Super Smash Bros Wii U and 3DS Thread 3: Ridley's Believe It or Not!

I really really like Midna. I'd be happy with an assist trophy since that's her best chance of getting in.

Midna with Wolf Link could work as well, but that would be especially weird, considering there are not only two Links already, but one of them is the very Twilight Princess incarnation Wolf Link would also be.

There's no way in hell that a Pandora's Tower rep gets into Brawl is there?
Since apparently no one gave a damn about that game sadly it seems.
Sucks too since Aeron could easily fill the Simon Belmont slot move wise with his chain whip. Aside from that this song would be AMAZING to play a match to.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mJD3XIQaIg4

Hell honestly if we got any character from Xenoblade, Last Story, or Pandora's Tower it would be amazing. Those are about the only characters off the top of my head that I can accept to main if snake doesn't make it in again.

Why would anyone getting only the 3DS version cry about the graphics on the Wii U version? Or even care about graphics at all for that matter? Lol.

You guys are better off ignoring bait post like that. They start dumb arguments, and continues this stupid notion that we are only limited to one version foreva. Brawl was a great looking game for the Wii, and that was all while the PS3 and 360 were churning out higher poly count/res games too.

It will be no different here, the direction this game is taking visually is fantastic. I expect to play as well too.
Usually I do my best to avoid these kind of discussions, but it was getting annoying seeing Sah complain often about the WiiU version and lack of 3DS info every time there's a picture or update.

Plus I made the mistake of going on GAF not long after waking up, which is when I'm most cranky. Now let's put this silliness behind and brace ourselves for weekend SmashGAF.

Neiteio's post is brilliant. We need posts like these every once in a while so that people don't forget that Pac-Man, Mario, Sonic and Mega Man in one game is happening.
This is an absolutely crazy thought to any retro gamer. Four of the biggest characters from four different companies featured in the same game. Unbelievable.

Melee had a sort of slick techno aesthetic to it.
Brawl had a grittier, muted aesthetic to it (which was a little awkward with Toon Link in particular).
SSB4 has an action figure aesthetic that manages to make all these different characters look cohesive. It fits Toon Link and Rosalina equally well.

Best looking style yet.
Depends on the screenshot and character, I don't feel this artstyle does everything right. I do have a few complaints.

Sexulization

Mario for instance still looks the same as he always has, his designed hasn't really been altered in any way for Smash Bros. U, however, characters like Rosalina and Peach have had them altered in a way I'm not particularly a fond of. "How?" might you ask? Well, take a look at their official art and how they are portrayed in the video games.

In Smash Bros. U there are a few things that happen.

Vwg1gUY.jpg
SZ8Kq2m.jpg

l0CBHvr.jpg
QoFmgcA.png

1. Their breast size gets bigger than portrayed elsewhere, much bigger.
2. Their outfits are much more realistic than usual, but also much more skin tight.
3. Their faces are changed so that they lose the cartoony Mario look to make them look "attractive"?

In some aspects with Sakurai has a hold of these characters he's being a fanartist and making them unlike their official appearance. What I don't like is that it's unfair and awkward, I certainly don't play Smash for that, and I think it's weird that only the female characters get this treatment such as the butt shots we've gotten a few times.

Toon Link's Texture

Toon Link looks really weird in my opinion. He looks like play-doh, and his colors are darker than usual for some reason, particularly his skin color.

AfssJop.jpg

His skin color in Bloom Waker HD

And what's with his CG, anyways? The lips are so weird...

wolM2fL.png

Sonic's Face

I've mentioned this before, but still, his face looks very awkward and unlike Sonic. Unlike Sonic to even Lost World. The peachish colored area of his mouth is way too thick, it's suppose to be much flatter, in this it consumes parts of his eye and has too much depth. The smile is weird too.

xWmKBpw.jpg
Zzziolz.jpg

I'm also not understanding why Sonic looks like he's 3 years old in some aspects. Another smile I find odd. It looks like a sticker over his mouth.

Link

This is a big one. The style of Link in Smash Bros. U positively sucks eggs.

WzaK2YC.jpg
cvQWB9s.jpg
0NNOa0x.jpg

His Shield
Like holy crap, the texture on it makes it look like it's not even metal. Not only that, but it looks like it was made by Fisher Price. For some reason the shield has depth to it and engravings, I don't understand why it looks very odd and shields shouldn't have such things anyways for blocking purposes. Know what's hilarious about all of this? the 3DS does it better.

jeqdIGN.jpg

His Hair
His hair looks like he tried to dye it brown but ended up messing up because he slipped into the toilet bowl.

His Face
Probably the most bizarre thing is Link's face. He looks like Roseanne Barr or something.

cvQWB9s.jpg

His lips are far too thick, his eye textures look awful for an official game, and his face isn't leveled enough on all sides where it looks right.

His Clothes

0NNOa0x.jpg
poeKXZQ.jpg

Is Link a hobo now? or is this someone cosplaying him in outfits he bought on eBay?

1. Why is his outfit so blueish?
2. Why does the texture of his clothes (all of them) look like it's made of plastic?

Seriously it looks like he's not Link but someone cosplaying him.

