Super Smash Bros Wii U & 3DS Thread 4: New Year, Old Arguments

16 newcomers, half of them are top 12 in the game
LOL

(since we're talking about Toon Link, he's actually #9 on the tier list only counting newcomers but #13 overall)

Yeah...something is clearly wrong when after rob and peach, the last three tiers are almost all melee veterans(+lucas, ike, pokemon trainer, and sonic....)14 of them to be exact.

What's wrong with Link's model? I think it looks great. It wouldn't make much sense at all to give him exact Twilight Princess textures, since the atmosphere and tone in Smash nearly completely contrasts the former. He looks great, fellas. Stop your nitpicking! ;o

Pit, on the other hand, needs some serious touching up.
His face is wrong, he is too ugly. The artwork that was already posted looks great, but in-game he looks like Zac Effron in High School Musical. (Also in that shot you posted Link looks like La Toya Jackson)

Pit also looks weird, there is something about his skin, the clothes are fine, but I think the arms and face do not have enough details. Like too plain or something.

A fun lil' roster I whipped up, featuring a careful balance of characters I find plausible.

I was also OCD about symmetry when arranging the layout.

For example:

- The Metroid and Kid Icarus characters are next to one another due to shared heritage. So are Mysterious Murasame Castle and the Zelda series, the other half of Japan's "Famicon Four."

- Six Mario slots, six Zelda slots (with symmetry -- three "realistic," three "toon"), six Pokémon slots.

- The Pokémon characters are arranged on either side of the two Random buttons in the middle, with the mascots at opposite ends (Pikachu and Jigglypuff), the trainers second from either end (see the breakdown of each trainer's team near the bottom -- they're also symmetrical, representing Gen I and Gen VI, with type advantages), and the promoted Pokémon (Lucario and Mewtwo) near the middle. They're lined up as though they're two sides in a Pokémon battle!

- Villager, Wii Fit Trainer and Mii are together as "modern Nintendo," while Ice Climbers, R.O.B. and Mr. Game & Watch are together as "vintage Nintendo." In-between are the two captains, C. Falcon and Pikmin & Olimar.

- Two third-party characters at left end of bottom row; two third-party characters at right end of bottom row; Fire Emblem in the middle, with newcomer Chrom & Lucina near fellow newcomers Mega Man and Pac-Man.

- I tried to stagger the newcomers so that if they were at the start of one row, they'd be at the end of the next.

- I don't realistically expect Pokémon Trainer Y with Chespin, Braixen and Greninja. I'm not really expecting Ridley, K. Rool, Bowser Jr. or Toon Ganondorf, either. The other newcomers I find quite possible. But for the purposes of this roster, they're all workable. :)

I think Pit is actually ok. The pic quoted seems like an exception to the other photos on his page. These pics:

and

show him in better lighting and he looks alright. Maybe he's a little pale, and maybe his hair seems funny comparing it to Link's let's say, but other than that what's wrong with him? I thought in the quoted pic his eyes looked wack, but in these other ones they're alright. Points for the name-dropping though haha =)

<Response to Neiteio> Toon Ganondorf... I want to BELIEVE...

61 characters?!
I'm realistically expecting like 12 newcomers, so 49 slots, or 50 with Random.

But this is a "if they really went all-out while still being practical" scenario.

If you're wondering what I realistically expect:

Rosalina & Luma
Toon Zelda / Tetra
Dixie Kong
Palutena
Little Mac
Takamaru
Chrom & Lucina
Villager
Wii Fit Trainer
Mii
Mega Man
Pac-Man

And I do believe they can bring back all 39 from Brawl, plus Mewtwo and Roy, something they wanted to do with Brawl, judging by leftover files.

Together like Ice Climbers? How will that work out?

Chrom & Lucina wouldn't necessarily be like Ice Climbers, Pikmin & Olimar, or Rosalina & Luma. They'd be something all their own. Some blend of the above, perhaps, blocking for one another, following up each other's strikes.

The idea, of course, is to represent:

- Fire Emblem Awakening, one of the most critically acclaimed and commercially successful installments in the franchise. And the most recent, on the 3DS, with a stage in the 3DS version of Smash.

