of IGN, video wise, especially now that IGN is doing videos of their podcasts (LONG overdue). Good reviews, good shows, good entertainment. I tune in.

Still, by far the best internet gaming show is still Up At Noon on IGN. But most GT programs are entertaining as well.

I really like gametrailers. They have a bunch of cool original content on their site. Stuff like The Final Bosman, Retrospective series, Timeline, Pop-Ficiton, Mega64, etc.

They do some really entertaining stuff.

I dunno, but I like the voice of the dude who reads their reviews/narrates their features. I just wish they did more Retrospectives.

Gametrailers runs this shit. They have the highest quality everything.

The thing that amazes me is that their reviews don't seem more biased with all the dough they must be getting flashed.

I get the impression that they don't get that much traffic. Is that the case? They always seem to be desperate for more visitors and on the verge of disappearing.

That being said I love their video reviews whether I agree with them or not and watch Invisible Walls every week. I never hated Shane Satterfield but do prefer the show as it is now.

GameTrailers actually didn't produce the PS4/Xbox One launch events or the VGAs (VGX this year); the site hosts those Spike-branded streams because Viacom is its powerful, loving mother. There are a few overlapping people who work on everything, but just to be clear, GameTrailers' editorial staff is completely separate from the pedestals of french fries.

Also The Final Bosman sucks.

bahahaha
EDIT: I am slightly disappointed your username isnt ChocolateRilk
That pedestal of french fries did have me curious

Gametrailers is the site I used to love back in 2007 when I got my 360 pretty much directly in response to high quality Assassin's Creed videos. Oh how the mighty have fallen.

Bosman and director of GT replies in thread immediately killing it.... there is some commentary there but I dont know what it is

GT is a place to watch game-related videos. And Brandon Jones.

I honestly can't watch any other sites video reviews, because of Brandon Jones' voice.

This. I'm always disappointed when I watch a review and someone else on the site did the voiceover (which doesn't happen often).

So are there certain gametrailer shows that are Spike affiliated and others that arent outside of GTTV?

They do a good job in getting the massive exclusives. Gotta give them credit for that, despite opinions towards Keighly being the one delivering all that in terms of videos.

In the past I went to G4/Xplay and Gametrailers for video reviews and Escapist for original show content. I eventually stopped going to Xplay because the website was becoming increasingly retarded in how it allowed me to view their content.

My time with Escapist has been in flux because I rarely take the time to check out their new shows after they discontinue their old ones I liked.

Gametrailers so far has gotten stronger over the years but I have been disappointed with how much Bonus Round has failed to grab my general interest in the last 2 years when I went to that website so much anticipating their talk show since 2006.

Also the community features have regressed considerably. I used to go to Gametrailers for community videos but that has been gutted out completely. At this point I wonder if this was a third of the reason Saterfield left.

I've experimented with other sites for video reviews but the only one to remotely standout is Giantbomb for their playthroughs who's claim to fame is to not have annoying commentators.

Our place? We're all over the place.

I mean really, we're a representation of our staff's passions. We have the big blowout event coverage. We have the popcorn entertainment. The deep dives. The reveling in small splinters of the industry. Discussions. Monologues. Unfunny comedy. Personalities you love, and personalites you hate. (I know you well enough GAF.)

As Bosman mentioned, there are overlapping circles of people that handle vastly different types of content. Some fingers that stretch into the wider Spike / Viacom waters and others of us that are just the closely knit home team, staying up late writing the best stuff we can, and hoping not too many people hate us in the morning.
