Fighting Games Weekly | Jan 13-19 | Handsome fighters never lose majors

The subjectivity is all but explicit in the post I made. I'm simply trying to provide perspective. Instead of complaining about how much you don't like Chung (or any commentator), I think there's more merit in considering why people identify with that style of commentary instead. If you can sympathize, then you can appreciate it (and of course, there's a spectrum in terms of commentary). This makes you more tolerable as a person (both on and off the internet) and could alter your streaming experience for the better (rather than merely getting upset/anooyed or muting the stream anytime someone doesn't conform to your ideals does commentary).

We're all in this shit together. It's a community. A grassroots one at that. Nothing positive comes from denouncing the efforts of people trying to contribute any way they know how.

You my mans, a hunnid grand

The only way a community is gonna improve is by calling shit out and actively working on it. Tolerating shit commentary or real dumb policies from Arc because "hey, fighting games, nah mean?" doesn't promote growth, its stagnation. Its splashing around in your little puddle and then lookin' tight when Kotaku or whoever look at you funny. There's nothing positive or praise-worthy about that kind of attitude.

You, Kimosabae, are, dare I say, real

Fantastic post, 100% spot on

There are bigger issues to deal with than some guy saying haHA too much.

Precisely. Furthermore, my post is "calling out" the petty criticisms of FGC contributors that inhibit inclusiveness and tolerance (aspects that foster growth). What's that post calling out? That Lee Chung's commentary falls within the category of "dumb shit"? You're part of the problem.

But tolerance goes both ways Kimo. People should be open minded on why certain things turn off people or why people find such and such not entertaining. Just saying you are a hater and you don't like it just because you do that get it is not healthy either. Especially when it's broken down by race. We need to be open minded both ways.

Does everybody from nyc and that culture have to like Lee? Do I have to like every Filipino commentator? I would hope not. I think we have moved beyond that ( I have at least) . I think a lot of people are judging these things as individual entities. I find this individual entertaining or not, regardless of his race and background. And it's not a judgement of the actual person either, just his time on the stream. Nothing personal.

People should be free to honestly criticize things as well.

That said, it's just video games and commentary and nothing rely makes me turn off the stream audio. It's not super serious like that to me.

I do see your points as well though.

So what we really need is ESPN Classic no-commentary style streams for people who start to go crazy listening to any commentary at all.

(Seriously: pro sports commentary is the worst thing out there. FGC stream regulars have a long way to fall before they get that bad.)

Crazy I'm not trying to sound like a dick but... Do you not understand what "tolerance", "inclusiveness" or "embracing the spectrum" means or implies? You can't expect to like or appreciate everything about this human experience - but I think the moral standard demands that we try and understand others. Nothing I said suggests that people's criticisms of Chung fall on deaf ears.

FGC has legit issues, but anything Kotaku or others spin as negative because "it's not the way [we want it to] be" isn't one of them. FGC knows what should and shouldn't be done, they'll attend to it in their own way, not one that will appeal to someone else's ideal. If they don't like it, fuck 'em; there are thousands of other communities that would suit them better.

I'm all for being open minded to others and whatnot but choices shouldn't be heavily influenced by third parties.

I don't like it when people say a person is not real or not. I haven't heard that phrase since high school/early years of college.

Hearing this phrase now is laughable vs ten years ago where it felt like a question before I was going to do or accept something stupid or calling me weak/chicken.

Checking the numbers for Kumite in Tennessee with a week to go:

Notable players confirmed: J.Wong, F.Champ, Rog, Ricky, Neokarsh, Dieminion, Noel, Kinderparty, & Andre
Current Marvel pre-regs: 20-30

Stacked brackets incoming lol.

Hey as someone who grew up there I'm stunned Nashville* has a tournament attracting top players. But that town has changed dramatically since I lived there (way more interesting place now).

*That's a pretty expansive definition of Nashville they've got there.

The FGC made it this far by being who it wants to be, us. If it were to change then it wouldn't be as hype as it is. FGC has a lot of issues but those issues are what make it the FGC and will help it grow, besides flat out racism and misogyny. Once it has grown big enough, people will begin to recognize the merit of honesty/surrealism of the FGC.

I'm more talking toward jazz's comment about mostly white people not liking Lee, not your points. But your post was longer, hehe.

My points are in general about how people dismiss criticism, based not what is being pointed out, but because so and so doesn't get it, or they are not real enough or something.

I can understand and get why people like Lee. I still don't find it entertaining really. I respect it though. And his time is appreciated.

Its the attitude its indicative of. The old boys club "if you were real" "that's just the way things are" kinda defense that gets thrown at everything from institutionalized racism to half-baked memes as commentary. I get that change is hard, its scary, but that's the only way to improve. This means working on all the big things and well as the small every day things. That means calling out shit like "Asian hands" is a causal form of racism that makes them seem inhuman or "other". It means explaining to Aris that him being himself on the mic is actually detrimental to other players being comfortable.

Look, people aren't asking Lee Chung to become Joe Buck or some monotone shit, its just a plea to get better at what he's trying to do.

This is a joke post right?

Aside from Chung's penchant for sausage, I see no problem with occasional brief stints at commentary. But he does become tiresome after a while due to his lack of focus on the game and insightful commentary. Watching the stream would be far more interesting with a commentator who explains what's going on and explains the strategy of matchups, rather than cracking jokes the whole time and responding to stream chat.

You can actually learn a lot from commentary when it's about the game, when the commentator's focus is on cracking jokes, you're learning very little.