- The "Pair Up" concept that is new to Awakening.

- The father/daughter dynamic, the ties to Marth, and the time-traveling plot.

Imagine Sakurai unveiling them, standing back-to-back, their falchions parallel to one another. <3

YES!!

The only question is whether Sakurai is having any difficulty with Ice Climbers-style characters due to making a roster for both 3DS and WiiU.

I'm optimistic that the Ice Climbers -- and characters like them -- will return. In a way we already have one, in the form of Rosalina & Luma. Maybe even two, depending on how you look at Pikmin & Olimar.

Chrom & Lucina would move together, most likely, so at a glance they might look like taller Ice Climbers. But perhaps this wouldn't be a technical issue.

Together, they'd be so much more interesting than they would be apart.

Lucina should've had variable hair color in Awakening based on her other parent, like everyone else
then people wouldn't be whining about "wow another blue-haired sword wielder" all the time

I can't wrap my head around how 2 full sized characters can tag-team run around such an already crowded game full of confusion.

IC work because they're bright, colorful things that are small (And if P&M had gotten in I would say the same for them). Rose works because Luma is small and very different to her in appearance. But 2 adult sized blue sowrd-people?

Ehhh, for FE I would just expect them to put in the customizable Avatar character (female and male versions with changeable hair/ faces. ) and make em a Sword + Tome user to actually rep something other than blue headed sword fighters if they really wanted to rep Awakening. Ava unit was a new and cool thing in the games.

Just poppin in to say Happy new Years SmashGAF, things have been fun here ever since my account got accepted, here is to a great year of Sakurai trolling us.

The other parent being their...dad tho that doesn't apply for female Morgan lol. Considering chrom's strict taste lack of options, Lucina would be stuck between, blonde, red, brunette, and red female Robin aside.

Yeah, having two detailed models running around as one character seems problematic, especially if say, four people choose them in one match. ICs are simple by comparison.

Its funny in a sad way that if we do get Toon Zelda, we'll have 6 LoZ characters with half of them clones (Toon Link, Toon Zelda, Ganondorf) and the other half being Link, Zelda, and Sheik. Toon Ganondorf would be hilarious because it'd be a clone of a clone. That series just can't win when it comes to Smash. XD

Now that Zelda has been reworked, I don't see any way that Ganondorf doesn't get reworked.

People need to consider the possibility that the Phantom is summoning Zelda.

Wouldn't be the first time we missed something important. Just like the time we thought Rosalina was playable when in fact it was the Luma that was playable and she was just for show.

does this mean Pokemon Trainer is gonna fight while his Pokemon are in the background eating popcorn

I know it's highly unlikely, but I'd love to have Isaac in Smash 4. He's fairly unique compared to the other swordsmen, and his moveset could be a combination of physical sword-based attacks and offensive Psynergy skills.

Pleeeeaaaseee.

This Please!!

At this point I don't care if it's Isaac, Mathew, Felix or someone else I just want a playable Golden Sun character, but I know it's highly unlikely so a stage or at least more than one assist trophy would be fine.

hey man blonde Lucy sounds great
would also give me a real reason to make Maribelle her mother
(P.S. Sumia is hardly a brunette)

I have no Idea what color sumia's hair would be considered then lol...and I meant to put pink instead of red twice.

Are the "for Wii U" and "for 3DS" titles confirmed to be final? Or should we expect something else ya think?

That's what the official site calls them sooo....yup.

Man, the real downside to using models these days is that it's really hard to rip the sprites. First Ace Attorney 5 and now Fire Emblem Awakening... zzz...

oh yeah Olivia is an option, I didn't even notice you putting red twice though xD

which is weird because really I just want to get a red-hair Lucina

lol, we should count our blessings it isn't "NEW Super Smash Bros!" I guess.

To keep with the heritage of "Super" with SNES games and "64" with N64 games, I would've rather heard them call the games SSBU and SSB3D rather than having "for [platform]" be the title. It is probably the laziest name for a sequel in gaming.

I have no problem with the title having "For ____" system.

I do like the fact that the title for the 3DS version is more red while the Wii U one is more blue.
