Destiny: Traditional "very directed" campaign story; entire solar system explorable

So it's like Borderlands? Hmm...I may be burned out of this loot style fps by the time this comes out. Playing through BL2 now and then I'll probably buy a few of the dlc. That's a lot of lootin!

I have no idea why titanfall gets more attention than Destiny. This game is much more ambitious.

Because this is a Borderlands 2 clone whereas Titanfall is a fps with robots. New gameplay mechanics! Looks awesome. Destiny sounds like Borderlands, but without the humor (a bad thing imo)

If there's a significant amount of PvP info revealed, can someone make a new thread? I want to avoid info on the rest of the game.

It probably has a lot to do with Titanfall being readily playable to the press while Destiny has been restricted to dev demos. I also think that Titanfall is something that you can probably play for a round and instantly understand what you're getting yourself into. Destiny is much bigger and will likely require more play time to really understand what Bungie is trying to sell you.

It's also because it's an "exclusive." So it gets bandied about as 'the reason' to own an Xbox and championed by the system's owners.

Plus, to be fair, it's made by the guys behind probably the biggest gaming franchise in the world right now. So that matters.

Time for a new reaction gif.

Can't wait for this.

So as I understand it, Destiny is campaign/online coop experience the weaves in competitive multiplayer at regular intervals. Is that accurate?

considering how busted halos servers are during launch with playlist errors

glad to know I will be sitting on the error can't connect to server screens instead of playing single player during launch week

Yep. You can also access the map and go directly to multiplayer events if you choose.

From reading the article it sounds a little bit like Burnout Paradise to me. Seamlessly welded campaign, co-op, competitive. Very ambitious.

Sort of a bummer that we can't fly our own spaceships around but the article talks about how you see them a lot/are displayed at the Tower so that's cool I suppose.

It would be awesome to fly your space ship to a competitive match lobby, but I guess a button press and a fancy cutscene will have to suffice.

Oh man, it would be so amazing if something like Star Citizen was teamed up with a game like this for full space mode and full ground mode...

Of course the lore is completely different, but you get my meaning. To have a truly open world...hell open UNIVERSE space exploration/shooter.

It could be used as an inventory/house though. So you can do stuff like pick out an outfit/loadout or chat while traveling/loading the new location.

When they say free-roaming, I would like to know just how "free" we are talking here. I would have to imagine it being a daunting task to put content on such a big planet. I wonder how they plan to use all of that space.

Could I just get lost traveling down one direction for minutes on end? And will it have stuff to interact with or would it be all randomly generated?

Everything they've said about the competitive multiplayer indicates that it will be entirely elective. "[Story missions and competitive multiplayer] will be very separate activities."

And this image shows that there are hoppers (Halo-style playlists) for both competitive and cooperative multiplayer, so the idea is that you do what you want to do, when you want to do it. I'd be sort of surprised if any of the story required you to do competitive multiplayer outside of a single initial "here's what's in the game" questline.

Curious to see how they are going to be able to blend "solo" with multilayer experience.
How often will they update content.
I'm wondering if they could have procedurally generated dungeons (why not?)?
Can't wait to explore and discover things, hidden places, that really gives you that "adventure" feeling.
I think I also read somewhere, that the spaceship you'll use won't be just a visual gadget and space exploration will be interesting too (who said the solar system isn't exciting ;)).

Anyway can't wait for the release! Can't wait to get my hands on this game!

Sounds pretty great. 2014 is going to be a fantastic year for gaming.

As much as I am not at all a fan of this online-only movement, Bungie has the right idea it seems on how to keep us solo players happy. The fact that I can play through the whole thing solo is awesome and being able to explore the whole solar system is amazing as well. I just wish Titanfall would have done something similar.

I'm still hopeful - can't believe they built all the mechanics just for a third of a level in Halo Reach. There were some more glimpses of the ships in the Out Of Darkness video (or whatever it was called - I'm on my phone hence no link) - hopefully we'll hear more through this GI press.

This game is looking more and more promising. I don't really mind the always online aspect as long as I don't have to always interact. Would suck if my connection was shitty for any reason but a persistent world is awesome.

This jumped up on my radar for sure with this info.

Come one splitscreen announcement.

This game will get played SO much more by me if it allows splitscreen. It'd be awesome when a friend comes over, for him to log into his profile and for us to couch co-op through the game.

That will probably be the only way they get me to actually explore/take my time with it. Otherwise, I will probably just plow through the story myself, and just sell it as fast as I can.

