FFXIV 1.0 producer & co-designer of the original FF wants to make a new game

Hironobu Sakaguchi is most well known as the creator of the original Final Fantasy series, but he wasn’t alone. Hiromichi Tanaka, while more behind the scenes, put a lot of his skill and creativity as a designer in the first three chapters of the franchise, then he moved to the Seiken Densetsu series, worked as a the Producer and battle Planner of Xenogears, led Final Fantasy XI to its successful long run and the original Final Fantasy XIV to its terrible launch.
After leaving Square Enix due to health reasons in 2012, he joined Gung Ho Online Entertainment as a General Manager of the Development Division, and now he’s ready to make a new game, as he told 4Gamer in an interview.
"Since I’ve been in hiatus due to a long hospitalization in 2013, while being careful with my health, I want to create a new game at full throttle in 2014."

While many gamers haven’t forgiven Tanaka-san for the mistakes made with Final Fantasy XIV, it’s doubtless that his contribution to many classic Square Enix games and to the evolution of JRPGs in general (not to mention to the success of MMORPGs in Japan).
Personally, I’m very glad to hear that he’s finally better, and that he’s preparing to work on a new game. Hopefully Tanaka-san will be able to surprise us again very soon.

He needs to join Mistwalker, then we'd have him with the Gooch and they can hire Nobuo for music and Amano for art. Ultimate JRPG team? Yes, please.

I think that Tanaka is one of the greatest game designers in the world.

By the way, 1.0 > 2.0. Really, it is a shame that in three years Yoshi P actually made a worse game. I really wonder how the game would be like now if the original development team was still working on XIV.

I can't wait to see Tanaka's next game! Hopefully it is an RPG!

It wouldn't be running because nobody would play it and it wouldn't be making any money.

I personally welcome more Japanese games. Especially since Gungho has had a history of localizing theirs.

Given the capital that Gungo also has to spend on making a amazing PS4 game... I'd love to see what they could do with JRPG's, if they went that route.

This guy made some good games. FFXI was at its best when he was calling the shots. FFXIV 1.0 was at least a highly ambitious game, unlike 2.0. Will look out for anything he puts his hands on.

As long as it's not an MMORPG FF, sure. Just like Tokita(maybe even Kawazu), I'd love to see some of the older FF guys make NEW installments in the series. They can't be worse that, say, Toriyama.

XIV 1.0 was a mess because of the deadlines :/

There should be lots of new TRULY FF attempts from many Square Enix studios just like in the old times u.u

Londa's alt, spotted.

No way no how is 1.0 ever better than 2.0.

He should do a non-MMO, FF11 not withstanding his work seems more in that direction.

1.0 or the game leading up to 1.23 that Yoshi-P had a hand in?

And? Why doesn't the thread title also state FFXI producer? Stop trying to make him look bad, this man is a legend

I wasn't trying to make him look bad. I think the guy is amazing and I have already stated my view prior. I enjoyed what I played of FFXIV 1.0. I also enjoy FFXIV 2.0. so yah... chill out.

Tanaka is responsible for some great Final Fantasy games including FFXI, and I think he's worth the respect that he's earned.

But FFXIV Version 1.0 was absolutely terrible, and definitely a blemish on his record and the company's as well. I understand -some- of the rationale behind why very few people think it was better, but the game just didn't work. It was a sloppy and rushed mess that was an amalgam of old and new ideas converging in the worst of ways.

Nevertheless, I will be looking forward to what he'll be working on with GungHo.

Not to derail, but for those wanting a new FFXI, what does it offer that trumps XIV 2.0? Isn't it a lot more grindy and kinda impossible to play without a party?

It'd be insane if, instead of what they produce being XI-2, it ends up being I-2 and gives all of the classes character development and limit breaks or whatever

This guy just blows my mind sometimes. I can't believe he was pretty much responsible for Secret of Mana. He most definitely deserves a second shot.

Please do not let me serve on a jury. I am actually a crazy person.
Sure, bring it on.
Experiments sometimes fail, and that's okay. The only way to make a surefire shot is to stagnate.
Final Fantasy was in dire need of some good old stagnating, though. XIV 2.0, just like IX, brought nothing new into the fold, just some good old polish and 'feel'. One of five's okay.
But, still. Let's have a Tanaka game.
Or better yet, a Itou game :(

I really want to know the whole reason as to why FFXIV originally failed. I mean, we know the general idea, but I want the specifics and who did what. That said, I wouldn't mind Hiromichi Tanaka doing a new game so as long as it isn't rushed out in time.

Yoichi Wada decided to invoke the release of an MMORPG in it's Alpha Stage.

That's about it. I would bet $100 on that.

The reason I stopped playing FFXIV 1.0 was because:

1. Classes were generic WoW stuff and not having FF styled classes.
2. The lower end armor always looked like hobo rags and the color was dull on these armor.
3. Not enough stuff to do.
4. Confusing to play.

I thought the game itself was fine outside of having to spam attacks which was remedied when they added in auto-attack MUCH later. In some ways I miss 1.0 since the graphics were a lot better and I thought the OST was much better too. I think the combat I tried right before it went down forever for 2.0 I may have liked more.

Good lord no. His ideas are way too archaic. Once he came back to 11 after being 'fired' from 14, he undid everything that the game was doing right (more reward for time spent) and nearly killed the game in the name of his version of 'balance'.

He was pretty awful with FFXI, but I'd argue the current head is awful as well. If only FFXI was ran by a competent team that actually played the game it would have been 100,000x better.

Part of Tanaka's problem with 11 and 14 was he didn't care about community input, which is important in an MMO.

Yoshida on the other hand cares too much for community input.

Tanaka's "lack of care about community input" (if that's even a thing) is what made FFXI the gem we all remember, that was very successful. He didn't care about the bitching about difficulty, or bitching about grinding, or pacing, or lack of quests; and it couldn't have turned out better.

It is also what pushed away a lot of people and stopped it being a big hit.

FF11 wasn't difficult so much as a complete and utter time sink.
