• Hey Guest. Check out your NeoGAF Wrapped 2025 results here!

Starbound Beta Thread - Begins December 4th!

I've gone to the NeoGAF server but I'm not sure I'm on the right planet; the spawn point has only a smallish house. What's the actual NeoGAF prime planet? (perhaps it bears adding it to the OP?).

Also, is it just me or going back to your ship seems to refill all of your hunger meter and keep it at max?

....I don't like the charcoal change.

They take away wood as fuel..so people could actually use the wood to craft because too many people were using it as fuel. Now they add it back with an even worse ratio... so wood will be even rarer.

But that's not why they took it at all. They took it away because it completely trivialized the entire fuel mechanic. Giving it a worse ratio to alleviate that problem makes a lot of sense.

People seem to forget that jumping inside a planetary system is just one fuel. That's five wood.

Yep, pretty much.

An actual renewable fuel source is desperately needed. Either that or just make coal ridiculously common. The latter probably makes more sense.

But wood is already renewable if you don't dig the blocks the trees stand on.

Ferrio, please. Stop. Now you're just babel'ing.

Now that's the Retro we know and love. :D

As I mentioned last night, screenshots of my current base of operations;

Tried a few things out I used in Terraria (the columns at the front, greenhouse, etc.). Not bad for not using any difficult-to-obtain materials. In fact, there's nothing even off planet in there since I haven't found enough coal to leave yet.

Beautiful! As a bonus, I didn't know you could stack furnaces on top of each other, that's going to come in handy to cut times after mining sprees.

Does you planetary (not solar) system not have any other celestial bodies? As a last resort, the GAF server should either have more coal in the planet you're assigned to, or you can ask someone for it (if I'm online I'll be glad to, my character right now is Weltall).

I recorded myself finding a castle on my starting planet, it was ~30 minutes away to the left and more than an hour to the right. My starting planet was really big, but not infinite.

I had my microphone muted during the stream but I got pretty excited, you can hear other guys in mumble discussing it. Pretty awesome that this game makes stuff like that. Ignore my manual item movement, didn't know about shift-clicking at the time.

Hopefully the official version looks better.

Yup, hope so. I see they gave the modder credit in there. Good idea, that's going to keep motivating people to make cool stuff for the game.

Here's the pastebin:

- Nerf the hell out of birds, they no longer attack you at long range, lower damage, don't follow you forever.
- Monster projectiles across the board better balanced
- Shields better balanced
- Early armors better balanced
- Melee weapons better balanced
- Ores better balanced
-AI improvements
- you can now craft lanterns (similar to sixxes' lantern mod!)
- you can now craft a new back armor to help light caves
- fixed the bubble gun crashing on mouse over
- improve grass ( Suggestion by Dracyoshi)
- You are now invincible on your ship (this requires a new character)
- You need to be hit a lot harder to get knocked back
- some UI updates
- Drills now destroy 3x3 blocks
- Other misc changes

I saw somebody on GAF server had done it and realized that being able to smelt a shitload of stuff at the same time would eliminate a lot of my downtime. I dunno if it remembers what's in a furnace upon logging out (I'll have to try it) but in theory you could just create a huge foundry with stacks of furnaces and just store all of your bars in there, throwing ore in forgetting it.

It should. My game crashed when I had like 50 meats in the campfire and when I returned they were all still there.

Anyone have a good site for .abc files?

I found a few... but one I downloaded would crash my starbound. (Never gonna give you up)

Okay, here it is. My first ever mod.

lsF40B8.png

It's a handheld block chomping tool that will dig 4x4 (or 3x3 if shift is held). It's a recipe for the crafting table and costs 10 iron and 60 pixels. This should make it easy to get, and then you'll be able to make walking tunnels a little faster. Give me some feedback if you use it.

https://www.dropbox.com/s/eutvvioxaim8ugl/Chomper.rar

The player.config is included if this is your first mod, and if it's not you can enter this into the config file.

Code:
 // Chomper mod
      { "item" : "chomper" },
      // Chomper mod end

What speed does it mine at? In comparison to the various picks?

I found this legendary tomb, featured in the trailer.

Huge amount of high-level weapons [mostly two-handed]. I don't even know what to do with all of those, I could drop a chest off on the GAF planet if people are interested.

went to a tier 1 moon expecting a decent amount of coal.

in my first outing, I found more platinum than coal. 93:49. what is platinum used for anyway? and why does it look like silver?

also, any one else disappointed that moons have molten cores?

Why is that disappointing?

these moon biomes are barren wastelands. similar to our moon, which has a core that is not molten to the same scale as a regular planet. sure the moons here are weird, with slime and so forth potentially inside, but i'm just being a nerd here when i see that a moon with such a core, maybe make it smaller.

One of the best things about this game is the monster sounds. Tons of them are just some guys making fart noises, it's so ridiculous it makes me laugh.

thefatlute.eu

that's definitely a dad joke

Which is funny because I tell everyone I inherited my sense of humor from my father (who's actually worse, if you can believe it).

The green penis monsters on my planet make squishy fart noises.

It's kind of upsetting.

I am pretty sure I went to exactly the same planet I stored my shit on before character wipes, and nothing is there. Not that I'm upset. I have more shit now than I did then. And the planet is now full of gold and silver.

Got the beacon anyway. So I guess it will be time to GAF server.

My best friend got me this game for my birthday and I knew nothing about it. I was pretty disappointed to find out that it's essentially terraria. I haven't played terraria, but I'm not that into minecraft-like games. Are there any major differences that make it stand out from other games like it?

