Just bought a Wii U. Surprisingly, there were no shortages.

So I see that the Wi Ui Virtual Console game selection pretty much sucks. If I also have a wii, I can buy games from the wii virtual console and transfer them over to the wii u, right? For example A Link to the Past isn't available in the wii u shop, but I can just buy it with my wii and transfer it over to the wii u with an sd card, yeah?
You're overcomplicating things. You can access the original Wii Shop from the Wii U. Just do that.

I think the one and only feature you lose by doing this is true 240p output (well, that and Gamecube controller support). The Wii U always upscales the video to whatever resolution you have it set to in system settings (480p, 720p, or 1080p).

While I think you can only do the Wii transfer once
No.

Still relatively new to the wii u so I have a couple of questions that I'm not completely positive about

No. You can only play VC games that are in the WiiU eShop on the WiiU.
For the rest of the VC games, you'll have to boot into Wii mode and play them exactly the same way you would on the Wii. (except now you can output the video to the pad rather than the tv)

You can buy Wii VC games from the Wii mode on Wii U directly. And you can play them in the Wii mode on Wii U. The Wii mode works exactly like a real Wii, so it boots up in the Wii "OS" and you can use just the controllers you can use on the actual Wii (so no Wii u pro controller or gamepad). The only difference is that it upscales better to the screen (but that doesn't matter for the VC) and you can stream your games also to the
gamepad as a screen, but you still need to use a wii remote or a wii controller.

And the games that are not available on Wii U VC can't be upgraded from Wii to Wii U version (Miiverse, save states, control and play on Gamepad etc.).

So, to sum up, you can boot Wii mode on Wii U (the icon is on gamepad screen or you can keep B pressed on the Gamepad when you start up the console) go to Wii shop channel and buy A Link to the Past and play it in Wii mode.

So after a few weeks with my new wii U and this list of games I have some comments.

Pikmin 3 - looks amazing

Nintendoland - that rum and 5 player mario chase/ luigi mansion party was awesome!

Wii party U - fun but wouldn't buy without free wiimote

Mario 3D world - great but...

Wonderful 101 - this game man...this game! Has completely made me forget about any of the games above. Top 10 GOAT for me as of last week. Everyone who is reading this thread needs to buy this game now! Whatever happens to wii-U sales wise or as far as history of consoles goes this game will make this nintendo generation forever dear to my heart.

Also to anyone interested in the battery upgrade for the pad I say go for it. Never have to worry about charging again, and I have been playing at least 5/6 hours a day Wonderful sessions. It does feel a bit heavier for when I browse the net in bed with it though...

Can't bring myself to buy one. I have a relatively high bullshit tolerance when it comes to Nintendo, but giving them more money to solve a problem of their own making is my limit. I'd rather sit there, arms crossed and chuntering to myself, as the 'battery low' light blinks forlornly at me than reward them for that decision.

Also, I have the charging stand right next to the sofa :)

Forgot to mention it in the first post, but I have it enabled in there. It was on by default I think and I've never changed it since. Just checked it again and it's still set to "on." I also noticed it specifically says it'll use the light for notifications, which I'm assuming means the little ads or notices that occasionally pop up in the home menu's notification screen, which I've gotten several of and have never had the LED turn on for. Weird.
It's blinking twice when a friend comes online. Or it should be at least. I don't think it does anything when you get a SpotPass notification.

I've had zero interest in W101 up until this point.

If I get the demo, is it representative of the game?

It is representative of the core gameplay but not the whole game. Game is epic so buy it.

Basically, it is just a practice mode if you want to be good at (basic) combos before playing the main game.

alright thanks everybody.
Not exactly sure where I got the idea that you had to use the wii console itself to access the wii vc. I thought I read that somewhere and with so many people complaining about the lack of games available on the wii u eshop, it seemed like a possibility. The actual way is definitely a lot easier, though it sucks that I can't use the wii u pro controller

I don't know how else to put this but... The demo is complete garbage. I hated it and liked the full game. I have no idea why they thought it was a good idea to put up a demo like that (or demo at all for that to matter).

