OG Xbox, one of the most innovative consoles created so what happened?

you seem to have misspelled Dreamcast

As for the xbox, I would look at things like the included harddrive and systemlink over LAN

I've heard a lot about him but what exactly were the changes he made when he took over?

Basically he changed the direction of the Xbox brand from the hardcore gamer's haven to a brand chasing the casual crowd the Wii had attracted. Developers like Bungie left, they closed studios like FASA and Ensemble, they quit publishing any retails titles that weren't safe bets like Halo and Gears, and the focus became Kinect, Kinect, Kinect.

It was also under his watch that MS tried to screw people with online check-ins and blocking used games. I could name many other things that happened or things that should have happened that didn't under his watch but I don't have that much time.

People can say he didn't make every single decision on his own, but whether or not it was his idea or someone else's, he approved everything that happened from the middle of 2007 until this past summer. If you look at the history of the Xbox brand, almost all of the stupid decisions and things people do not like happened while he was in control of the brand.

OG Xbox was innovative? Not really.

Xbox LIVE was innovative. The games library wasn't anything special. I prefer the 360's first few years of software and LIVE experience to any of the years on Xbox 1 (though Halo 2 is still my favorite Xbox brand game to date).

The last few years on the 360 are clearly the worst years of Xbox gaming as far as overall experience and exclusives go.

Game-wise it's debatable, but hardware-wise it was enormously innovative and influential in the console space: networking taken seriously (yes the Dreamcast did this first), built-in HDD, and a straightforward, powerful architecture that allowed developers to use tools familiar from PC development. The OG Xbox had a much bigger impact on consoles than its relatively small userbase would suggest.

Well, my thoughts on playing Crazy Taxi, Sonic Adventure, and Shenmue II were "Man, Dreamcast is an awesome system."

Easily. What a turnaround Sega pulled off with the launch of that system. Bought Sonic Adventure and NFL 2K at launch and was hooked. I re-bought a mint condition Dreamcast just to have it.

The only innovation I'll give Xbox is broadband online on consoles, and even before Live I remember playing Halo online through Gamespy.

My ps2 and network adapter for socom say xbox didn't innovate online.

My dream cast and pso also say that sega was too ahead of its time with the dc

Dreamcast was highly innovative, it just failed. The OG Xbox was sort of carrying on its legacy with progressive scan support on almost all games like the Dreamcast but took it a step further with HD support, 4 controller ports like Dreamcast, Internet connection hardware standard like the Dreamcast but took it a step further by disallowing phone modems to make sure of a minimum level of quality, and a focus on online connectivity even more than SEGA.

I read the first few lines of this post and thought he had confused dreamcast and xbox.

The first games listed in this post are all dreamcast games until you get to the mech

So what I learned so far from this thread:

Sega in the mid to late nineties and early two thousands were a very passionate game developing company that made some amazing games, but didn't know diddly squat about hardware and the console biz or had the proper budget for it....Microsoft had a lot of money and knew how to make a machine that could have a growing install base.

I think you mean dreamcast

They knew the console hardware/biz however they fucked up with shit like this:
AVGN descrbes it well

I've had so many good times with the original Xbox, system is a certified classic in my eyes. I know the PS2 library is better and all, but I spent way more time on my Xbox back in the day. Dat Xbox Live...

It's so weird that J Allard gets received so well nowadays. I mostly remember "hardcore" folks hating on him (and that time period of the 360) for Velocity Girl, lol hoodie, MS Points/Allards, no hard drive wtf, RROD, etc.

Did the dreadlock wig change people's minds or something?

Ha it does read like that but we know what happened to Sega, they trolled themselves with that crazy hardware business.

But i thought MS change was worth discussing.

I'm not surprised at the direction they want to take the Xbone, as they were upfront when entering the business about that being their endgame. I am extremely surprised at how poorly they handled things with the Xbone, though, especially after being so deft at marketing and messaging with the 360.

It's probably safe to say that, internally, MS has been going through some crazy shit.

Mattrick changed the perception.

I personally never saw anything wrong with J. That dude knew the future was online gaming and was able to secure Xbox LIVE as the leading online service for at least a decade.