Yes! Now to figure out how to affect the stats...

Also..can I make the weapons longer? Sorry...for these questions.

Sorry I didn't answer. Glad someone helped you out! It was pretty late for me and I fell asleep.

Anyway, good news everyone! The devs noticed my hairstyle mod and want to add them into the game officially! Messaging with Tiy right now.

I made a paint tool. Wanted to see how it works. It has infinite use. Nothing seems to fuel it, and you can cycle through colors easily with right click. It can't paint everything, but it seems to hit crafted back walls and some crafted blocks, like wood planks. Figured I'd get on the server to mess around with it.

The plant growing area to the right looked like a Christmas tree to me. So now it looks more like a Christmas tree.

That's awesome!

Sweet. Its great the devs are paying attention to the mods that are out there.

From a few pages ago:
- Increased difficulty; Terraria was easy as shit after you got a little armor and a decent weapon, but Starbound has multiple galactic sectors with increased difficulty.

- More environmental variety: Terraria really only had 5 biomes; forest, desert, corruption, hell and jungle. Maybe we can count the dungeon as a 6th. They later added ice and crimson, but the crimson was just a red replacement for the corruption so it doesn't really count. Starbound, on the otherhand, has Forest, Jungle, Ice, Moon, arid, desert, ocean and who knows how many others we haven't seen. Plus, Mini-biomes that occur within them (for example, an oasis in the desert). And if we count Terraria's dungeon as a biome, then we have to consider all the mini-dungeons all over Starbound too.

- Stronger survival aspect: In Terraria, all you have to really worry about is not getting killed by zombies on the first night and you're usually able to progress without any survival aspects. Starbound requires you to watch your food and temperature to survive. Might also be different atmospheres and gravity levels later.

- More weapons / armor / races / building materials. Yeah, it's just 'more', but it still counts for something.

- Not programmed by one guy who likes to take month long breaks and hits his limit pretty quick (the networking in Terraria is dismal, for instance). The support over this first week has been pretty damn quick.

- Very modable. People are already doing very cool things in this thread. Terraria had mods, but the developer never really embraced that part of the community and provided no support for it.

And beyond that, lots of 'little things' that just fit nicely into the sandbox; musical instruments, ship customization, monster capturing, fossils (after launch), etc.

Also, I fail to see how being "A better Terraria" is anything wrong, especially when Terraria was in developmental limbo for a year and ended up still being pretty 'meh' worthy after their 'biggest patch ever'.

All that said, these kind of games just may not be something that clicks with you. There's nothing wrong with that. I don't like MOBAs, have never understood the attraction or fascination. It's just not my cup of tea.

Most Excellent.

Holy shit they have a ton of songs...

Yeah, the Fat Lute was pretty much considered the site for .abc files when I played LotRO. It used to be better organized and maintained (for example, there's a lot of spelling errors, especially annoying with duplicate artists), but obviously it's a work in progress now. Still, the music is there so that counts for something. Just make sure when you're looking that you find 'solo' arrangements unless you'll be playing a specific part with others.

How do you know what's solo?

Woohoo, congrats!

That's awesome!

Most Excellent.

I know, I'm really excited! Hopefully soon we'll be able to use them in MP without worry of being bald. (Which is what really makes me excited about having these included officially).

I think I am going to stop trying out mods..I am just getting frustrated lol!

But that's part of the CHARM! ... in another life I must have been a programmer, but for now I'm just an artist with amateur programmer leanings.

On the initial GAF planet before the wipe, I was considering dismantling the USMC prison there for all the cool mats.

This is pretty much everything I do - I get a lot of basic mats but for my own house I prefer to get the really cool stolen things like lights and furniture and tech.

As I mentioned last night, screenshots of my current base of operations;

I love your little skyway there. So simple to do, yet I would have never thought to do it. will be copping it however.

What can I do with all these flower petals and brains I've been collecting?

Flower petals can be made into dye (assuming you have the glass to craft the bottle with). So far I haven't been able to dye anything though. Not sure if dying is implemented yet.

How do you know what's solo?

It'll say "Part - Solo", like this, or sometimes "Melody" or something along those lines (again, the site hasn't been maintained for a while so it's messy), whereas others will have specific instruments namedlike this, meaning each individual piece is meant to be played by a different instrument.

What can I do with all these flower petals and brains I've been collecting?

I believe petals + glass = dye. I haven't messed around with it too much. Not 100% sure, but I think the brains are related to a boss. I haven't gotten that far yet.

Thanks. The big draw for me in Terraria wasn't the combat or exploration (though I certainly enjoyed those immensely) but the building. That's why the last Terraria patch actually ended up being a disappointment; he added a bunch of new stuff, but a lot of it was broken or half assed. Even with that, I still made some pretty cool stuff. HaRyu will have to post screencaps of it since they were on the GAF server.

Here's my Terraria city (yes, city) screenshot.
Bonus: Here's the world; a lot of the stuff out there was just stuff I saw other people had done and wanted a copy in my world, but most of it is mine.

present main gaf planet is: -39112236 -19754836
there is a main building, x-mas tree, magma core lab, endless stairway to heaven

some people spawned at the beginning on another planet: 78690512 -3385362
there is a small house and some tunnels

I could finally manage to make my ship a bit comfy - I hope you appreciate the Order 1886 bars in the screenshot

I have a new Starbound update downloading now. I'm surprised it's not being talked about in here (unless I just missed it from earlier today or something).