Any info about how servers will work? Seperate by console brands? Cross gen online multiplayer possible?

I dont know about Sony because they seem open to allowing PS/PC players to play together, Microsoft on the other hand have been the ones that seem to take issue with that. Its one of the reasons that Dust 514, and now FFXIV are not coming to Xbox consoles.

Sonys stance seems to be "do what you want to" when it comes to it, atleast thats the way it appears.

Why does it have to be online? I play games to get away from people!! Also, Diablo 3 Redux situation

Wait, really? Then I guess I'm ruining games for you, because I'm always pushing for more online interaction in otherwise single player games. I'm totally fine with playing games on my own, but weaving online cooperative content into a single player experience always makes me happy.

"There is a very defined storyline, with a beginning, middle and end," says head of community Eric Osborne. "For those who want to binge and concentrate on story, you can have what feels like a very directed, cinematic experience."

Free-roaming the worlds:

A tour through Old Russia offers a clear representation of free-roaming flow. Some may remember the E3 demo of Destiny. A scripted mission played out underneath a massive wall, ending in a larger public battle against a Fallen tank mech. However, turn a few different corners, and you emerge beyond the wall into a free-roaming countryside.

With a button press, you can hop on your personal vehicle and skim across the grasslands at high speed. Off to the side, a small sea gleams in the sunlight, with ancient rusted ship hulks jutting up from the shoals.
Ok this sounds good. About time it did.

So is it just the Earth, old Russia, the tower, Mars, the moon, and Venus that are locations in Destiny 1?
Or we're those just the destinations that GI was shown?

I doubt they can deliver the experience they promise, even if its Bungie.

I hope I am wrong but it just seems like this game is too good to be true.

Borderlands did not have ANYWHERE near the depth of character customization via items, that Destiny has. Armor slots. Lots of them. This makes Destiny literally a billion times the better game, to me.

Reading through this thread makes me realize that Bungie has done a piss poor job of describing what their game is. I'm a huge Bungie fan and I've had a pretty good idea of what to expect since early this year but its obvious the message isn't getting out.

As features and details get locked Bungie has an uphill battle to clear the air and expectations. Can't wait though Day 1 PS4 for me.

I am completely the opposite on co-op, I pretty much only want co-op games. I absolutely love playing alongside my friends. On 360 I loved: Borderlands 1 & 2, Halo's, Minecraft, Left4Dead's, Diablo 3 and now Warframe on PS4.

Which is what Destiny reminds me of the most. It seems like a more polished version of Warframe, switch out space ninja's for space knights, from the creator's of Halo.

Can Not Wait! May splitscreen and co-op gaming never die!

You are my new best friend :)

I just can't wait for the outrage when the information comes out about how much of this is pay walled. Why else would it need to be online only? Because online only is a "great" form of DRM.

It's nice to have the option to go completely offline. Not just because your own internet may go down but because the game servers will not last forever. Always-online games have a shelf life. It makes sense for MMOs but keep that crap away from my single player games.

in my head i picture mass effect 1 sized areas. as if the old e3 demo represents 90% of that environment. the fact that they are saying that is not the case has me extremely excited. if its almost as big as they are letting on, it should be fantastic.

mmm customization

Instead of proper scifi look for attachments for weapons, they use modern looking scopes and holo-sights /facepalm. Weapons at least look nice.

EDIT for all people expecting Destiny to be big: Remember it is a cross-gen game, made with previous-gen limitations in mind most likely.

Is there 3rd person perspective support in this game? Just interested. It looks so good though. Can't wait for its release.

This is the only game right now between the two systems (PS4 and Xbox One) that I plan on getting Destiny both on. I have both versions pre-ordered and both beta keys ready and waiting!

My Destiny is ready!

Well, Titanfall's had a lot more media on it as well as a huge marketing push given it's closer to release.

Once Activision ratchets up the marketing campaign for Destiny, we'll be seeing a lot of talk on it. Count on it.
or you know the big obvious thing, word of mouth. its been played by public.

I don't believe so. I actually think it's better for a game to focus on one perspective and one perspective only. It's incredibly hard to make a game that can support first and third person - and usually one perspective is incredibly useless and the animations are usually horrid.

With that said, Bungie is a master at making first person style games. There should be no worries where that is concerned.

I'm guessing each world/level will be a decent sized sandbox environment, but you're right.

I think I remember reading that there is a hub area in which you can see your character in 3rd person, but for normal gameplay I don't think there is.
