No Man's Sky announced - Hello Games (VGX)

I like how this generation seems to have more scifi games and less of contemporary warfare. There can never be enough space games.

Man, I really wish Destiny would have space combat and seamless transition between space and planets' surfaces.
Is this confirmed? It's something I've really been hoping is in Destiny, but I haven't been paying as much attention as I did to say, Halo Reach.

My only demand is still Rift support. If this is an entirely first person perspective game, there's no excuse not to have it, even if it's just experimental. I've played a number of simple unity demos where you're in a cockpit or walking around a foreign land, and the idea of being able to travel vast distances while wearing the headset screams immersion to me.

Here's hoping.

I hate this procedural shit. How about Developers actually start paying attention to things like level design and actually make an effort to specifically tailor levels for maximum enjoyment. Procedurally designed levels and areas will never ever be as good.
Nah, procedural is more interesting than curated levels, I think.

Pretty awesome. Lots of discovery abounds.

But what's the depth of generation I wonder? And what can you do?

Super plus points for a game in a procedurally generated universe where you can find a unique abandoned ruins underwater, and go through it, fight procedurally generated monsters and bosses to pick up procedurally generated loot and bring back to your ship, go back to your home base, and start building up the home base, with a garage with your own set of ships in there.

And while that sounds completely unreasonable, it also almost seems like what the trailer is hinting at.

I enjoyed this.

The Starbound and Mirror Moon EP comparisons are spot on. Though this seems to have much bigger production values, obviously.

Wait! So this is an MMO game? If it is then I practically have the game I'm going to play the most in the coming years. I wish CCP would do a tie in game like this for EvE.
Also I don't think Destiny has anything to worry about. This game might get space exploration perfectly, but Destiny still going to have a kick-ass pvp, Halo-style multiplayer, and probably will excell in game mechanics too.

Also, imagine if there's some kind of building in this game! GAF town anyone?

This game right here is exactly what I was thinking about when I was on my indie crusade. I feel the Indie business is going to be booming soon as they become more risk worthy and gain more and more resources, I'm not sure completely if this studio is more established due to their previous games but one look at this game is already shaping up next gen very well.

I still firmly believe that spending $400-$500 on a console to get these experiences are warranted purchases. I don't care if they are on PC for a cheaper price, with how social next gen consoles are...The exposure these games will get will sky rocket indie development faster than ever just because of that. I feel indie is the future that will be creating those AAA experiences that we pay $60 for which are riddled with bugs and glitches for the sake of a franchise.

Oh my god. Game looks promising. And how promising! And only thing that makes me worry is that the world will feel empty. You have this stuff, but there is no meaning behind it. I cannot wait to find out more about it.

(At least the trailer shows me what to expect from the game unlike Destiny.)

I'm loving this new renaissance of space games. With this, Star Citizen, and Elite, it's a good time to be a gamer no matter what platform you own.

Game is looking incredibly great!
With this and Star Citizen, Elite and Limit Theory on the horizon, It such a good time to be a fan of space sims.

And the fact that only four people are working on it doesn't mean that it's vapourware.
Just look at Limit Theory, it's basically an one-man project and it's coming along just fine:

Don't forget that games with procedurally generated game worlds (this game, Elite and Limit Theory) can be developed much faster than games with hand crafted game worlds (Star Citizen).

They made a point to call it "next-gen". Doubt they would've if it's PC only.

Star Citizen is also described at 'Next-Generation' on their website, it depends on the context. But I also doubt it as well. It wouldn't surprise me if an Early Access was only on Steam due to that system existing, but if they made Joe Danger for 5+ platforms with only 2 people, they can release this for 3 platforms simultaneously.

So many questions though.

At the moment I'm imagining its a kind of player vs environment, Journey type of experience, but less directed, more random. Interspersed with space traversal and combat (?)

My developer head was a bit unsatisfied with the nature of the land to space transition. Raised questions in my head about whether it was on rails or not. Maybe it's just not fully implemented yet, but they avoided showing 'the hard bit' - the planet diminishing under you as you travel upward. Hopefully it's fully 'freeform' though.

Basically sounds like starforge - another indie procedural sci fi space explorer - only they decided to show off water and ships instead of crafting and land vehicles. Starforge to me seems more interesting though.

Eitherway, I love you my dear Indies.

I think the "4 devs only" is possible because it is procedurally generated. Once they get their code the way they like it, the size of the universe doesn't matter because they can generate more on the fly.

Btw I always thought the best model for a game would be to have semi-autogenerated content. The content would be procedurally generated, but by the developers. That way they could produce a lot of content but be able to release only the best stuff. It's like what I do with character looks in games that have a lot of customizable options. I keep randomly generating new looks until I get one I like.

Not really getting the amazing response to this particular reveal. The procedural stuff looked exactly that "procedural" which in turned made everything a little generic. It just felt a bit lackluster to me. It is impressive for the team size and possible scope of the final product though and I do love exploring. Hopefully the game proves my initial reaction wrong and it turns out to be as amazing as many of you think it will be.

At least previously with Joe Danger, 2: The Movie and Touch, Hello Games have used their own engine, and based on those platforms it's been working extremely well in multi platform circumstances already.

Since I don't see it here in the threat, Shadid confirmed on Twitter that this was indeed the video he was raving over the other day.

Wow that looked incredible. My jaw was on the floor the whole time, just amazing.

I hope Destiny allows seamless flight planet to planet cause if not they just got outworked by 4 people.

Why are people comparing this with Destiny it looks nothing even remotely the same.

It's just the whole "space adventures" thing. I don't think Bungie's done a good job of showing Destiny's universe and why it's supposed to be some epic tale of whatever the hell. The No Man's Sky trailer feels immediately grand in a way Destiny hasn't captured thus far. Sure one's a shooter and the other seems to be heavy on exploration, but y'know.....Comparisons gonna compare.

It's still like comparing minecraft to borderlands

Oooh that looks very interesting, I'm going to follow that closely. The more space games we get the better, let the good times roll!

The problem is: Bungie is always telling about how the player can explore the solar system, how open the world is. But at the end they haven't shown nothing about this. No Man's Sky came out of nowhere and showed the stuff, Bungie is always talking about since the unveiling of Destiny. That's why I'm comparing those two.

Minecraft, though? That's a more odd comparison IMO. Aside from "procedurally generated," there doesn't seem to be any Minecraft here.

And I'm sure the comparisons will go away in due time. I rather like them, to be honest, because maybe it'll make Bungie actually show us something interesting.

Correct me if I am wrong, but Minecraft had basically two people working on it at the start. Notch, a music/sound person (C418), and maybe one other person helping occasionally.

Minecraft ended up not being vaporware, and has become a pretty well-known and popular game. :)

Dismissing a group merely because they have 4 people seems pretty insulting. Maybe they won't succeed, but group size does not guarantee success or failure.

Minecraft also didn't debut on cable TV.

I like how all the new space games are being made without a publisher. God help us when they start making them to and try to incorporate the COD formula as they grow more popular

So, GAF warming up to indie games yet?

Seriously. This looks ten times as interesting than the average AAA blockbuster.

I feel exactly the same.
Hope it will be great.

While watching the trailer, I was mostly thinking "Meh", until...

GIANT FUCKING SNAKE.

I am always highly skeptical of games that are procedurally generated. You will always reach a plateau where you have literally seen it all, just reformed to look slightly different.

Cautiously optimistic.