On a lighter note, I'm going to be on-hand at Apex all weekend taking photos. I'll be tweeting shots, as time permits, over the course of the weekend on the @apex_series twitter as well as my own.

Take a peek at the 2013 and 2012 galleries for an idea of what to expect.

I see there was another Flux blowup last night :-D

Saw that shit and it got me tight. How the fuck you gonna flip the fuck out and call that nigga bad and shit over getting bopped cause of your own mistakes? I really wish I was there and I wish it was me he was yelling at cause I swear to god I woulda popped the fuck on him for that.

Niggas need to control themselves over their game rage. Shit is annoying as fuck. Like relax bro it's a video game. and we at local too... Come on bro.

I'm brown and I love Ski and Chung. Fuck at me.

I'm late on this, but the 12th cooperation cup was awesome. Kokujin is too amazing. Someone please make a modern fighting game that he likes.

Is the gootecks and mike ross show any good?
2nd half of the show is basically a live Excellent Adventures. Worth it.

Just skip ahead until you see them sitting on a couch.

i guess the lee chung posts are behind us but I gotta say that my friends and I have all been victim to the HUH HAH virus and use it way too often when joking around

Flux is always whining. I swear that guy is the biggest dork in the FGC.

Flux is more likely mad at himself than anything, I know I'd be like that in his situation.

"HOW COULD I LOSE TO THAT SCRUB?" "I'm better than that." is my usual thought process.

Lee Chung's style of commentary is reminiscent of what I heard from the more animated people I frequently encountered when the fighting game scene was mostly the province of arcades. At times it was refreshing. Most of the time I could give or take it. On some occasions it was a little grating.

"Give or take" is probably how I would describe my reaction to Lee Chung's commentary most of the time. I neither love nor hate it, but I can understand the appeal. Even though I could probably do without the constant re-issuing of catchphrases, it's part of what makes him memorable, and like it or not, having a unique catchphrase or two is a thoroughly proven method of connecting with an audience.

Signed, a skinny white dude from Nowheresville, CA who loves Death Grips but understands why other people don't.

DUFF CITY ha HA

duff city is the best meme that he uses

just the phrase 'duff city' is hilarious to my brain for some reason

also the attachment of 'STUPID!' to stuff at. 'welcome to duff city, STUPID!" on ch fierces from dudley and balrog always make me crack up

lee chung does good commentary, he can be insightful about the game and patterns for folks he knows while also being a good energy/hype guy

i think sf has it's fair share of good commentators just by virtue of it being the biggest game. at every single major there's always at least one dude who is like a good combination of insightful (for local players at the very least), funny and energetic.

marvel is much worse in terms of acceptable commentators- a lot of folks try to be the hype guy because of yipes/ski/chris matrix/whoever else but fail because they aren't really charismatic in the same way. insightful commentary to the game is harder because it's much more free-flowing and getting a handle on the situation can be rough on folks who don't have extensive experience with the game or 'marvel' style games, which is more likely with a 2 year old game rather than a 5-6 year old game.

the game however does have a bit of a flow where there's downtime during combos to somewhat explain what happened which is what good commentators do. or just have fun chatting with the other guy, which is great for marvel because there's a lot of extremely dry, repetitive combos like lightning loops and fof loops that leave a lot of downtime that don't have much explanation required for the situation beforehand that put the other player into the combo.

ultimately everyone has different tastes for commentary and there is some level of standard but a lot of folks fulfill it on the SF side for sure, lee chung included. i personally love asshole, biased commentators but i know a lot of folks hate 'biased' commentary- it's absolutely hilarious. identifying what you like about someone's commentary is important and a really obvious part of being critical that folks seem to miss.

edit: get duffed is also good but not on the same level

I think I liked Chung more when he didn't do commentary so often. I don't mind him, but it used to be kind of a treat or surprise when he'd hop on for a bit once in a while.

Yes. Everyone should watch this. Even Third Strike haters. Hell, especially Third Strike haters.

In case it hasn't been posted or you don't feel like combing the entire thread for it, here's a YouTube playlist: http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL3DXHLetuqSSPnosJP2FYSrWq3ORrkVwM

And the playlist of the special exhibition tournament with all single-character teams: http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL3DXHLetuqSTb67BKh-ZCeWbxJrU8eM0w

Yes, an all-Chun team won, but it was a team of the three most godlike Chun players of all time, so yeah. For what it's worth, an all-Alex team got third, which is pretty crazy.

co-op cup was awesome. I just hate that I live in NY. It was like 5am and they weren't even that far into the bracket.

Flux is more likely mad at himself than anything, I know I'd be like that in his situation.

"HOW COULD I LOSE TO THAT SCRUB?" "I'm better than that." is my usual thought process.

shouldn't this be everyone's mindset? It's less "salty" and more "alright, time to get serious"

Sometimes (a lot of the time) it comes out as "FUCK I'M MAD THAT GUY SUCKS HOLY SHIT WHAT A SCRUB"

YaK my nigga

I can understand the thought process of flux but the way he went about it was completely wrong. Even if the guy is not on fluxs level, you don't holler that the dude sucks. You just say to yourself "damn, that dude is not as good as me but I got bopped, lemme step my shit up" But nah gotta nerd rage hardbody.

Twitch is sponsoring Apex. It's been a while since I seen a FGC event get some Twitch love.

Let's be real; Twitch is only doing this because of the larger focus on Smash.

I will gladly eat my words if they decide to begin sponsoring other majors and prove me wrong though.

I wonder how the FGC would react if Funkmaster Flex commentated every NLBC match. Especially the Flex that did the legendary Otis premiere.