The Xbox One, even with some much needed refinements (which will come), has the most potential of any console Microsoft has ever released. It is the most innovative and impressive console Microsoft has ever released, despite so people believing otherwise. It's not perfect, and these things rarely are, but what Microsoft has as a starting point, and can build from, is a whole lot more exciting than what they ever had with previous Xbox consoles.

And then there's things in the wings such as the plan to offer free dedicated servers to everybody making games for the Xbox One. I like to see companies take risks, and Microsoft has taken a few with the Xbox One, all of which I think make it a better, more exciting, system.

During that era Microsoft was firing on all cylinders with games like Crazy Taxi, Sonic Adventure, Shemue 2, gunvalkyrie, Panzer Dragoon, Mech Assualt, Crimson Skies just to name a few. But also brought us Live which changed console gaming forever. No longer was online gaming the home of pc players or Limited Dreamcast owners, now Everyone could connect and game against each other.

I still remember late night sessions against folks in Moto GP. Oroject Gotham Racing, and Mech Assualt as beung some of the most fun I had in gaming.

No Halo? No Ninja Gaiden? For shame, OP.

Xbox One has more potential than 360 did for its time? You can't be serious. For starters, 360 wasn't utilizing underpowered hardware.

I agree but its up to MS at this point. They need to show us not just talk about it. This somewhat reminds me of the endless talk of ps3 potential. The ps3 had all this potential with the cell and it never really differentiated itself much from the 360 graphically. If these dedicated servers and Kinect can bring us a innovative future we need to see it.

Nothing happened
MS tries hard to get into a new market then when settled in starts working on their agenda (monetizing and lowering the bar)
It's what they do

Its interesting to see someone bashing the xb1 hardware sporting a Nintendo avatar. Oh and if we are honest every console this generation is underpowered by a mile in comparison to modern affordable gpus.

On another note, what was so different about LIVE compared to the Dreamcast online solution? I never played Dreamcast online, but from some of the comments in here it would seem there was more difference than simply charging for the service?

As a Consumer Electronics device? Sure. As a Game Console though? No way.

OG Xbox was a phenomenal console. Some of my fondest memories involves dragging my Xbox and my 27" 250lbs CRT TV's to friends houses for 16 player system linked Halo 24-hour benders. Duke is the best controller ever created because yes I have gorilla hands and it fits them perfectly. Ninja Gaiden, Riddick, Halo, KOTOR and Psychonauts are some of the best games that came out last decade, and it laid the groundwork for a lot of the downloadable and online infrastructure that is commonplace today.

I dont think it sold well because we were in a transitional period were Japan still reigned dominant in the gaming industry. The west was still trying to make a name for itself, so Microsoft was branded as an outsider. Since it was not made in Japan, it didn't get the eastern support it needed to be successful.

The Xbox felt a lot like a brand new Sega console in many ways, especially in terms of the content offering and target demographic.
What is the target demographic of SEGA systems, anyway?

The SEGA Genesis seemed to be very focused on sports games. Even more action and arcade oriented titles than Nintendo. And a more Westernized and "mature" marketing focus. Working heavily to achieve Western aesthetics and sensibilities and a sense of "coolness" in contrast to Nintendo.

The SEGA Saturn seemed far more focused on the Japanese audience. Was home to many more Japanese RPGs than the Nintendo 64. And had an overall culture more similar seeming to the Super Nintendo than the Genesis. Even working with Atlus to make games like Princess Crown.

The SEGA Dreamcast seemed focused, more than ever, on arcade style gameplay. And had a great deal of focus on spectacle in general. Perhaps, to a larger degree, than even the PlayStation 2.

If there's anything that seem uniform throughout these eras in SEGA it's... arcade style gameplay? The target demographic of SEGA systems are arcade gamers, perhaps?

For better or worse, the next Xbox WAS pretty innovative before the hardcore gaming crowd had its say.

What we wound up with probably is much better for the vast majority of gamers, but it also is a console that's more in line with historical conventions.

I don't care at all for first person shooters.

One of the major reasons I would like an XBOX emulator is for Fatal Frame II.
That version of the game has exclusive content that I would like on the PC.

But it was....

And so is the PS4 and X1. They're using Jaguar CPU's, CPU's that are considered pretty low end now, they want to last until 2023. Imagine trying to play with a first gen i3 five years from now, that's basically how it's going to be.
