Heard too many bad things from local players that like to travel about NCR.

The location sucks, things run hella late, and favoritism is rampant between the bracket runners and norcal players. Shame, because I like how it is presented (announcement trailers, top 8 hype videos, stream) but it's not a tournament that seems to be worth the squeeze.

An almost literal squeeze last year, due to the size of the venue.

I have no clue if I can make it this year since all my spare money is being funneled into my EVO savings, but I can try. At the very least, I can show up for casuals.

It's really hard to book a good Bay Area location that's big enough to fit NCR on a modest budget these days, so I'm not surprised they're moving it up north. I'm just glad they're ditching the Domain, venue size aside that was one of the worst hotels I'd ever been to.

Sadly it had to land on the one weekend I might not be able to go.

IRT commentary:
i would love to try commentating VF someday because i think i can help non-VFers appreciate what's going on without feeling like they need to take notes.

I'm late to the conversation, but:

Perhaps you could do post-match analysis, highlighting particular moments of a match and explaining why this player did what he did and how you should incorporate it into your game.

Aris has done something recently for some old Soul Calibur 2 Nationals matches, and I am very fond of them. When it comes to commentary, I prefer this type more than live commentary. I need to watch more of it, how many folks do those types of videos with that type of commentary? Doesn't UltraChen do that? I don't watch UltraChen, which is why I ask(sorry, UltraDavid. I'll make it up to you by watching archives, I can rarely catch streams live).

its really sad

i feel like people hate him for the wrong reasons / cant see the beauty of what hes doing

mostly white people imo
don't feel like listening to shitty schtick when watching a stream. i'm not white either. don't want to bash the guy too much either because he's at least stepping up and commentating and there are many who enjoy his commentary. i just don't like it when people try too hard to be funny.

White people? What?

He's a commentator. People take him at face value, what more can you say? If he is just saying "get your sausage wet" a million times, what can you expect from people?

Forcing/Reaching for hype & humor is so repelling in pretty much anything (certainly in commentary).

Apparently some WWE wrestler was on the Games Underground stream yesterday (MA Stream) playing some games with Lucky D

It's Xavier Woods (Austin Watson), and yes, he plays Dudley:

Twitch is sponsoring Apex. It's been a while since I seen a FGC event get some Twitch love.

http://blog.twitch.tv/2014/01/apex-2014-powered-by-twitch/

It's even more surprising given the recent statements about the FGC by one of their community managers.

The FGC streams seem to be insignificant in terms of revenue generation, so I think if Twitch does sponsor FGC streams, it's going to be sporadic, and very selective on their part.

DC does have Marvel beat in the animated movies and the TV shows. Arrow is pretty damn good and is building its own universe.

Arrow is easily one of my favorite shows now (and I watch a lot of TV). Also, Stephen Amell's Facebook page is awesome, he updates regularly, does a lot of Q&A videos and really seeks to entertain with most of what he does. He fires on all cylinders there.

My first thought was "oh, a glitch to have Tina play in a stripper outfit".

Apex is kind of separated from more "traditional" FGC stuff so it's not all that surprising.

To be fair, even though it's a sketchy generalization; I see where Jazz is coming from. Chung is a play on hip hop's late-nineties/new millennium NYC mixtape golden era (DJ Clue, Funkmaster Flex et al.). That's largely what the catchphrases are inspired by, as well as the energy. If you weren't a hip hop fan during that time, or don't generally sympathize with some of the more "energetic" aspects of inner-city youth culture; you're just not going to "get" Lee and he might irritate you. Lee literally reminds me of some kids I went to school with from NY during that time which is part of why I love him.

And Lee doesn't have to try to be anything, least of all funny. Fuck out with that nonsense, dude is hilarious. Just not to some of you.

*edit*

And don't let the fact that he isn't funny to you fool you into thinking he doesn't know his stuff, or doesn't commentate the match at all, either. Being analytical is just not what he desires to bring to the table and many appreciate him for it.

i'm white and i love Lee Chung.

Lee Chung brings the party atmosphere where he wants the viewers to be having as much of a good time as he is having. Nothing wrong with that. Let the too cool for school set stand against the wall wondering why the rest of us are having so much fun.

I'd say that Chung's really entertaining on the mic but he's usually a pretty bad commentator (as a white man). I like him with Sp00ky because he can pull in the reigns a little whilst also being the straight-man to Lee's antics.

Rokunaya used to do this for melty and I believe Klaige still does this every now and then for guilty gear. Theres archives of their analysis videos on their YouTube channels.

And yeah it's the best form of commentary because you can pause and rewind and really go into detail about smart plays and what the players were thinking at specific moments.

Unfortunately because of the speed of the games we play it's really hard to do something like this live without holding up the match. Which is sad as it helps alot with not only expanding the audiences understanding of the match, but also communicating why the game is so deep and fun.

Fishstix on twitter says it's only the beginning. I could see them sponsoring SCR, NCR and CEO because those are the safest bet of not having something controversial to come out.

@FishStix: Money <--> Mouth

Expect continued community support across the board in 2014. This is just the beginning.

I didn't get that he was literally talking about sponsoring more tournaments, let alone FGC tournaments with this.

I'd wager that this means that they're simply putting more money into infrastructure, etc.

I don't see any tweets around it to provide enough context to make that jump either.

More Lee Chung hate on NeoGAF? huuu haaaa

Twitch sponsoring Apex is cool, but I don't know what that sponsorship entails for me to get all excited about. And only the beginning could mean alot of things. I don't see it as sponsoring more FGC events or sponsoring certain FGC events that are "safe bets". We'll see what happens.

I think people get tired of Lee Chung's shtick because he mostly/often says NOTHING about what's actually going on in the match. All of the "STOP IT!" and "OHHHHH!" aren't really adding any value, he's like a comedian. Some people are into that, some people hate it, some people don't really care (me), but I think in general a commentator should appeal to a large swathe of viewers.

I used to hate SkiSonic's commentary. I think he would frequently ramble, saying stuff that wasn't related to the match, talking about himself, etc. But he improved.

The commentator that I absolutely could NEVER stand was Keits (this was years ago). Nothing against him at all personally, but I distinctly remember him having an arrogant attitude that was incredibly offputting.

I'm kinda new to entire scene, so everything I know is more through word of mouth than anything else and I know my opinion doesn't hold much weight.

Bing a black kid who grew up in the 90's Bronx, sounds like I would know exactly what Lee would be like. I have family that are the same exact way; I'm strangely laid back (if it wasn't for my accent people wouldn't think I'm from NYC).

I probably wouldn't mind but when commentary appears to be more entertaining than informative, it's going to rub some people the wrong way because not everyone has the same taste in humor/entertainment. It's all preference so whatever.

I totally get what he's saying also being a black kid who grew up in Brooklyn. The thing is it's commentary for next level battle circuit locals. I don't really give a shit if the commentary isn't analytical (but it is anyway) because when I'm watching it's usually to hear sp00ky talk shit and others mess around and have fun.

The subjectivity is all but explicit in the post I made. I'm simply trying to provide perspective. Instead of complaining about how much you don't like Chung (or any commentator), I think there's more merit in considering why people identify with that style of commentary instead. If you can sympathize, then you can appreciate it (and of course, there's a spectrum in terms of commentary). This makes you more tolerable as a person (both on and off the internet) and could alter your streaming experience for the better (rather than merely getting upset/anooyed or muting the stream anytime someone doesn't conform to your ideals does commentary).

We're all in this shit together. It's a community. A grassroots one at that. Nothing positive comes from denouncing the efforts of people trying to contribute any way they know how.