Overall with the color sapped out of Link for unknown reasons and the spotty design overall, he looks like crap.

Donkey Kong

With this look they tried to make him look realistic but....give him poofy hair? Not sure why we're giving him poofy hair all of a sudden but OK.

HNHSUdz.jpg

9WIeNgY.jpg

At first glance you might notice his forearms, shoulders, and head. It looks like they tried to go hyper realistic with it but in turn it looks below even Wii U level. I also find it looks real spotty all around because the hair seems to be going in 3 different directions in one spot all over. Here's a pic of Donkey Kong by Retro on Wii U.

STb3zg3.jpg
[/IMG]

More importantly, what the heck is with his mouth and face? Are you a duck, Donkey Kong?

HNHSUdz.jpg
TB1N8um.jpg

And they also made his eyes either too tall or too wide that I can tell. He looks like he has crazy eyes compared to how he looks elsewhere.

Let's not get started on the 3DS version looking like youknowhat.

C6YQHIJ.jpg

Pikachu

He is incredibly long for some reason. Looks very odd and creepy.

SjttRIb.jpg
NRHjjnS.jpg

His mouth looks like a sticker and his face lacks any features Pikachu is known for so even his eyes look like stickers. His head is probably one of the most laziest things I've seen in Smash Bros. U.

Those are some of my complaints, but I've more or less accepted that this is what we'll be getting already.

Usually I do my best to avoid these kind of discussions, but it was getting annoying seeing Sah complain often about the WiiU version and lack of 3DS info every time there's a picture or update.

I have the right to complain.

Your attitude has changed from when you was lurking in the IRC. Good to see. :P

Anyway, I will no longer post here if wanting more 3DS coverage is an issue. Goodbye, see you at the next newcomer reveal!

I think you care a little bit too much.

My only complaint with the character designs is Link's face. Looks hideous.

We've seen pikachu's face change. Like I said, just because we haven't seen it doesn't mean it doesn't exist.

I do care a lot, not even going to deny that. I care about these characters and how they were designed and how they look in future iterations and I certainly care about Smash. Nintendo games have been a part of my life since I was very little, so their appearance is important to me. Especially so in a game I'll be spending 59.99$ + tax for.

Ok. So I don't agree with most of your post, but this point seems freaking ridiculous to me. I mean I don't even understand how anyone could recognise any of these points, because the changes are so minuscule. I mean their clothes are tighter? Are you talking about Peach's gloves or what? I would argue their faces look no more changed then any Mario character in Smash. Slightly more realistic but still highly cartoony.

And then the thing about the breasts? I realise I'm a male and maybe don't have the best eyes for these things (lol) but their breasts look honestly the same to me in all possible ways. Of all the complaints against Smash, sexulization is definitely the strangest to me.

It was Sakurai's plan all along. He's trying to tear Nintendo fans apart so that the company will fail and he won't have to make any more Smash games.

Sexualisation does seem like a weird thing to complain about in regards to Smash, at least if we're talking about Peach and Rosalina. I would kinda sorta get it if we were talking about Wii Fit Trainer and the butt shot, but I dunno. I just never really noticed.

Just throwing this in here, but the less of an overly cartoony "icon" a character is the more smash seems to "normalize" them.

Characters like Mario, Kirby, Pikachu etc stay largely as-is (texturing aside in some cases); in part because when you take an extremely stylized character and change their proportions too much, you get uncanny valley issues.

On the flip side characters that look less like a super cartoony icon do get normalized into a sort of default for smash; This includes Peach and Rosalina, yes. But it also includes Bowser, he looks even less like his regular model than either of the ladies.

--

As for the skintight clothes thing, didn't we have some hardcore skintight ass shots for both Fox & Snake? I'm not sure if it's meant to reduce polycount or what but a lot of Smash models have clothes go into "skintight as all fuck" territory from time to time. I'm honestly surprised we haven't seen Fox's fully rendered butt this time around
Though Sakurai seems to be too busy showing off his creepy ass teeth.

You don't see the caked on makeup, the more profound non-cartoony lips, the more exaggeration on facial features compared to for instance, say, Mario? and how the exaggeration here doesn't occur with him and only Rosalina and Peach? As for tighter, Rosalina and Peach's dresses are tighter in the chest area and upper torso.

cant we get along guys?
Well I apologised to him via Pm but I don't think he's read it yet. But as I said, moving on.

It was Sakurai's plan all along. He's trying to tear Nintendo fans apart so that the company will fail and he won't have to make any more Smash games.
Suddenly everything makes sense. Soon he'll cancel one version, but then change his mind. And finally, delay the game until it can be on PS5 level hardware for the handheld version.

Never doubt Sakurai's genius.

Honestly, if you're going to call sexualisation on characters having small, 100% concealed breasts instead of none at all, then you need to stop grasping at straws for complaints. They're women and women have those.

Where brains go to die indeed.

Edit: Caked on make up? You're making that argument over this game and not all of them?

This thread really does get dumb sometimes.

