GAF Wii Homebrew thread: Homebrew, emulators, USB disc installs! Easy tutorial!

I apologise if this question has been answered elsewhere, but all I really want to do is run emulators on the Wii U Gamepad without having to use the TV. Can I do this with the current state of homebrew?

I just want to play C64 games while the wife is watching Real Housewives of Bullshit Palace or whatever.

Nope, you can't.

i think this might be what you're looking for

don't think its been released yet though..

I started looking into hacking my Wii U Wii mode, but I want to check a few boxes, before I get into it:

Devolution requires a Wii and a Wii U at the same time to rip games? I have my Wii U here, some Wii games and a lot of Gamecube games and my gamecube - but no Wii at hand. It's at my sisters 250km away, so it would require quite a lot of planning to get my games, the Wii U and the Wii and all the games to the same place at the same time.

Can I just rip my cube-games when I'm at my sisters and use them on my Wii U, when I'm back home?

Now that my Wii is transferred to Wii U, I'm finally ready to hack my OG Wii. I notice that please.hackmii.com is down. Will it ever be back? Is there an alternative way to get the homebrew channel?

I did the twilight hack many years ago only to play import games ,much to my chagrin TvC was eventually localized. Anyway I don't know too much but I'd like to use Wiiware again since I want to buy stuff from it. So how does one retain homebrew without having to lose it when regaining access to Wiiware? I don't believe I've installed hbc unless the twilight hack does it automatically.

Twilight hack likely installed HBC. If you have it, go into it and upgrade it, then do a normal Nintendo system update. If you don't have it, do a normal Nintendo system update then do the letterbomb hack.

So your saying letting my Wii update from Ver. 4.2U to 4.3U with HBC installed won't mess with anything? I remember there was a homebrew app that would update your Wii Shopping channel only, but forget what it was called and if its been updated. Just did enough to be able to play Skyward Sword on 4.2U.

Yeah, it's the easiest way. The idea is that new HBC versions prevent their removal, but if you don't have it just do a Nintendo update to get the newest updates and shop channel then rehack it.

I tried to do that and it errored out. IIRC, I applied a patch from a homebrew app to disable Online updates and disc updates. Think it was StartPatch, but not sure. I followed the GAF guide to getting Skyward Sword to work on system 4.2U systems if that helps. Should I just unapply the hacks in StartPatch? Just making sure.

Yeah, startpatch or whatever was used to block the online updates should just remove those patches so you can do the update.

Was wondering how to disable but then thought, would B work as the inverse and sure enough it did. Thanks! Updated and reapplied patches with the 4.3U version of StartPatch and I'm good! Got unfinished business with the Wii Shopping Channel. :)

DIOS MIOS and my HDD don't play nice together at all so after a bit of searching I found out that you can in fact reinstall the original MIOS and it'll overwrite it, reenabling GCN play from the regular boot menu.

Does anybody know why I get this when trying to play GCN games via DIOS MIOS (Rebel Strike here)

Never had a problem with Wii games, using CFG Loader v70 with external HDD

Well that's good to know. After attempting to emulate Paper Mario: TTYD and it failing completely, I've been unable to play my GCN games from the Wii Menu. Guess I'll have to get that done at some point. :P

Anyone have a good suggestion for a cheap decently sized self powered HDD for the Wii? My friend wants to join the wonderful world of Wii homebrew and I'm going to get him something nice for a quick christmas gift.

Anything between 500 GB and 1 TB would be nice.

I have a LaCie Rikiki 500GB. Works great. Only downside is the sharp edges.

So since its now more than a year since the Kirby Dream Collection came out in America, and there is no sign of it here, I think I finally have to mod my pal Wii and start importing. One thing though, can I mod it so that I also can play gamecube games from other regions? Stuff like Baten Kaitos Origins?

Yes. With Priiloader.

Best use ModMii for the hacking process, won't get any easier than that.

Just bought the Kirby collection. I have transfered everything over to my Wii U, so I guess there is no real risk by making the Wii region free then?

I debated doing it for months, but I finally installed the Homebrew Channel on my Wii U tonight. Moved my hard drive and SD card over from the Wii, and now I have all GameCube and Wii games ready at the click of a button, along with my NES, SNES, and N64 virtual console games that were already there. It's nice.

I'm amazed at the ability to play GCN games with a Wii U Pro controller, haha.

Did a brief search on the website, but didn't see an option to disable just the Message Board part of the Wii. Have been having the "corrupted system files" message when restarting the Wii fairly often (just keep trying until it gets through), and from this suggestion to enter Maintenance Mode to get around a corrupt Message Board, that works. Since the Nintendo Channel is gone, there's no real reason to use the Message Board anymore, so would like to just disable in BootMii Bios or some other method to avoid the corrupted system files message.

Any ideas?

Wait, you can play GC games on Wii U via a soft mod?

