Anthropomorphic animals in games | Does it influence your buying decision?

Eh, no more stupid than seeing humans in a setting of fantasy.

To you, maybe.

It really just comes down to personal preference. Disliking something doesn't mean it can't exist for someone else, I see no reason to hate on people who are into that stuff, but I see nothing wrong with people openly not wanting to associate with it either.

Who the hell is Rogue?

Probably means Rouge

Solatorobo (spiritual sequel to Tail Concerto and the third of the Little Tail Bronx series) ended up much better. Great art, great universe. Gameplay wasn't bad. Lovely music.

I still wish it gets SRW repped.

Also who ever did that image macro of comparing it to Sonic should be pushed to a cliff.

It doesn't even have to be furries anyway. It just bothers me that you have this world of fictional make-believe and you still plomp in boring-ass humans.

Frog is a perfect example. Great character, good design, anthropomorphic nature is relevant to the story, and he doesn't have big distracting genitalia (as far as I can tell).

When talking about anthropomorphism, complaining that the women ladies have boobies, seems like pissing in the wind. And in tend to not find that stuff distracting, so it distracting you might... be indicative of something else.

Who the hell is Rogue?

A class I believe.
Also rouge is 1 out of how many characters, just seems like variety to me. Eh, to bad her character is 1 note, but that is a completely other problem with another solution.

You know, I think it's unjustified the amount of shit Rouge gets for being a "sexy" character.
Am I the only person who likes her?

Eh, to bad her character is 1 note, but that is a completely other problem with another solution.

I don't even think that she's one note, she's been known to have various character traits both positive (concerned, caring, dutybound, flirty (in the case of Knuckles) ) and negative (selfish, manipulative, conniving) but that's what makes her awesome. It's like hating on Android 18.

She actually does a lot but doesn't get recognized because of "lol bat girl with tits."

She needs a cooler outfit.
( litterally jack and edit C.Vipers outfit)

Personally, I really like the type of imagery anthro characters can create. Seeing a small lithe rabbit square off against a bigger brawnier creature like a dog or wolf in overgrowth has a very david vs goliath feel. It gives you the sense that either this is going to be a very one sided fight or this is one badass rabbit. Sure you could get that same big dude vs little dude setup with human characters but it loses something.

The problem with this stuff on the internet is that too many people cannot express "This is not my thing" without going overboard to justify their dislike. And often it comes out as "I hate this shit because I'm better than you horrible people who like it, why do you have to exist."

It could be animal people, it could be Call of Duty, fedoras, or whatever.

Doesn't bother me unless it drifts into the creepy, fan service-y zone. And honestly, that'd kind of rub me the wrong way whether it was 'furry' or not. I grew up in the 80s so we had all sorts of different shades of anthropomorphic characters, from human-with-animal-features like Thundercats to the human-sized animals of Disney (Duck Tales / Rescue Rangers / Tailspin / Darkwing Duck) to animals-with-human-features at Bluth (American Tail / Secret of NIMH). It doesn't even move the needle on my Freaky Meter, and I say this as someone who regularly reads and posts in the "Awesome" Fan art thread where all sorts of twisted fan art based on beloved childhood characters crops up. I guess the only series that I have a reflexive aversion to at this point is Sonic, just because there's so. much. of it.

Ah, I came in here to mention the Charr but I see it's already being handled. The females tend to be shorter, have more fur on their tails, and have narrower faces. Their muscle customization can get them pretty close to the males, but overall their options tend to be more on the sleek side. That's really the only difference, and it's actually based heavily on the sexual dimorphism of big cats.

It's funny when you hold it up next to garbage like the Worgen or Pandaran females, who are essentially "bipedal wolves with boobs!" and "bipedal red pandas with boobs!". The developers mentioned that they spent a lot of time trying to get them looking just right because they flat out refused to take the easy "female = boobs" route. It really shows when you can recognize the genders without human-based physical elements making it obvious. The difference between male and female Charr is almost indistinguishable at a distance, especially in armor. Get up close though and you can tell from the way they carry themselves and move about.

The problem with this stuff on the internet is that too many people cannot express "This is not my thing" without going overboard to justify their dislike. And often it comes out as "I hate this shit because I'm better than you horrible people who like it, why do you have to exist."

Can we agree that everyone universally dislikes Furries who wear Fedoras while playing Call of Duty?

lol c'mon she got more going on than Viper. Viper's interesting, but mostly because she seems mysterious, so they make up for her character by revealing little things about her life.

I disagree, she has no development really, mystery only goes so far. C.Viper has a dynamic She is well.....Mom. And not just in the literally way if you hear C.Viper talk to everyone she beats in SF4 she lectures them, and not the usual philosophical fighter mess. She is actually wondering what the people are doing with their lives, the younger fighters in particular. She sees fighting as a job and she is questioning of their life choices. Not out of cruelty, she just wants them to do better. Sure she can taunt people at the end of the she sees most conflict as a hassle and seems upset she has to do this for a living. But for reasons mostly left unexplained, she gotta do what she gotta do to make that paper, help the world, and provide for her daughter.

Rouge is just some mystery lady who likes jewels and is sometimes nice to the red one, and is really nice to the black one, and is friends with the pink and purple one. I dunno she has nothing going on, hell a lot of her motivation is shadow or something in the moment. What I mean by c.viper is not literally becoming c.viper, it is becoming is not relying on a pseudo boyfriend to create her story. More solo adventures, maybe more delving into gun. Would be an interesting series of comic books.