Although I don't entirely agree with Kokonoe, she's obviously talking about increased breast size bothering her; Not them having breasts to begin with. :/

Nope not seeing it. At all. Reposting the same pictures doesn't help. We disagree I guess

Edit: In fact I'd say Peach's lips seem more pronounced in the 3D world render to me.

Wait till y'all see the size of Captain Falcon's pecs. Wowzer!

You are grasping...and getting nothing but thin air.

You are grasping...and getting nothing but thin air.

Do you even have a argument? lol

Apart from the slight blush on her Smash model, I'm not seeing a significant difference.

First off, the increase in breasts isn't "slight", its 2-3 cups bigger. The makeup there is very profound compared to 3D World, it's there, you can't really miss it unless you are viewing GAF on a mobile phone. Her lips are much more profound as well, sexualized. The shape of her face is much more smooth, by that I mean in her usual look it has a bit of an edge in the face, they made her much more "attractive" by comparison, and this doesn't occur with Mario for instance. The mascara is more stylized to be more "pretty" as well.

Really, you don't give a character 2-3 cups size bigger if you aren't sexualizing her. It's not hard to understand.

Keep in mind that Falco (who seems to be rubbing the most people the wrong way), Young Link, Pichu, Dr. Mario, Roy and Ganondorf all made it into Melee for one reason, and one reason only - Sakurai's team had some more development time, so they added a couple more characters to the roster, but since the dev time was limited, they made clones.

And out of those clones, only Falco, Ganondorf and Young Link (now Toon Link) survived. That's only half of them.
Granted, Roy and Doc were at least planned for Brawl in some shape or form, but they still didn't make the cut in the end so they're a non-factor.

Also honestly, I still don't understand why people reduce characters onto one specific set of moves either - Wolf, Lucas and Luigi all have movesets that are completely unique. Wolf and Lucas share some similarities with Fox and Ness respectively, and Luigi has been a clone since Smash 64, but nobody thinks Luigi or Ganondorf should be cut. Heck even Toon Link gets less hate, and he's the cloniest of all clones. Why? Because they're more popular? Why do their fans "deserve" getting to play with their favorite characters, more than those of Falco, Lucas, Wolf etc.?

And that's not even considering completely unique characters that people want getting the axe. Lucario, Ike, Ice Climbers, ROB, Snake, Jigglypuff and Game & Watch seem to be the most popular "targets" for this. And I just don't understand it.

This is one of the main reasons I don't like coming to this thread often. It's always so negative. Constantly those talks about who should be removed from the roster and why, and how certain characters are more similar than others in terms of their movesets (even though in some cases that's only true for a fraction of moves), and whenever a new character gets revealed, people are spitting acid about how it's a waste of a slot and how their favorite character would be so much more deserving.

It's not identical movesets that are a problem so much as identical themes. Marth and Ike play very differently (I'm a Marth main, don't I know it!), but conceptually they are both blue-haired, caped and armoured swordswielders from the Fire Emblem series. You add Chrom and suddenly you have three blue-haired, caped and armoured swordswielders from the Fire Emblem series. That's why people have tolerance for Ganondorf, because in a weird way Ganondorf is a clone in a very different sense to the way that Falco is a clone - Ganondorf is conceptually different to Captain Falcon but for some bizarre reason has a very similar moveset, whereas Falco is conceptually similar to Fox despite having a different moveset. (although Gdorf still needs his own moveset. :( )

I imagine people argue for Lucario getting cut because if Pokemon gets a rep for the sixth gen, which it probably should, it then has 5 reps, which is rather a large amount and again is detracting from effort which could be spent on newer series. You can't cut Pikachu, the series' mascot, and Pokemon Trainer is pretty iconic, and Jigglypuff is basically set for 'legacy' reasons, so that makes Lucario the logical choice for the development teamdevelopment resources are pretty vulnerable. Jiggz was once intended to be the 'secondary mascot' of Pokemon, and had a pretty big showing in the anime, and was the main way Pokemon was targeted at girls. Now? Much less so, whereas Lucario has been given extra relevance by MegaLucario. I mean, I'd be pretty upset if they removed Jiggz as I personally would have to find a new second, but if it meant that Sin and Punishment fans got Saki in or Golden Sun fans got Isaac, well, I'd take one for the team.

Loads of people don't like Toon Link that much, so I'm not sure what your point is there. People argue for Snake getting cut because he's not a Nintendo character and unlike Sonic isn't even important to Nintendo history - his inclusion, again, takes time and resources away from characters who were actually important. Rob, Ice Climbers, and Game & Watch are all 'retro' characters, and some people would prefer the series to focus on Nintendo history.

I don't even agree with all of the examples you've listed, but I think it's more than reasonable for people to want a particular character to be removed - because it isn't a monadic desire, it's a dyadic one. Their desire for a character to be removed isn't just a desire for a character to be removed and nothing more, it's a desire for a character to be removed so that resources can be put towards a character they want more.

Until this moment I didn't even realize Peach or Rosalina had breasts.

It honestly just looks like the clothing's tighter.