I am still so undecided about W101...
Everybody and his Mom is raving about it, yet playing the demo leaves me scratching my head in confusion everytime...

Buy it. At worst it's a cult classic collector's item in two years time and you can sell it for profit. You'll probably end up liking it anyway.

You have to play it enough before it "slows" down in your brain.

It's overwhelming at first but it isn't always if you spend time with it.

If it's considered a "beat 'em up", it will go down as one of the best of that kind in the history of videogames.

I tried it way before the release, and liked it.
Then, I downloaded the demo, and was somehow confused by it.
Then, I bought it, and I loved it. GOTY for me up to now

The demo is quite confusing. It just throws you right into a level without telling you anything. The full game has a short tutorial and eases you in slowly.

As it seems like this is the place where new Wii U owners have gathered, perhaps I can ask my own question here.

I'm planning on purchasing the Wii U Premium Pack that comes with New Super Mario Bros. U + Super Luigi U, but I have one concern: are the Remote and the Nunchuk required for any Wii U games at all? I don't care about Wii backwards compatibility, and so I was hoping to avoid having to deal with motion controls and simply get a couple of Wii U Pro Controllers for local multiplayer instead.

Only for multiplayer.
Some games like NintendoLand need WiiRemotes for multiple people.

Is there/will there be any Wii U games that uses the gamepad + 4 Wiimotes? Or is GP + 3 Wiimotes as many as it can handle? Just wondering if I should order an extra Wiimote (although I might still get one in case I want to start building a Wii backlog).

Some Wii U games needs Remote plus or Remote plus + Nunchak to be played in local mulitplayer.
i.e. Nintendo Land

Some Wii U games supports up to five players. i.e. Sonic All Star Racing transformed
Not all, and the vast majority of games support the Wii U Pro controller for local multiplayer.

Mario and Luigi U support (after the firmware update you'll have to download) too (initially supported only Remotes)

the pro controller is glorious. probably my favorite traditional controller out there. I'd recommend getting a couple of wiimote+ and nunchucks though. it seems Nintendo is still utilizing motion controls where it works and for games like Pikmin it's the best way to play, imo.

if they really grind your gears you can probably do without them though

I can confirm these games I have offer a 5 player mode:

Rayman Legends
Nintendo Land
Wii Party U
NSMBU
Just Dance 4
Chasing Aurora
The Wonderful 101

I'd say if you are into local multiplayer, you may find it useful to have 4 wiimotes.

GAF, I have that Nintendo itch again. I want to know more about the Wii U before I buy it.
My last Nintendo console was the N64.
I have a few questions.

Can you play all games with the pro controller?
Also, what console edition is the best to get?
What are some must have games, I would only like to play exclusive games, I can play multiplats games on my PC or PS4.
Can you download Wii games on the Wii U or does it only supports physical games?

That's all for now haha.

Thanks! Yeah, seems like another Wiimote will be needed after all. Might get the Nintendo Land + Wiimote bundle when it comes out.

The Wii U Pro controller doesn't work with all the games, but it works with most of them. What games to you want to get first?

Console edition also depends on what games do you like. The best value now is the Mario bundle (premium console + NSMBU+NSLU). Second is Zelda WW HD bundle.

My personal must have games: Mario 3d World, Wonderful 101, Pikmin 3, Lego City Undercover, ZombiU, Nintendo Land, Zelda WW HD and MH3U. I ordered them by preference, but first 3 are really very close in quality from my point of view.

Edited:
You can not download Wii Games on the WiiU. Only WiiWare.

You can download Wii games on Wii U. Practically when it boots in Wii mode it is acting like a Wii. But the digital offer on Wii is not extraordinary.

I want to play Zelda and Mario, those are going to be my first games. Where can I see the list of games that supports the pro controller?

