And I can't find steel ANYWHERE.
Steel is Iron + Coal at a metalworking station. You need to have beaten the first boss for it to show up, so if you're using someone else's work station it won't appear on the list.

omg, thank you

....I don't like the charcoal change.
They take away wood as fuel..so people could actually use the wood to craft because too many people were using it as fuel. Now they add it back with an even worse ratio... so wood will be even rarer.
Yep, pretty much.
An actual renewable fuel source is desperately needed. Either that or just make coal ridiculously common. The latter probably makes more sense.
Ferrio, please. Stop. Now you're just babel'ing.
As I mentioned last night, screenshots of my current base of operations;
Tried a few things out I used in Terraria (the columns at the front, greenhouse, etc.). Not bad for not using any difficult-to-obtain materials. In fact, there's nothing even off planet in there since I haven't found enough coal to leave yet.

Hopefully the official version looks better.
Beautiful! As a bonus, I didn't know you could stack furnaces on top of each other, that's going to come in handy to cut times after mining sprees.
I saw somebody on GAF server had done it and realized that being able to smelt a shitload of stuff at the same time would eliminate a lot of my downtime. I dunno if it remembers what's in a furnace upon logging out (I'll have to try it) but in theory you could just create a huge foundry with stacks of furnaces and just store all of your bars in there, throwing ore in forgetting it.

Anyone have a good site for .abc files?
I found a few... but one I downloaded would crash my starbound. (Never gonna give you up)

I found that waaay funnier than it had any right to be, simply because it came out of nowhere.
same here, but I love lame jokes like that

My friend was asking me yesterday if the huge repository of ABC music files people have made for Lord of the Rings Online would work for Starbound. I didn't know the answer, but I sure hope so.
// Chomper mod

Okay, here it is. My first ever mod.
It's a handheld block chomping tool that will dig 4x4 (or 3x3 if shift is held). It's a recipe for the crafting table and costs 10 iron and 60 pixels. This should make it easy to get, and then you'll be able to make walking tunnels a little faster. Give me some feedback if you use it.

The player.config is included if this is your first mod, and if it's not you can enter this into the config file.
What speed does it mine at? In comparison to the various picks?
Thanks fanboi! Also how do i craft better armor? I have iron right now and nothing else is in my anvil
went to a tier 1 moon expecting a decent amount of coal.
in my first outing, I found more platinum than coal. 93:49. what is platinum used for anyway? and why does it look like silver?
also, any one else disappointed that moons have molten cores?
Why is that disappointing?
I found this legendary tomb, featured in the trailer.
Huge amount of high-level weapons [mostly two-handed]. I don't even know what to do with all of those, I could drop a chest off on the GAF planet if people are interested.
One of the best things about this game is the monster sounds. Tons of them are just some guys making fart noises, it's so ridiculous it makes me laugh.
The green penis monsters on my planet make squishy fart noises.
It's kind of upsetting.

that's definitely a dad joke

Yes! Now to figure out how to affect the stats...
Also..can I make the weapons longer? Sorry...for these questions.
Anyway, good news everyone! The devs noticed my hairstyle mod and want to add them into the game officially! Messaging with Tiy right now.
The plant growing area to the right looked like a Christmas tree to me. So now it looks more like a Christmas tree.

Sorry I didn't answer. Glad someone helped you out! It was pretty late for me and I fell asleep.

My best friend got me this game for my birthday and I knew nothing about it. I was pretty disappointed to find out that it's essentially terraria. I haven't played terraria, but I'm not that into minecraft-like games. Are there any major differences that make it stand out from other games like it?
- Increased difficulty; Terraria was easy as shit after you got a little armor and a decent weapon, but Starbound has multiple galactic sectors with increased difficulty.
- More environmental variety: Terraria really only had 5 biomes; forest, desert, corruption, hell and jungle. Maybe we can count the dungeon as a 6th. They later added ice and crimson, but the crimson was just a red replacement for the corruption so it doesn't really count. Starbound, on the otherhand, has Forest, Jungle, Ice, Moon, arid, desert, ocean and who knows how many others we haven't seen. Plus, Mini-biomes that occur within them (for example, an oasis in the desert). And if we count Terraria's dungeon as a biome, then we have to consider all the mini-dungeons all over Starbound too.
- Stronger survival aspect: In Terraria, all you have to really worry about is not getting killed by zombies on the first night and you're usually able to progress without any survival aspects. Starbound requires you to watch your food and temperature to survive. Might also be different atmospheres and gravity levels later.
- More weapons / armor / races / building materials. Yeah, it's just 'more', but it still counts for something.
- Not programmed by one guy who likes to take month long breaks and hits his limit pretty quick (the networking in Terraria is dismal, for instance). The support over this first week has been pretty damn quick.
- Very modable. People are already doing very cool things in this thread. Terraria had mods, but the developer never really embraced that part of the community and provided no support for it.
And beyond that, lots of 'little things' that just fit nicely into the sandbox; musical instruments, ship customization, monster capturing, fossils (after launch), etc.
Also, I fail to see how being "A better Terraria" is anything wrong, especially when Terraria was in developmental limbo for a year and ended up still being pretty 'meh' worthy after their 'biggest patch ever'.

Holy shit they have a ton of songs...
Yeah, the Fat Lute was pretty much considered the site for .abc files when I played LotRO. It used to be better organized and maintained (for example, there's a lot of spelling errors, especially annoying with duplicate artists), but obviously it's a work in progress now. Still, the music is there so that counts for something. Just make sure when you're looking that you find 'solo' arrangements unless you'll be playing a specific part with others.
Woohoo, congrats!
That's awesome!
Sweet. Its great the devs are paying attention to the mods that are out there.
Most Excellent.
I think I am going to stop trying out mods..I am just getting frustrated lol!
On the initial GAF planet before the wipe, I was considering dismantling the USMC prison there for all the cool mats.
As I mentioned last night, screenshots of my current base of operations;
What can I do with all these flower petals and brains I've been collecting?
How do you know what's solo?

I love your little skyway there. So simple to do, yet I would have never thought to do it. will be copping it however.
Bonus: Here's the world; a lot of the stuff out there was just stuff I saw other people had done and wanted a copy in my world, but most of it is mine.
I've gone to the NeoGAF server but I'm not sure I'm on the right planet; the spawn point has only a smallish house. What's the actual NeoGAF prime planet? (perhaps it bears adding it to the OP?).
I have a new Starbound update downloading now. I'm surprised it's not being talked about in here (unless I just missed it from earlier today or something).