C.Viper has a dynamic, she is the Street fighter Mama. Rouge kinda has traits, sometimes.

If the design is good (Klonoa, Sonic, Blinx, Rachet) It guarantees a look from me either by box art or gameplay videos.

If the design is bad (Crash, Jack, Sly cooper, Donkey Kong, star fox, Rayman) then I'll dismiss it unless the game is amazing (new Spyro games)

ibsPgOcOKhwDfK.gif

I'm not sure why Rayman was even brought up, there are no mammals or furry creatures in the game.

Sonic, Starfox, Crash Bandicoot, Donkey Kong, Sly Cooper, Ratchet and Clank, the entire cast of Skylanders, Klonoa. If anything, cartoon anthro characters are usually a sign of a good game.
Waits for someone to post Bubsy.

Hmm. It depends.

Are are furries wearing horn-rimmed glasses?

And do the astronauts have guns?

Nah, the horn-rimmed glasses is kind of dragging hipsters into it and since public opinion seems to rank them somewhere between paper cuts and dryer lint, it just pushes it too hard and too fast into the hate zone.

No comment on astronauts with guns, Moonraker set the bar pretty low for me as a kid.

I am indifferent towards the furry artstyle. If done right, it could produce some beautiful imagery like any other artstyle. I just think the internet overly hates this artstyle because it's unfairly associated with fetish stuff even though it's not exclusive to it. I've seems bad and good art in almost every style. Hell, half of my childhood cartoons are made up of furry characters.

i could never get into naughty dog's Jack & Daxter, i hate the post genesis sonic and i never liked zidan in ff ix

old sonic, crash, donkey kong etc are fine. the disliking starts when they get too anhropomorphized

There's nothing wrong with anthropomorphic animals.

There's something a little wrong with fetishising and over-sexualizing them.

The current trend is "realistic" or "hip"!

Nothing wrong with realistic if it's more of a style choice for the benefit of what world and story you want to get across rather than, "Because it's popular and gamers won't have it any other way, because majority of people only live trend to trend and believe there is NOTHING else out there that matters besides that!". "Hip" is according to the flavor of the week(or what I like to call, "Flavor of the Weak").

On levels of character depth, the same could be argued for all Sonic characters, but honestly I would never want them to have a heavy ass background or origin story. They are a perfect mix of colorful and edgy (imo). As for the extra shit like comics or spin-offs or something, maybe spin-offs but I'll pass on comics. Just give her some more screentime or something.

Street Fighter is more centered on Fighting, with goals and ambition. Sonic is just a new day a new adventure, therefore you would never get that kind of material from Rouge. C.Viper is damn near in the same boat as Remy.

I have just realized that I have no idea what the hell rayman is supposed to be. Human? alien? animal?

He's a Rayman.

The only time it bothered me was in Dust. Everything else is fine.

Though I will say, I didn't particularly like Sine Mora's style. It wasn't bad or anything, but I felt like the designs looked so humanlike anyway that the animal heads just looked odd. I prefer more stylized stuff like Sonic, myself.

It in no way effects my purchasing decision. Often times I will be more interested in a game that has a cartoony style like Ratchet & Clank, and those tend to have the most anthropomorphic animal characters.. but it's not the aforementioned animals that appeal to me.

It does.

If a game focuses on a animal that, walks, talks, and has breast like a human woman I'm not buying it. Sorry don't want or need that in my life.

Don't think I hate animals only. If a game stars a kid 16 or under I'm not buying you either. Hell I can handle side characters that are animals, but FF IV's or Lost Odysse's brats? Fuck that shit.

I don't mind it.
I'd take a dozen Foxes on two legs with crazy eyes over every standard Marine soldier with short hair/muscles, design-wise.

more appreciation for Klonoa is always welcome, I sure hope you're not saying the new Spyro design is any good.
.

I'm talking about purely about character design, not game quality. New Spyro is a bad design but the game did so well that it guarantee a second look for me. The above ones where games I check out, specially because I loved the character design.

Unless it's some blatant fetish pandering, I don't care. A lot of people are saying they stayed away from dust because of it's furry art style but I think the real problem those people had isn't that dust was furry but that the style felt very amateurish in how it came across in the game. Dust and overgrowth have been brought up a few times so I'll use those as examples. On the left is a rabbit character from dust and on the right is rabbit character art from overgrowth. Neither is necessarily more "furry" than the other but one is more realistically represented and better drawn. It's not furry art that's making you avoid a game, it's just what you perceive as poor art.
j7Xue9S.jpg

I think this is partially it, but it's also that the particular style of poor art seen here is easily associated with the my-first-anime-drawing-guide type of stuff common in the seedy depths of deviantart.

Pffffaahahahahaha, this is hilarious. You make it sound like buying a game with an anthropomorphic character is like you're letting a drug addicted stranger stay in your house or something.

No. Nothing of the sort. Just like I don't hate children.

However if you're going to stick DD's on some animal and have her hip cocked then to me its not appealing. If they are going to be human in everway but skin texture and having a tale, then I just want a woman and not domething pretending to be an animal.

I'm glad I grew up on Bugs Bunny cartoons and not deviantart. I thought Dust was awesome and never thought anything about the art style other than how great the animation was.