That Mario bundle looks sweet. Another question, does the Wii U requires a subscription like PS+ or Live to play online?

Both games have support for the Wii U pro controller. You can see what controllers each game support on nintendo site on the game page. Also here:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Wii_U_games_that_use_the_Wii_U_Pro_Controller ( but I don't know if it is 100% accurate)

No, there is no subscription for online.

Ever use one? Ever hold a pair of boobs? Pretty much the same thing.

This is true. The Wii U Pro Controller is the boobs to the big (but great) ass Gamepad. Both handling godly.

I hate motion controllers. I'm planning to also play Wii games on it but only if it doesn't force me to play with the Wii mote T_T I hate it

The Gamepad is practically a controller with a screen in it. It has also motion integrated, but it is not mandatory to use. Most people find Gamepad to be actually very nice and comfortable to use, but some don't. You should try it on your own.

Mom bought me a Wii U for Christmas. I only know because she bought it in front of me and is holding it hostage.

A couple questions:

1. what is the difference between Wii U Virtual Console and Wii Virtual Console?

2. Can I play Virtual Console on the game pad / tablet controller?

3. Is there a Wiibrew? Or is that a bad question to ask here?

4. Any advantage to keep my Wii around? (Gamecube support? Wiibrew? Imports?)

She got the Wind Waker bundle. I already have Zelda though. Been stock piling Wii U games because I knew some day I would get a Wii U. Have to have my Mario, Zelda, etc fix.

I figure I'll ask this here since I guess it's basically the general Wii U thread:

oOGvbmG.png

I realized the other day that the little blue light around may gamepad's home button has never once lit up for any reason. Is this normal? Not during bootup, not when an update is available, not when the Wii Fit Info thing automatically downloaded, never. Does Nintendo just not use that light for anything or is something wrong with my controller?

It doesn't flash constantly. It flashes briefly when you get a Miiverse notification, a friend request, your follower feed updates or anything else happens on your system. But, as I said, only briefly. Not like the constant fade in fade out of the Wii's blue light.

Wii U VC means you can play the game using the pad.
Wii VC means you have to use the same controllers you did on the Wii.

1) Wii Virtual Console exists only in Wii Mode which is basically a completely isolated Wii inside your Wii U. It supports none of the Wii U features or controllers. A recent firmware update enabled you to mirror the screen to the GamePad's touch screen in Wii Mode so you can play all Wii (and Wii VC, WiiWare) games on the GamePad screen but you cannot use the GamePad buttons so you still need to use Wii-compatible controllers (Wiimotes, Classic Controller). Continued in 2)

2) See above for original Wii VC. Wii U VC lets you play ALL VC games on the GamePad and WITH the GamePad obviously. It also adds new emulation features like restore points, mappable buttons and lets you post screenshots to Miiverse (480p max res) and/or any web hoster you want via the Wii U browser (720p max res) so you can flood GAF with your Wrecking Crew high scores.

3) There is a way to get the old homebrew stuff to work in Wii Mode but I'm not familiar with the details.

4) Yes, the things you listed. I use my old Wii for the import titles I own (and GCN controller support for supported games), for example since I don't wanna mess with Wii Mode on Wii U.

1. They are completely separate. You need to enter "Wii Mode" to play Wii VC games. Wii Mode restarts your Wii U as a Wii, complete with Wii menus etc. If you own games on Wii VC you get a discount to buy them on Wii U VC.

2. Wii U VC games, yes.

3. You can still softmod the Wii Mode since it is basically just a normal Wii, but there are no hacks for the Wii U.

4. Not really. edit: Well GC support I guess.

How big is the update? I bought Wind Waker HD Wii U bundle last week, but have yet to turned it. I need to prepare my internet for the update.

Good luck with that.
Most of the finest Wii games only work with wiimotes, and rightfully so, ie Super Mario Galaxy 1-2 would be basically impossible to play with a standard dual analog setup.
