Atlus's Persona event was the best hype-train I road from the start to the sweet end.

We've been waiting 5 years. They show some chibi EO spin off and a Miku dancing game. Get that shit outta here, they knew we were waiting for P5. They just wanted to see the reactions.

It's not a perfect comparison, but getting mad at Atlus for waiting until the end to show Persona 5 is like getting mad at Apple for doing their one more thing shit

You know it's freaking coming, just wait and be normal

Yeah, it's not like they're going to lead with it and show those two games afterwards.

It was a master stroke of trolling.

1) Hype the event up for a very long time, with a strong indication that this is Persona 5 along with two other announcements (the three boxes on the teaser page).

2) Block the people watching online from seeing the announcements as the people on the street were watching them.

3) Don't show Persona 5 to the people on the street; which then gives enough time for the news of the three non-P5 titles to filter out over Twitter and other social networks. Chaos ensues.

4) Fanbase melts down as those rumours of only three non-P5 games being announced are shown on the stream. Sense of dread washes over everyone.

6) And finally, to make everyone look like complete fucking idiots, P5 is announced.

10/10

But RPG fans have been burned sooooo many times lately, especially with S-E's countdown =/

2) Block the people watching online from seeing the announcements as the people on the street were watching them.

Is that actually what happenned? I thought people were seeing the same thing as the stream. And they didn't show the P5 teaser? O_o

I loved it as well. I was disappointed when I thought they weren't going to officially announce P5, but I figured everyone knows its in development and what system it was targeting initially, its just a matter of time.

It was a great payoff when they showed it finally though. Totally worth it, and they got a lot of publicity for the other games this way. Not all of it was good publicity haha, but people certainly know those spinoffs exist.

I don't think that's a valid comparison because of precedent. On one hand, we have a Japanese game company having a countdown for something they think is worth hyping via a live stream and on the other hand is a company that is supposedly known for their conferences and their method of delivery.

Not only has Atlus never done anything quite like this before, but when something comparable is done it usually ends up disappointing people. Combined with the fact that people hoped so strongly that this would be one specific game and they're shown something dramatically different, it's easy to understand where the emotional reactions came from.

We didn't know how many games they would show or how long this would last. Some initially thought that Persona Q was the only thing that was going to be shown.

When the people on the street were getting the teasers, an old lady was on the online stream telling everyone how the people on the street were watching the announcement. As the camera tried to look around her to see what was on the big screen in the street, she kept blocking it and jabbering on, while a bunch of men behind the camera started pissing themselves laughing.

It bought time for news of only three games to filter onto the web, i.e. no Persona 5 announcement, and as the online stream caught up to what was rumoured from the public event the fanbase began to meltdown until P5 was actually announced.

All the rumour mongering actually made us scared that Atlus was not going to announce P5 and it was just going to be those three titles. Remember we always expected 3 so after all three where announced we thought that was it.

Truly masterful trolling by Atlus.

Not even close, for me. Sony's February conference was easily the most hype inducing for me.

That was on another level. The kaz gif hype thread will forever been known as one of the greatest threads ever.

We didn't know how many games they would show or how long this would last. Some initially thought that Persona Q was the only thing that was going to be shown.

I don't feel like going over everything point by point, but the people that thought that are very silly.

And we knew multiple announcements were coming.

Honestly? That shit all came from here. All self contained. Logic and reason would dictate we'd get at least Ultimax release date and knowing P5 exists.

Instead we got a full platform and release date for both. And two other games that are side things and don't affect either at all.

And they were not going to do all this shit for P4U.

That explains the old lady thing haha. Wow, they really went all in with the trolls.

We knew 3 were coming. Argue all you like but any panic mode that happened after we saw three things (Q, A2, Dance) was perfectly legitimate.

That's true, we did know multiple announcements were coming and all three of them were leaked while the old lady was talking. But, for the reasons Omikaru stated, that didn't really help any when it came to the issue of "where's Persona 5?"

I will probably remember this roller coaster ride of pure emotions for the rest of my life. It's been so long since Persona 4 that I'd forgotten how much I love Atlus.

I couldn't help but laugh with how confused I felt when an old lady started to talking to me about Persona. I felt my heart sink as PQ was revealed(now I'm interested in it though). Hope was regained as I realised how much time had gone by, and that surely they had one last thing to reveal. I never hated Teddie as much as I did during these 45ish minutes.

Then 55:555 was on my screen. I never fist pumped so hard at the announcement of something in my whole life. It was unbelievable how joyous I felt!

Also GAF going down the moment 55:555 happened was just hilarious. :P

Sure. But considering that shit started fucking immediately with nearly everyone, I don't care.

OGOD ITS PERSONA CHIBI 3DS, WE ARE ALL IN HELL

This and the SEGA WILL KILL ATLUS shit just makes me want to ignore these threads forever and just play the games when they come out.

Chill the hell out. If the stream had fucking ended without it, that's when you freaking panic.

They're not going to fucking lead with P5 then go HEY GUYS CHECK OUT THIS SWAG YU HAS

Imo it was bad, after weeks of hype persona 5 was not shown and we got 2 persona spinoffs i'm not interested in, persona q was the more interesting game, for a console i don't own.
I understand that some people are happy, but i don't think to be the only one heavily disappointed by this

Atlus trolling: 10/10 would not participate again for fear of heart attack.

Exactly this.

New animated cinematics omg new persona ! ...ugly Chibli on 3DS... sort of want but don't have 3DS... conflicted...

To be fair, the art style is still shit and I don't think people realized right away that it was EO? (I wasn't awake so I have no clue) So there was really no knowing whether this......thing would be good.