Wait, you can play GC games on Wii U via a soft mod?

yep. even with a dualshock 3!

and the image quality is equivalent to, if not better than, the digital component output on the Gamecube. Basically, it's the ultimate way to play the games without resorting to dolphin.

and you can play on the gamepad too (obviously you still need to use a controller)

Just ordered a Wii U.
What do I need to soft-mod it and, again, what's the process to play NGC games (still got my old Wii, iirc it's needed). Is there an equivalent of Clipper's Wii HB GAF FAQ for the Wii U?

Question: I got a Wii U for Christmas and want to transfer my Wii data via the Wii Transfer Tool. My Wii is homebrewed with BootMii and Homebrew Channel and I can't access the Wii Shop Channel without performing a system update. I'm on 4.3U. What can I do? Can I update safely and access the Wii Shop? I'd like to keep my Wii hombrewed only to rip my games for Dolphin.

NTSC wii on 4.3u with fully up to date home brew. Got my son swap force for Xmas and it wants to run an update that says it will damage home brew consoles. When I run system update from wii menu it says no update available. Any way around this?

Make sure your homebrew channel is up to date, then update your Wii to the latest firmware.

That's it. Nothing extra tricky or anything else is involved. There is a small chance you may need to reinstall exploited ios if you use a USB loader, but that's not hard to do.

The update isn't a system update, it's just a random IOS update, the odds of one of these breaking your system are practically nil since the system menu contains it's own unique IOS.

Thank you so much! Everything went smoothly.

If I want to re-mod my wii from the ground up (it's running some very old software / wads) what is the best way to do it, step by step? I would also love access to GameCube games if possible!

Neither USB Loader GX nor Cfg are picking up my hard drive on vWii. The drive is detected in Wii U mode, and it's externally powered, so it shouldn't need a Y USB cable, correct? I'm kinda lost.

One of the tragedies of digital content on consoles is that none of the library functions are anywhere near as good as the 'box art' scrolling display of USB loader for Wii. In the case of the PS3 and PS4 they are substantially worse, imo.

Having all 25 of my (legally bought) Wii games in a big list with box art, disc art and play counts was just glorious. And so many sorting / display options, too. I don't know why other console makers don't go in for the 'physical box display' when you buy digitally. It makes you feel like you're missing less, in a way.

I will also be transferring my Wii stuff to a Wii U though, so hopefully that goes smoothly. Despite all of the advantages, I'm glad that the Wii U isn't hacked (fully) as I knew tons of people who pirated everything once it was, and unlike the Wii the Wii U can't afford any loss of sales at all.

successfully updated my Wii/HBC/BootMii and now I can do a transfer :D
will a bootmii nand backup allow me to keep the content on both systems? i don't care much about channels/VC games, just really wondering about game saves.

i hate how vWii doesn't have its own settings. I assume that it is upscaling 480p to 1080p(my TV says the source is 1080p), and I have to change which router I'm using in the Wii U settings before booting into vWii(although I doubt I'll ever connect to the internet on vWii after setting up the transfer but who knows)

you can have the content in both consoles but you can't ever enter the Wii shop on the old Wii because it will erase the games once you log in (it updates the console going by the Wii Shop's records)
you can use the Wii shop on the Wii U though since there's no problems on that side.
as long as you keep away from the shop on the old wii, everything's fine (i moved the wii shop to the last page in my wii just in case)

save files get duplicated to the Wii U Wii mode. the games act as if it was your first time when you play them but the saves work fine (i've replayed a couple of Wii games on Wii U and the saves were identical to how i had left them on Wii). the saves are never erased from the old Wii.

regarding the 480p thing, i believe that's how upscaling works. the old stuff is still 480p but the system sends a 1080p signal so your TV doesn't have to do anything extra. it also looks a bit better than just running the system on plain 480p. (iirc, the system would need to re-render the games to display them in true 1080p, like how VC re-renders N64 games in 480p oppsed to the original's 240p resolution)

How did you get it working with a ds3?!

How did you get it working with a ds3?!

iirc, you have to plug the DS3 with an USB cable to the Wii U's USB port (i used front) and then hold the L1 and R1 buttons for a bit. after that, the DS3's leds should be flashing and you can assign the controller to a player position the same way a Wii U pro controller would be set.

one thing is that the controller can't be synched to both a PS3 and Wii U at the same time. if you synch it back to the PS3, you have to repeat the procedure.

No worries, I have a ps3 controller that is only for PC gaming. Does this work without any homebrew in regular Wii U titles?

Yes, if the HDD is powered externally you don't need a Y cable, make sure the data cable in your HDD is pluged in the back of the console, top USB slot.

I have my console vertical, so that would be the one on the inside, correct? Because I have been using that one and my issues have persisted.

Is your HDD normally compatible with Wii? I only ask because I went through hell and back trying to find a HDD that my Wii would detect. Maybe Wii U compatibility is better and the VWii is still fussy?
