How does xbox one cross-game party chat work?

I don't understand what people are trying to say in here. I'm in a party now with 4 other people. We're all playing different games.

Thank you! This is what we needed to know.

Sounds like my buddies issue was having to turn on game chat. Different then last gen. I've been waiting for someone that knows what they are doing to chime in so thanks.

Sooo...

No one in this thread actually has an XB1 and is posting with 1st hand knowledge?

I would do more thorough testing on it but all my friends have gone to sleep now, nearing 2am in Aus

To clarify on my comment in OP it was more to do with how roundabout the method for creating a party and inviting friends is now when using a controller only.

We only partied up when we were all in BF4 so I wouldn't know how it functions cross-game

Thanks. So at least we know that this is not an issue for everyone. Maybe related to specific connection setups.

Which games are you all playing?

Thanks for clarifying. Now everyone, back to gaming!

Except me because I haven't gotten my Xbox yet :-(

Some people seemed to have issues, and we are too impatient to wait for people with the console to come post here, so the first page runs away with speculation.

Thanks for helping to clear it up.

Did you have to activate party chat first or did it work out of the box? As some people are having issues, it could be that it needs to be turned out as Colonel Nasty mentioned.

It looks like party chat is turned off by default. It's that way when I set up a party in the friends app. The reason? I have no clue. I just set up a party on the Xbox One (couldn't test chat though since no one on my friends list is online) and it gave me the option to turn on party chat. It seems like this option is only available for the host of the party. Therefore, the questioning of whether or not the Xbox One has party chat must have came from people who weren't the host(s).

You have to "Turn on party chat" when you join. It's a pain the ass. I hope they patch it. It's also annoying that you can't see what everyone else in your party is playing, like you could on the 360 view. I hope they add that back in also.

This is what needs to be tested to see how bad it may or may not be:

1. Can you be in a party without issues on the dashboard? Yes/No

2. Can you be in a party while one person is playing a game and the other person is watching Netflix, Amazon etc...? Yes/No

3. Can you be in a party while one person is playing different MP sessions, i.e. one person playing Ghosts MP while the other person playing BF4 MP etc...

4. Is Party chat different from Skype chat etc...?

Anyone think of anything else to test this out?

There we go.. so maybe the settings have to be right or its a bit picky right now or its a nat issue but the system should work.

Everything else with it has been fantastic in my experience.

I guess that explains why some people are having issues. Very strange that it now needs to be turned on though, what were MS thinking....

The issues will be on a game by game basis. Read post #6.... miles pulled the relevant quote from what I wrote about this a month ago. On the 360 it was a system wide feature, on the xbox one it's not. So it requires many different apps/games to talk to each other. For some games it's working fine, for some it's not.

Not coincidentally this is why party chat couldn't be shoehorned into the ps3.

It will be fine eventually, and depending on the game will be fine now... but the way they setup the system was not wise.

no way this is true.

kinect voice not working at all, I can believe
snap being leggy, I can believe

but no cross game party chat. no freaking way. I thought this was MS strength.

Neither of those are true either. At least I have been using both of them alot today.

Here we go, thanks Mort. It's like MS took 10 steps backward with some features this generation.

Except, for you know, the one post saying 5 different games, and basically the popular and most of the launch games are already confirmed to be working just fine between ALL of them. ;P

Seems like your sources were wrong. No missing invites, no missing notifications, no connectivity issues, no broken party chat that'll take months to fix, and Snap isn't broken. ;P

To be honest a lot of people have said snapped apps are running fairly slow. I'll check it out myself later today.

To be honest, is running slowly the same as Snap crashing and/or not working at all? I think that's a far cry from some of the rumors we've heard about it being a broken mess.

The party system works fine, I was playing ACIV, 2 buddies were on BF4, and another in Ryse. Worked like a charm and the voice quality is muchhhh better.

As software is a moving target it's not surprise that things are working better than stated in pre release rumors. As all the reviewers have said, they got multiple software updates in the last week.

That bodes well for the future of the system.

For some reason people couldn't grasp the concept of "moving target" when thread upon thread were made pre-release and those rumors were taken as gospel.

Glad people are finally getting it now.

Check your NAT settings people. My NAT is now strict and I am having party chat probs whilst my friends aren't!!!!!!!

And I can't access my router homepage at the moment either

It's really really weird. From what I gather, you have to get your friends into a party, and then you "opt-in" to chat. there's no longer an "Invite to party chat" type function. I've not tried cross-game yet. Seemed like a don't change what ain't broke kinda situation.