They're not going to fucking lead with P5 then go HEY GUYS CHECK OUT THIS SWAG YU HAS

hahahaha but it would have been glorious if they did.

I explained why people were melting down in these two posts. Context is important.

Atlus planned the whole thing so news of only three games -- i.e. not Persona 5 -- would filter onto the web as rumorus or whatever, and then as each game was confirmed 10-15 minutes later on the stream the fanbase would start reacting.

It all comes down to how things were timed; they fully intended to trick people into thinking P5 was not going to be on the stream by allowing "all the announcements" to get onto the web early, by letting the public event "finish" before the online stream had even shown the first trailer.

Persona 5 for the PS3 was the main event.

Eh, I'm not a big EO guy but I can see the appeal.

And yes yes it would've.

I have a shocking idea.

They also did that first because you don't lead with P5, lest those games get overshadowed by the big red monster in the room.

That's why they did it, to give each game time. Not to fucking troll America. P5 was the main event, and it was built to. It's lesson freaking one. And we knew it was coming, that much was obvious.

It's like you have all the evidence, but you picked the wrong murderer at the end of an adventure game.

And people melting down waaaay before that shit.

That stream was amazing. Masterful trolling from Atlus with Persona 5 to end it all. My emotions bounced all over the place during the event, and seeing others react in a similar way was enjoyable. I laughed, cried, screamed, and nearly collapsed due to excitement/fatigue [okay, that last one might be an over-statement...].

It was incredible.

They didn't troll america, they trolled every single person watching that stream and you're crazy if you think otherwise. I just watched bits and pieces of a capture of that stream, the entire thing was set up to be a troll. Hell they had Teddie announcing the end of with no P5 in sight and then stopped him with another big ass countdown.

Look man they obviously trolled. The cutting to the women when they where showing off a game and her deliberately blocking the view.

Announcing three games and saying the event is over before they announced P5

I'm sorry but its clear as day.

I don't consider some chairs and the game title worth of a main event hyped for weeks

Oh believe, 5 years waiting, persona fans are happy that P5 has finally been announced for PS3.

1) I'm not disagreeing about showing P5 first, of course. It's common sense to keep your biggest or best until last. I do it with everything; from the food on my plate to the games on my backlog. I get that, and I'm not disagreeing with you on that front.

2) What I said in 1) does not preclude them having fun with the fanbase in Japan or America, however. The fact that they got some old woman to gloat at the fanbase watching online, telling them that all those people on the street were watching the announcements, is pretty much proof that they were trying to wind people up. They didn't even show P5 on the street show because they wanted people watching online to think only three games were announced before they showed P5 at the end of the stream.

Disagree if you want, but I think you're wrong.

Yeah it was a fun ride, you hsould have seen the #personaGAF chat

Also slightly off topic OP but is your avatar... intentional?

Haha yes, he was making fun of everyone who had put luigi hat's on their avatars around the time dark moon was coming out.

I don't know about the rest of what you said but this is the major point that needs to be taken in. If P5 was shown first no one would've given the other games a second glance. :lol

star of the show

When they showed off about three seconds of footage for the first trailer and then immediately switched to this old hag I was dying. Then Teddy appeared and started making bad bear puns in Japanese and tripping over for a good 30 minutes.

Kojima and Sakurai would be jealous. This was the work of a true master.

What sweet end? They announced a game that everyone pretty much knew existed, without any footage or screenshots released to see it in action with a release date of a year from now. That's a fairly awful reveal to a completely overbuilt marketing campaign.

In retrospect that was an amazing roller coaster and the announcements delivered.

But, I'd have been (and was) pretty pissed off if a 2 month countdown had only led to 3 spinoffs being announced. As it is, it's perfect, we've got names, dates and platforms.

PQ and P5 are the 2 games I'm interested in. No interest in the fighting game as I skipped the first one on principle and I don't get rythm games.

Great show.

Edit: when that 55:555 counter showed up, going from despair to hope in one second lol.

Not like they even needed to. Just a simple release date made people lose their shit.

I disagree. We've known that Persona 5 has been in development for ages. Simply saying "Hey we are making Persona 5" isn't enough for me. I already fucking knew that, tell me something about it. The extremely distant release date doesn't get me hyped either. It just makes me depressed.

Really the only thing that got me excited was the Adachi tease for P4U2.

And you know what, a year from now when people are playing the game, they will look back at this reveal trailer and think "damn, they told us so much in so little time"

You know what system it was coming for, you know what time frame it will be coming out in, and you know that information will start trickling out now. Is this info you had yesterday? No. Now stop that complaining.

You know, if tomorrow Valve made a teaser with a simple Lambda and 3 logo that said "Winter 2014", everyone would lose their shit and rightly so.

Yeah, we knew they were working on their new game, we had reason to believe on PS3 but an official announcement is something else entirely.

This whole reveal was amazing. From the woman in the beginning blocking off the trailer of Persona Q, Teddy ranting on for 30+ minutes, and that entire P4D trailer, which had me in tears of laughter and bewilderment. I had just about given up hope until 55:555 flashed on screen. All dat hype.

Nicely done, Atlus.

Sorry, but I just can't buy into to these super early and vague teasers anymore. I've always found Atlus's past reveals to be refreshing because they shared so much information and the games came out so soon afterwards. This reveal was even worse than those bullshit CG only trailers that most publishers do. I would have been much happier if this event hadn't happened and instead we got a huge reveal 6 months before release.

They couldn't do that though. They have a game ready to go from the EO team that is releasing about 6 months from now and they couldn't just announce that with no P5, the fan base would have gone berserk.
